- Reviewed in Canada on January 12, 2025Verified PurchaseConclave the film follows the novel pretty close, with minor variations (Ralph Fiennes is an English cardinal rather than an Italian from Genoa; his Italian isn’t bad BTW). It’s one of his best performances. John Lithgow was the Quebec cardinal with alleged dubious dealings. It was fun to see how the director and producers presented things because a reader lets his/her imagination flow. My version was more melodramatic and, having been to the Vatican, a bit more creative about settings.
The ending is more ambiguous than the book. You see a door close (church has its secrets) but Lawrence safely gets one of the former pope’s turtles to a pond and the final has three young nuns laughing (a future?). The twist at the end is the same as in the novel. Improbable, will offend some. I like the simple reality that there’s a secret that is going to come out eventually with all sorts of implications.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 31, 2025Verified PurchaseOne of those films, Like Remains of the Day, that makes the book better. Superb cinematography and performances all 'round, but it's the conclusion that will be especially meaningful to progressive Catholics.
