War is hell 👹 but what is it, when it’s in your own backyard ,between fellow Americans. Following a group of journalists trying to capture the moment in time through their camera 📷 lens. They are right there, next to the weapons fighting, blood 🩸 and the dead bodies 💀 Their objective is Washington DC, while photographing the chaos as they make their journey. In some small towns, the war is not present and simple life just goes on. Soon they encounter a horrific situation, which will last them for a lifetime. A bit of fantastic calm scenery and some good music 🎶 is thrown into the mix. Breaching the White House scenes were unbelievable. Awesome movie 🎥

This movie left me emotionally drained like a few other motion pictures ever have. It has a wonderful pace and really brings you into the story of these four journalists trying to cover a Civil War within the United States. The problem is you are thrown right into the story without any context as to why it’s happening, or know who the protagonists and antagonists are, and why the secession took place. All we know is that the central US government is under attack by rebel forces and are now on the verge of capturing Washington and killing the president.
This is the great weakness of this movie. Unlike the real United States Civil War fought between 1861 and 1865, you knew why it was happening. Because of that, you can emotionally pick your side, even as you read about it.
That’s not the case here. And I think it’s done deliberately because in someways, it may be set up as a reflection of how things are potentially in the current United States. Whether you agree with that or not, is immaterial to the story. That is because the real enemy here is war itself, and your only segue into that conflict is through the four main characters who are both trying to report on it and somehow survive it.
Those main characters are played incredibly well and with a genuine authenticity that makes you truly believe you’re watching something that took place, or is taking place, in any number of real combats situations going on right now. Kirsten Dunst is particularly effective in this and so is her sidekick who is ably played by Cailee Spaeny. They are the heart of this story, and it is their relationship that, like a thread going through the eye of a needle, helps stitch together a plot through the chaos of this movie.
Another great performance is by Jesse Plemons, who is genuinely terrifying and so realistic that you are left shaken by it. The only other performance that comes close to his (in terms of evil and menace) is that of Ralph Fiennes’ Amon Goth in Schindler’s List.
The ending, however, is somewhat anti-climatic. There are no real answers as to why this Civil War took place. You are just left emotionally drained and terrified by what you saw. And if that’s not something you’re prepared for definitely steer clear of this movie.
It is certainly not a date-night movie, nor one that you can watch again, at least for a while, if at all. But you can’t appreciate it for what it is.
Again, it would’ve helped if we had context, because then the motion picture would give a broader meaning to what the viewer just saw. But I don’t think that was the movie makers goal.
Clearly, this movie is not for everyone. In fact, I doubt it’s for very many people. So if you do have the courage to buy this and watch it, be prepared for how it will affect you because it does strike a deep cord.

Another fine addition to my DVD collection of Alex Garland films. Now, for the time being, he has moved away from directing and back to working mainly as a screenplay writer. I hope he returns to directing sooner than later. His films are very watchable over and over again, at least for me. If you liked Ex Machina, Annihilation and Men, Civil War will not disappoint. dcb

Civil War (2024) sets itself up as a razor-sharp social thriller, weaving intense rural political tensions with biting commentary on a fractured society. The first two acts are undeniably gripping, with palpable dread and characters that feel unnervingly real. But then, just as it builds to what should be a shattering climax, the film veers off a cliff with an ending so lazy and insulting it feels like a betrayal of everything it promised. It’s as if the writers abandoned their vision for a cheap melodramatic cop-out. While the setup is brilliant, the payoff is a letdown so severe it’s hard to recommend.

I managed to get through an hour of this before I gave up. The movie follows a group of journalists as they try to travel from NYC to Washington DC during the American 2nd Civil War. There's so much bad with this movie, I don't know where to start. After an hour, I still had no idea why the war started. I had no idea where they where and no idea who they were encountering.

Great movie. If you have a sound system at home, buying this 4K disc is a no brainer, and it's one of the best sounding Atmos discs I've ever heard. It's not a very noisy movie, but when there is noise, especially gunfire, it's LOUD. You FEEL it, almost like you're right there. Worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping vision of a "what-if" near future that mostly works

Compelling "what if" war drama set in a fictional near-future America tearing itself apart. Some poignant moments regarding apathy, the clash of patriotism and nationalism...but the messages are often muddied and the impact is dulled by a commitment to avoid naming real-world political movements. On one hand, this is admirable and allows for many points of view, on the other, it makes the movie a bit too esoteric for me.
