- Reviewed in Canada on May 7, 2024Verified PurchaseFor a lot of people, The Crow is an iconic film of the 90s, both for the movie itself and for its historical significance of being the movie Brandon Lee died making, another tragic loss of talent in the 90s, like Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, or River Phoenix. And it’s appeared on VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray, although a 4K home video release had been conspicuously absent until now.
But finally, to coincide with the release of a Crow remake that many are questioning the wisdom of, the original finally makes its debut on 4K, and fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief, run out, and purchase this disc because Paramount did not screw it up.
As far as image quality goes, this is one of those movies 4K was made for. 4K HDR can do two things very well. One is to create bright but controlled color intensity for very colorful films, and the other is to handle the contrasts of light and dark in ways that older media could not. The Crow is shot almost entirely at night, with subdued colors and lots of shadows, making earlier versions a tough watch sometimes because the blacks often crushed out details. That’s not the case here, as this 4K HDR remaster of the film doesn’t give us crazy, blooming colors (It’s The Crow, there are none), but instead, like the first Alien movie, lovingly preserves all the nuance and detail lost in shadows, while retaining deep, inky blacks the DVD version could never capture. Even the Blu-Ray release looks muted and washed out compared to how rich the blacks and shadows are here. Grain is intact, details are clearer and sharper than ever before, and when there are splashes of color, like in some action scenes, they are vivid. It’s safe to say the movie has never looked this good, dark, or broody before, although the heightened image quality does bring out the softness in some effects shots or make certain early CG and greenscreen shots more obvious.
The audio side of things is good, but it could have been amazing. It looks like Paramount went back and tweaked the original 5.1 lossless audio track from the previous 2011 release. That’s unfortunate for people with Dolby Atmos speaker setups as they won’t get to utilize the “full glory” of their home theater, unlike some other recent restorations like The Abyss, but at the same time, that 2011 audio track was pretty good. The dialog is clear, and perhaps just as importantly, the music sounds fantastic; even if we’re not going to get to hear the sound of a crow cawing directly over our heads, we will get to hear Robert Smith sound amazing as The Cure’s “Burn” plays in the background. What brings down this older track’s audio quality is that there was some uneven mixing in the sound effects, such as punches or even ejected shells sometimes sounding louder than actual gunfire, that carried over from the previous mix to this tweaked new one. Those occasional audio snafus aside, this is still a powerful, easy-to-listen-to audio mix. It just won’t take advantage of premium home theater setups.
For extras, it’s actually pretty decent. Legacy bonus features from past releases, including the Japanese version, have made it onto this disc, along with two new features made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the movie. So, while the jury is still out on whether or not it’s a good idea to remake this film for modern audiences, at the very least, we now have the best-looking and best-sounding version of the original ever released. Fans of the movie can rest assured that this is a safe buy, and if you have a decent home theater setup, you’ll enjoy the visual and audio upgrade with sharper visuals and lossless sound.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 2, 2025Verified PurchaseThe Crow remake is definitely an interesting take. It starts off as a bit of a slow burn, but once it picks up, the kill effects are absolutely worth the wait—some of them are downright jaw-dropping. It has a bit of a John Wick vibe, but with a twist: imagine Wick getting shot by literally everyone and somehow still coming out on top, taking down his enemies in brutal and creative ways.
That said, the mystical elements felt a bit overdone. While they’re a core part of the Crow’s story, dialing it back a notch could’ve made the film feel grittier and more grounded. Still, it delivers solid action, a dark atmosphere, and some memorable moments. If you’re into revenge tales with a supernatural twist, it’s worth a watch, even if it doesn’t quite match the raw magic of the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kultfilm in atemberaubender Qualität auf Bluray!
Verified PurchaseHallo,

5.0 out of 5 stars The Original and the Best
Verified PurchaseThis movie has always been one that I have loved after seeing it on VHS many years ago, then getting it on DVD to seeing it's anniversary release of the big screen. But the Blu-ray looks great and the sound mix is perfect. If you love this movie then it's worth having the Blu-ray in your collection.
