Code Name: Pale Horse: How I Went Undercover to Expose America's Nazis Paperback – March 3 2026
鶹
When Scott Payne was growing up, an ‘80s kid with a big attitude and a taste for sleeveless shirts, he could never have envisioned where he’d find himself on Halloween night 2019. Having transformed into “Pale Horse” and infiltrated the nation’s most dangerous, fastest-growing white supremacy group, The Base, he was huddled with a cell of neo-Nazis in the backwoods of Georgia as they slaughtered a goat and drank its blood in a ritual sacrifice.
A decorated agent dubbed the “Hillbilly Donnie Brasco,” Payne takes readers along with him on some of the most terrifying and riskiest assignments in FBI history. He went deep undercover with the lethal Outlaw Motorcycle Club in Massachusetts; to the front lines of the opioid epidemic in Tennessee; and infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. Through it all, he stayed married to the love of his life, raised two girls, and spent his Sundays at church, sustained by family and faith.
Timely and unputdownable, Code Name: Pale Horse is a hard look at some of the most pressing threats facing America today. Honest and inspiring, it’s the story of a hero determined to take down a hateful army—before the unthinkable could come to pass.

It's not super often that law enforcement will bring us through how they were able to build and make an arrest in some of these big crime groups. Obviously, they can't give away any trade secrets but I loved the way he took us through how he thought, how he was feeling, when he landed a good resukt by pure luck, and also by pure planning & instinct!
White supremacy scares em guys, this was a very interesting read/listen! 100% recommend!

- Reviewed in Canada on June 29, 2025Format: HardcoverThe facts in this book are so distorted, one who thinks critically, can clearly see the numerous contradictions to what we witness daily. Extremism of any kind is not healthy for society, but over the past 15+ years, the vast majority of it is in fact coming from the extreme left. There's lots of racism in America... wow, what a revelation. This guy is a pure genius (sarcasm). But it wasn't the far right that took over nearly every major TV network, and it wasn't the far right that took over major American cities and caused 2 billion in damages during fake outrage riots. Its not the far right manipulating your kids in the school system, and manipulating the justice system. White supremacists have always existed and nowadays they are the least of your worries. The FBI has become a joke and most everyone but the blind observes this corruption regularly.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 7, 2025Format: HardcoverWaste of money. Mentioning Joe Pistone, to sell books. This book is 220 pages, but the first 150 pages are NOTHING to do with the premise of infiltrating Neo Nazis. 150 pages of bike gangs selling cars and drugs. The last 70 pages about a few racists shooting guns in the woods, talking fantasy of anarchy, then planning a murder of a couple of unimportant Antifa types. Then arrests. Nothing actually happens. Brasco/Pistone lived undercover for years and was surrounded by the crimes. For Nao Nazi expose and reality read The Silent Brotherhood/The Order to read about Neo Nazis that actually did things. This book has no substance...previews are very misleading...NOTHING happens. Would demand money back if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, gripping, and a little overwhelming
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI read this book in one sitting (when I say I couldn’t put a book down, I mean it literally), and it was so well written and well paced, it was easy to finish it. I was drawn in immediately, kept engaged throughout, and felt invested in the outcome.
Payne’s courage in the face of what was clearly and often very dangerous circumstances is inspiring and impressive.
It’s pretty overwhelming to realize how much hate and rage there is in America and, although it’s obvious that at the time Payne was in the FBI, there was a huge network of federal agencies staying on top of these hate groups, I fear that’s no longer the case.
Great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and a pleasure to read
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis book is well written and leaves you feeling as if you had an actual sit down conversation with the author. It really gives perspective and insight into what it takes to the very ballsy work of undercover operations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhy someone would choose to do this type of work would make me question their sanity. But I truly admire and thank them for what they do. Scott's faith and family keeps him grounded. What an incredible journey.
