From the New York Times bestselling author of The Frozen River, this thrilling novel about a daring socialite spy chronicles the true wartime exploits of a woman who deserves to be a household name.

"Will fascinate readers of World War II history and thrill fans of fierce, brash, independent women." —Lisa Wingate, #1
New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

It is 1936 and Nancy Wake is an intrepid Australian expat living in Paris who has bluffed her way into a reporting job for a Hearst newspaper when she meets the wealthy French industrialist Henri Fiocca. No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name—a code name.

Told in interweaving timelines organized around the four code names Nancy used during the war,
Code Name éèԱ follows Nancy’s transformation from journalist to one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, known for her ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and her ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied forces. But with power comes notoriety, and no matter how careful Nancy is to protect her identity, the risk of exposure is great—for herself and for those she loves.

Review

"Ariel Lawhon delivers in Code Name éèԱ. This fully animated portrait of Nancy Wake— underground operative, charmer in red lipstick, loving wife, and hard-hitting woman of her times, will fascinate readers of World War II history and thrill fans of fierce, brash, independent women, alike. A stark exploration of the remarkable difference one person, willing to rise in the face of fear, can make." –LISA WINGATE, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

NEW YORK POST "REQUIRED READING"

“A spellbinding work of historical fiction. . . [and] one of the most sensual romance novels you’ve ever read. . .
She is real, this really did happen is the mantra you may find yourself repeating, in awe of every page.”BOOKPAGE, *STARRED*

"A compulsively readable account of a little-known yet extraordinary historical figure—Lawhon's best book to date."
KIRKUS REVIEWS, *STARRED*

“Magnificent. . . Lawhon carries us into the heart of the French resistance [and] into the mind of a badass heroine with uncanny instincts who takes on the Nazis and men’s arrogant sexism with uncommon bravado. . . Even long after the last page is turned, this astonishing story of Wake’s accomplishments will hold readers in its grip.”
BOOKLIST, *STARRED*

"Readers will be transfixed by the story of a woman who should be a household name."LIBRARY JOURNAL *STARRED*

“Riveting. . . [A] stunning, moving story.”—B鷡ʰշ.䰿

“Masterful. . . Exhaustively researched and vividly woven. . . As much an epic love story as an engrossing narrative of an unlikely anti-Nazi combatant. . . Lawhon has proven herself a master at her craft, and she does readers a great service with Code Name éèԱ.”CHAPTER16

“Captivating. . . [Lawhon] sweeps readers into Nancy’s wry, fast-talking, first-person account of her adventures. . . While Nancy cuts a vivid, stylish figure through the novel’s pages, her supporting case is also well drawn [and] Lawhon’s elegant plotting makes them shine. . .Lawhon’s gripping narrative gives ‘éèԱ’ her due.”
SHELF AWARENESS

"Gripping…Lawhon throws readers into the middle of the action… Lawhon’s vivid, fast-paced narrative will keep readers turning the pages, and a detailed afterword makes plain how much of the account is factual. This entertaining tale does justice to Lawhon’s larger-than-life subject.”

Non stop action…really had a hard time putting it down but didn’t want to finish too fast. The bravery of the resistance fighters is astounding. When I wasn’t reading I was thinking about the book, questioning if I could be that brave if in the similar situation. Spoiler alert…when I read the author’s note I was blown away to learn it was a true story. If you only read one book this year chose this one!

Probably one of the best books I’ve ever read. I have a terrible memory but I constantly bring this book up to others and couldn’t recommend it more if you wanted to read about a bada** woman!

Neither of the time periods caught my attention, and I decided to DNF it at 30% when there was prolonged scene where our protagonist was being courted by a "man so handsome he could have any woman in France" and he decided he need to teach her how to drink. How old are we? This had the feeling of a bad high school scenerio. Normally I love books set in this time period, but this was a waste of money.

What a woman! I hadn't heard of Nancy Wake although I see from the Author's notes that she was the inspiration for Charlotte Gray. Fantastic story and so well done. I'm now reading Nancy Wake's biography as recommended and the novel is very very close to the facts. I absolutely loved it. Would make a wonderful film or mini-series. Can just see Kate Winslet as Nancy.

I read a lot of historical fictions in the time of world war 2. There are tons but this is one of the good ones. Memorable characters. I really liked Nancy. She is really something.

Phenomenal. That’s the word I keep circling back to.

This book took me on a ride through Nazi-occupied France alongside one of the fiercest women to ever wear lipstick, carry explosives in her suitcase, and fight the war on her terms. Nancy Wake’s life was extraordinary—and Ariel Lawhon did it justice in every way that matters. Her story is told with such detail and care that you feel like you’re breathing alongside her, waiting for coded messages, racing through forests on bicycles, or matching wits with the patriarchy over wine.

What impressed me most was how the writing never dragged. It was vivid without being repetitive, informative without feeling like a textbook. It moved. And Nancy? She moved me.

She was strategic. Unapologetic. Sharp as a tack and twice as dangerous. She used the tools she had—including her femininity—and made it very clear that a bulletproof vest could come in the shape of red lipstick.

    “You put on lipstick.”
“Would you go into battle without a bulletproof vest?”
There are so many moments I flagged that I won’t spoil here, but a few deserve a quiet nod:

The quiet tension between Nancy and Henri’s father… and the devastating way Marceline’s presence undercut that dinner.
Nancy’s relentless ride across the countryside, worn down to the bone, but determined not to fail her mission.
Her refusal to let male egos dictate the terms of her worth:
“He doesn't like me, therefore I am unreasonable. A femme stupide.”
There’s a storyline involving dogs, and another involving a woman named Geredine, that I’m still thinking about. Lawhon layered these details in ways that whisper rather than shout. Foreshadowing that doesn’t need to announce itself.

And the ending? It made me ache—in that “I knew this was coming but I still wasn’t ready” kind of way. Bittersweet and brutal. Heroic and human.

I'm so grateful for writers like Ariel Lawhon who ensure women like Nancy Wake don’t disappear into forgotten newspaper archives. This story will stay with me for a long time, I've already started researching more about Nancy Wake.
