- Reviewed in Canada on October 21, 2022Verified PurchaseMy teen son read this book recently, and this is his review:
The Cross and the Switchblade is the powerful true story of a Pennsylvania preacher who travels to the slums of New York to teach the Word of God to the teenage gangs that run rampant there. There are many dangers and challenges to overcome, but by allowing God to do His work through him, he makes a positive difference to thousands of teens across the city. I liked this book because it shows how Christ has the power to make a change in even most violent of gang fighters, and the most hopeless of drug addicts. Anyone who enjoys tales of adventure, triumph, and Redemption will love this book.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2024Verified PurchaseA friend loaned me this book to read when I was in my teens. I have just reread it, many, many years later, and I am so glad I have.
I highly recommend it for learning about deep faith and/or growing your faith.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2022Verified PurchaseI love this book. I especially love that this is not fiction. It's a true story, and one that lives on today. Here in Canada, a couple from my church works at a Teen Challenge Center. This is inspirational and a reminder that all is possible with God. He is faithful and we need to have that faith. I am so happy of what God has done and is doing.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 7, 2014Verified PurchaseThis is an excellent book for young people to see that some of the issues they are experiencing are no different from teens before them. Even those whose lives became shallow and pointless as they struggled with the hardships of life found that the love of Jesus was greater than anything they could imagine and that it's powerful enough to deliver them out of the worse scenarios. This is a true story and is a tremendous witness to troubled teens for them to realize that although life can be horrific and tormenting, all things can change when they find the love of God. I highly recommend this book to teens and adults because it will open their eyes to what street kids really experience and that with Jesus there is hope for a better life.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 6, 2013This is the inspiring autobiographical story of an evangelical minister's crusade to open a home for street, gang and drug involved teenagers of the late fifties and early sixties. His ministry succeeded and became Teen Challenge which still exists today. Wilkerson's story is touching and interesting especially from an historical view as to how these societal problems were first dealt with during this time period. The language is dated with the overuse of the words "dope" and "addict" also "Negro", the n-word and women's place in society but of course this all reflects the time period. I also found Wilkerson's ability to pray to God at a moment's notice and receive immediate answers, within minutes, often in a room full of people to be quite, shall we say, over enthusiastic. However, upon looking the man up, he also claimed later in life to have received prophetic visions ... so who am I to judge. But I really did find laughable one chapter near the end where he spends the entire time explaining to a Jesuit priest what the Holy Spirit is. I'm Catholic, and know the Jesuits have had their naysayers in recent decades, but really! How anyone cannot know how important the Holy Spirit is to the Catholic faith, Confirmation anyone?, especially a priest is beyond ridiculous. While I did not agree with much of the theology in the book, I appreciated the heart felt spirit and love of Christ behind it and did very much enjoy hearing the success story of the organization and many youths who have been helped because of the unending commitment of the author. Interestingly my used copy contains a small slip of paper with a note hoping the recipient "enjoyed the Outreach Team that most recently visited your Church". Signed "The Teen Challenge Farm" which my research shows would have been located in London, Ontario. Also, as a side note, Wilkerson only died a couple of years ago tragically, in a car accident, at the age of 80.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 8, 2016Verified PurchaseBought copy about 20 years ago currently missing. But bought this one to refresh my memory as I am now working with Adult & Teen Challenge clients locally. I have their background, but with a lot more heavy duty trauma experiences along with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD. Whether one is associated with A&TC or not, this book will broaden understanding of those whose imprinted trauma is not always obvious. This book is "must-read" to comprehend our fellow humans.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 24, 2016Verified PurchaseI give this book a PG rating. It is almost impossible for me to read a book where I don't find practices or beliefs which I deem questionable however this story seems to show the Father's hand guiding. The story defies human reasoning and I dare you to read and say that the events in this story are coincidence. Watch as the depravity of the human heart meets the hand of a relentless God.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any Christian no matter what denomination
Verified PurchaseThe book mentions the word naive and I can't help thinking in parts of the book that's really foolish and naive. But what a story it's made and well balanced suitable for both Catholic and protestant . It's a powerful book to read and a very helpful one especially for those who are addicts or for those who are providing some sort of help to addicts and the many other problems with which we are all facing . I know this book mentions quite a number of miracles coincidences and so on which seem hard to believe but I know in my life there have been miracles like this too and I have managed to get by. I wouldn't be surprised if in your reading of this book that some miracles come your way too. And don't rationalise these miracles away . They can be cloudy and hard to put down on paper but there for real. This is a true story.
