- Reviewed in Canada on October 20, 2012Verified PurchaseMetropolis is a silent film classic with an interesting history. It was edited down from its original full length version and, somehow, all known prints of the original full length version were lost or destroyed.
In the 1990s a copy of the original full length version was found in South America. This copy was on 16mm film and was not in pristine condition. But it was the only known copy of the full length original so a project was undertaken to restore a complete version of the full length original version using material from the 16mm South American copy.
This is the restored version of the full length original film.
The restoration is very well done. It's obvious where material from the 16mm South American copy has been edited in but the restoration looks very good.
This movie is an essential film for movie history fans. This restored full length version is the one to buy.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 16, 2021Verified PurchaseThis movie has just elevated to a classic movie. With the added 25 min it makes it a cohesive story, that’s easier to follow and understand.
And for a movie from 1927, it has quite the special feature, documentary on the journey of this film, with behind the scenes pictures and some video. Definitely recommend!!!

- Reviewed in Canada on December 18, 2019Verified PurchaseDespite what can be accomplished in modern cinema, Metropolis, in this restored version with missing footage largely replaced, is a masterpiece. Sure it's morality and social remedies are oversimplified, but this film is operatic in its scale and ambition. The animation of the robotrix, with its elaborate optical effects and moody score, is the clear forerunner of every CG movie currently in distribution. And what movie mad scientist doesn't owe a debt to Rotwang?

- Reviewed in Canada on October 16, 2012Verified PurchaseThe Complete Metropolis is astounding on blu-ray. The film's well-remembered portions are visually gorgeous, and while the more recently added 'found' scenes are noticeably lower in quality (due to long-term deterioration), it's all still very watchable. Also, the original score has been re-recorded in its entirety, completing this masterpiece to the best possible authentic restoration. Bonus features on the blu-ray include a documentary on the history of finding the lost footage, as well as an interview on the process, and trailer. Highly recommended for film historians and enthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A release many never expected to see.
Verified PurchaseGiven the legal entanglements and conflicts it seemed unlikely that there would ever again be an official release of Moroder's restoration/scoring of Lang's Metropolis. I'm very glad they worked things out.
Having said that, I was disappointed that little or no restoration work per-se was done to this release. It is a good HD transfer from a good quality print, nothing more or less, other than very good remastering of the score and a new 5.1 mix. I understand that, at the time he made it, Moroder was forced to print flaws in the then-available footage into his negative, but even the opening titles added by Moroder have a lot of visible scratches and jitter (the image shaking, primarily in the vertical direction, usually due to worn sprocket holes in the film). While I understand and respect that there was a conscious decision to present Moroder's restoration in it's original form, and it would extremely difficult to do much about earlier-generation damage printed onto the available copy, flaws due to wear in the Moroder print itself should have been corrected, and Kino has previously demonstrated masterful skill at doing so.
So far I have only addressed this release from a technical standpoint, ignoring the fact that there is an entire generation of people who have never seen and heard this version of Metropolis. I can't give you any objective guidance, as I am a fan of both versions of this film. I will at least point out that, while he did take some artistic liberties with tinting, titling, and scoring, Moroder's was an earnest and impressive effort to restore the film and it's story as much as possible with the resources available to him at the time. In fact, it was the most complete and coherent presentation of Lang's film available until a beautiful restoration made and screened in 2002, and released on DVD in 2003. For the 1980's audience, Moroder's version was more a entertaining and comprehensible presentation, and for many people, may remain so today.
If you are watching Metropolis for the first time, which restoration to choose primarily depends upon your sensibilities regarding the score. Choose the Moroder for an excellent 1980's pop and rock score, and a shorter run-time. Choose the first Kino restoration (2003) for the original orchestral score, consistently high visual quality, and a very helpful and interesting commentary track. Sadly, the more complete, if inconsistent, 2010 Kino restoration omits a commentary track. Ultimately, I recommend seeing all three, but I am far from objective about this film.
There is an arguably better fan restoration of the Moroder version for those who seek it out, but you will want to buy this one as well anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maravillosa!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edición definitiva?

5.0 out of 5 stars A well restored version of Fritz Lang's masterpiece.
Verified PurchaseI had previously only ever seen short extracts of the film on television over the years (from the severely cut Paramount version made for the US) and accordingly had a completely distorted view of its content, assuming it to be an uncritical semi-documentary homage to modernism whereas it provides rather a warning of the dangers of a society in which the head (capitalism) and the hand (labour) lack a mediator (the human heart). This mediation is, at the end of the film, rather naively provided by Freder, the formerly idle son of the arch capitalist Joh Frederson, who has encountered the workers in their subterranean city and falls for their spokeswoman, Maria. Nor is there any shade of irony when the true representative of labour in this denouement is seen to be one Grot, Joh Frederson's erstwhile informer in the workers' city. However, the set designs for the city of the future are wonderfully imaginative and the special effects seem quite marvellous for the time, most of all in the scene where the feminine robot created by the evil inventor, Rotwang, is animated with the spirit of the captured Maria. Best of all is the expressionistic acting, which conveys the drama of the silent film extremely well, with only a minimum use of intertitles. although it can look rather comical at times to a present day viewer. The film itself is often of remarkably good restored quality with only a relatively few grainy, damaged parts derived from the full print discovered in Buenos Aires which was itself a print of the original and thus bore the indelible, unrestorable, scars of the damaged original but which enabled the restorers to reintroduce the Paramount cuts. (This is explained fully in the very good documentary footage that also comes with this package.) I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys watching 1920s cinema and especially to anyone who has my originally mistaken view of what Metropolis was all about.

Beide sehr gut.
