    Bought these because a bear has been coming into our yard the last couple of weeks.. Last one was standing on the deck when we took the dog out at night.. He was checking out the BBQ.. So.. Bells on US, and Bells on the Poodle.. and the BBQ us moved from the house.. and so far. we have not seen the bear anywhere! Nice and loud.. the dog doesn't like the sound but he is getting used to it..

    This bear bell was nice while new, but over time or with a lot of movement, I find the velcro just comes undone and I lose the bell. I tried having it attached to my dog's harness and to my dog's collar. It fell off in both spots repeatedly.

    I now have it on the harness but with a piece of duct tape securing the straps of the bell together. I don't rely on the velcro anymore.

    It comes with a magnetic silencer, but don't count on that working. I find you need the bell in a specific position to get it to work. If the dog is running a lot, it'll just come off and start ringing when you might not want it to.

    In Vermont, black bears don't want to interact with humans and vice-versa. A bear bell provides some additional warning that humans are near and bears will move away from the area. This bell works and does the job.

    The sound is pleasant and doesn't become annoying after a long time. The little magnetized strap is supposed to silence the bell when not needed, but doesn't always do a good job but you can detach the bell and stick it in your pocket or backpack. Coghlan makes good bear bells and I also have the other model that uses a magnetized mesh bag silencer: Coghlan's Magnetic Bear Bell.

    The Velcro strap is long enough to attach around the top of a hiking stick, a backpack, or button hole, or even a dog's collar (but I don't recommend attaching is to clothing because it doesn't hang free and isn't very effective).

    In bear country sometimes more than a little noise is needed, so when we are hiking or walking the woods with more than one person, we all have a bear bell. One of us will also carry something like a Falcon Safety Super Sound Horn which is a pretty good deterrent if a bear gets too curious.
