The most important thing I realized about this mortar gun is how different It appears in person. The pictures don't do it justice. It's heavy duty stainless steel. This is the type of tool that a professional could use. It looked plastic to me in the pics. But, this is not your basic caulking gun. This a large gun that can handle big jobs.
We got it because a long, thin crack started to form in one of our showers as we were replacing it and a lot of the repair we did was falling apart. There was a leak coming from the skylight.
It was suggested that we use mortar rather than using spackle to guard against moisture before doing anything else. I couldn't figure out how we would get mortar into such small, deep cracks and also large divots. There are a variety of repairs to tackle. Not only does this mortar gun come with multiple sized nozzles, but you can also use it for a variety of materials - caulking, cement, mortar (we're going to try liquid asphalt as well). There is also some brick pointing in the front that needs repairing, and this gun will be useful for that in the spring. The different nozzles and shapes should make it much easier to keep it neat and professional-looking so that we don't make a mess of the brick work (like last time). And, It will handle some large driveway patching, so we plan on giving this a workout.
I promise to be good to this gun. It completely disassembles so you can clean it properly. It's contractor-worthy. The viscosity of the material you're working with doesn't seem to matter and it comes with a funnel, so you can work with a variety of materials and fill the gun a couple of different ways. The directions do suggest that you cover the bottom of the gun with a towel so that it doesn't leak all over you but I wasn't planning on wearing a ball gown anyway and that goes for any more-liquidus material we use. It will be great outside for bigger jobs. We needed the small nozzle sizes for thin cracks, smooth repairs and outside we can control the shape and how thick or thin the materials come out. We just need to be careful how quickly the material is used so it doesn't dry inside the gun. It's got a large capacity.
Because this offers a multitude of sizes and shapes for caulking, pointing and grouting, with all the work we are doing, it was necessary to have a truly quality mortar gun. There is so much less mess and if we could find the old caulking gun, I'd show you the difference. The cocking gun was impossible to keep clean. Once you picked it up, it was stuck to you forever. I probably can't find it because it is stuck to the bottom of someone's shoe.
