About the authors
Ingri d'Aulaire (December 27, 1904 – October 24, 1980) and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire (September 30, 1898 – May 1, 1986) were U.S. immigrant writers and illustrators of children's books who worked primarily as a team.
Bio from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Photo by Unknown (OTRS submission by Per Ola d'Aulaire) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons.
The work of Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire has needed no introduction - their beautiful picture books have delighted countless children ever since. Ingri Mortenson and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire met in Munich where both were studying art in the 1920's. Ingri had grown up in Norway; Edgar, the son of a noted portrait painter, was born in Switzerland and had lived in Paris and Florence. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to the United States and began to create the picture books that have established their reputation for unique craftsmanship. Their books were known for their vivid lasting color. a result of the pain-staking process of stone lithography used for all their American history biographies. This was an old world craft in which they were both expert, which involved actually tracing their images on large slabs of Bavarian limestone. Throughout their long careers, Ingri and Edgar worked as a team on both art and text. Their research took them to the actual places of their biographies, including the countries of Italy, Portugal and Spain when they were researching Columbus; to the hills of Virginia while they researched Washington; and to the wilds of Kentucky and Illinois for Abraham Lincoln, winner of the Caldecott Medal. The fact that they spoke 5 languages fluently served them well in their European travels and in their research of original documents. Since their deaths in the 1980's, Ingri and Edgar's books and works have been kept alive by their two sons Ola and Nils.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 4, 2023Verified PurchaseI bought the book to read with a 9-years old and it is not well suited for that. We need something with more details in each story.
The book is geared towards the adult readers and gives a lot of information on all the participants.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2013Verified PurchaseThis book has been a constant source of delight and conversation to my
10 year old grand daughter since it arrived. She is an avid and fluent reader
and likes to curl up with the book by herself, but younger children might need
to have it read to them. The stories are beautifully told and the illustrations
are clear and unambiguous as well as pleasing in their interpretation of the
verbal imagery. I am more than pleased and happy to recommend this book as a gift
to any family who cares that their children's education includes the basics
of classical mythology which underpins so much of the literature they will
encounter later on. Already, my grand daughter is making the connections
between the stories and references in modern English that are still in use, such
as "Pandora's Box" and being "as rich as Croesus" - to name just a couple.
I cannot recommend this book enough as an introduction to a world of terrific stories,
as well as enriching so many aspects of the child's understanding of her own culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on Greek Gods for easy reading and good information
Verified PurchaseMy husband, son and I are going to my son's college planetarium for various shows. At the end of these shows, the teacher talks about the constellations and how they are all related to the Greek Gods. I didn't know any of the stories about the Gods. Yes, I knew certain names of the Gods but did not know the stories behind them. I wanted to be more informed so that the lectures on the constellations made more sense. After researching multiple places for a book on Greek Gods, I saw this one on 鶹. It was highly rated. The stories and explanations are simple, interesting and easily understood. The pictures are cute and are drawn for younger children. It truly is a good book for a quick summary on the Gods. Also, the price is exceptional. I'm glad I purchased this book as it has helped all of us to better understand the constellation presentations .
