    After having seen Neil deGrasse Tyson's 2014 Cosmos, I got intrigued by his inspiration and grabbed Carl Sagan's 1980 original as soon as it dropped below C$70. I was apprehensive to spend so much on a 40-year-old series, but the risk paid off: this was clearly state-of-the-art in 1980, and because most of the contents focuses on history, very little is actually outdated as of today. Most episodes have an added-on 5-10 minute update epilogue from Sagan himself recorded around 1990.

    Last but not least, the series covers different enough subjects and scientists' lives vs the 2014 Cosmos that I see both as complementing each other rather well, with only maybe a 20-25% overlap.

    The original Cosmos has proven to be indeed timeless. The observations, concepts and sentiments presented there in rang true when they were first put forth and many have become prophetic. The series, so well written by the late Dr Sagan his wife Ann Druyan and Steven Soter, stands as the standard to which similar documentaries must aspire. Carl Sagan¡¯s Cosmos, in the DVD format, is a must addition to any video library.

Sagan touches on everything from Death from Cold War becoming ¡°hot¡±, science through the ages, science history which could have gone the other way, the Big Bang, importance of libraries, books, reading, how we are called to Space¡­I¡¯m calling it a Must See! He puts his soul into this Magnum Opus. I wish we had a 2025 ¡°Carl Sagan¡±¡­
