- Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2010Verified PurchaseThis machine does all you would want an espresso machine to do. I do not claim to be a barista but I did own
a Saeco Via Venetia for many years ... and I see absolutely no difference in the results. The Cuisinart seems to
be well built ... all the buttons and switches have a very solid feel about them ... and the case appears to be
brushed metal not plastic but I really can't tell ... and to my eyes at least is very attractive ... all my friends
who saw it thought it cost a real lot more then I paid ... Its not very noisy and the frothing wand works well also
... and it does use pods for those so inclined ... at this price point (~150CDN)its a very nice buy!
A thoughtful touch from Cuisinart was including a metal frothing cup which saves the end user a fair bit of money. The enclosed
tamping tool works but some people might want to get a better one as made out of plastic and is a bit clumsy to hold...
but it was included and it does work ... The machine has a three year guarantee which is really very nice so if you
are in the market for a highly functional espresso machine I suggest that you take a look at the Cuisinart. Not a big
name in the espresso game but big time results ...
Recent Update:
Concerning the water temp for making espresso ... I made the mistake of making espresso with the steam/hot water button set on the hot water setting ... since there are only two icons I presumed that was the correct one .... the steam/hot water knob actually has THREE positions ... the middle UNMARKED setting is used for espresso ... but for some reason there is no marker to show that position. If u keep the knob at the hot water setting it will produce approximately 80ish degree Celsius water (not hot enough) while making espresso ... if u set the knob in the center (espresso) position while making espresso the water temp will be correct at approximately 90ish Celsius. (Experimental error prevents perfectly accurate water temp measurement because we cant measure it inside the filter basket.)
So do check to make sure u have set the steam/hot water button to the right place to make espresso ... believe me i read the instructions many times ... but i certainly missed that small detail. OMG
- Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2018Verified PurchaseMakes great Espresso but it is noisy. I usually put my hand on the water reservoir lid to dampen in. Other than that, it works well and is simple to use. This is the 2nd one I've owned. The steam wand on the 1st one broke inside after 4 years of regular use. Can't complain.
Update (22 August 2024): I've now owned the same machine for 6+ years and it's still going strong! Makes a great Cappuccino...lots of frothy foam! I'd buy another one without a second thought. (I use an Espressione grinder set to a Fine+1 grind.)
Update 30 Mar 2025: I'm still using the same machine that I purchased in March of 2018 (7 years)! Still making great espresso and the best steamed milk! Happy!🙂
- Reviewed in Canada on June 14, 2024Verified PurchaseWe purchased this machine for a second time - our first one lasted five years and suddenly stopped working - after some v basic troubleshooting- we determined we needed a new one - at this price point - this machine is extremely good value - we like it better than the fancier expensive machines
- Reviewed in Canada on May 10, 2021Verified PurchaseI've had 2 of these machines. They make delicious lattes, I'll give them that. But both machines had their steam wand fall off while making a coffee. The plastic part that attaches the wand was completely eroded from repetitive use with steam. The first was out of warranty and I had a prompt reply from the manufacturer (no replacement parts exist and it cannot be repaired). The second was within warranty but I can't get any response from the manufacturer about a replacement. If you want a machine that lasts try finding one that doesn't use plastic parts.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 31, 2022Verified PurchaseI've been using this espresso machine every day for 5 years now and nothing has broken or gone wrong with it. I love the coffee! I fine grind Lavazza beans usually and there's always a nice crema on the top. Lately I've been using the steamer to steam oat milk and it's great! It's had a lot of use, with 3 people using it. I'm really happy with it:)
- Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2023Verified PurchaseI’ve had 3 of these machines over the past 15 years. I can’t remember how the fist one died, the second one started leaking within the thermoblock (failed o-ring that I fixed but retired the machine to the cabin).
The latest replacement is very disappointing.
The portafilter is a dumbed down, cheap plastic version of the previous machines
The pump is twice as loud (though don’t expect any of these machines to be quiet).
The ecm program for the heating cycle has changed. It doesn’t heat as fast as the thermoblock now cycles often during initial start up and the micro switch clicks very loudly.
The above made me want to return the unit but I missed the window.
However, the machine does have advantages.
Large water reservoir that is easy to see the level and refill. Enough room to put an average size cup under it. Simple easy to use manual controls. But most importantly makes excellent espresso with ample crema.
I love good coffee but I’m not a zealot. I buy it ground (hate the sound of a grinder in the am)
When this machine underwhelmed me I thought I’d step it up and bought a breville bambi only to find the coffee extremely bitter. Yes I could have played with the roast, grind etc like the geeks do but why. I returned that unit despite my high hopes at about twice the cost of the Cuisinart.
As an aside I also have two Breville Cafe Roma machines (I drink coffee in many locations). Should the quality/noise of this Cuisinart get to me it will be replaced by the breville next time.
They are very similar machines. Simple, manual with excellent espresso and crema. Only down side of the breville is it only accepts smallish cups and is hard to see the water tank level.
Hope this helps.
