鶹
Instant New York Times Bestseller!
“The final shattering installment in a gangland trilogy to equal The Godfather. If you like Scarface and Goodfellas, this is where it’s at.” — Stephen King
“City in Ruins is Don Winslow showing the rest of us how it’s done. Winslow has saved the best for last.” — James Patterson
“The Godfather for our generation.” — Adrian McKinty
From New York Times bestselling author Don Winslow comes City in Ruins – his epic, genre-defining crime masterpiece . . . and the final novel of Winslow’s extraordinary career.
Sometimes you have to become what you hate to protect what you love.
Danny Ryan is rich.
Beyond his wildest dreams rich.
The former dock worker, Irish mob soldier and fugitive from the law is now a respected businessman – a Las Vegas casino mogul and billionaire silent partner in a group that owns two lavish hotels. Finally, Danny has it all: a beautiful house, a child he adores, a woman he might even fall in love with.
Life is good.
But then Danny reaches too far.
When he tries to buy an old hotel on a prime piece of real estate with plans to build his dream resort, he triggers a war against Las Vegas power brokers, a powerful FBI agent bent on revenge and a rival casino owner with dark connections of his own.
Danny thought he had buried his past, but now it reaches up to him from the grave to pull him down. Old enemies surface, and when they come for Danny they vow to take everything – not only his empire, not just his life, but all that he holds dear, including his son.
To save his life and everything he loves, Danny must become the ruthless fighter he once was – and never wanted to be again.
Ranging from the gritty back rooms of Providence, RI to the power corridors of Washington, DC and Wall Street to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, City in Ruins is an epic crime novel of love and hate, ambition and desperation, vengeance and compassion.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 28, 2024Verified PurchaseI devoured Don Winslow's cartel trilogy. My expectations were very high for this new trilogy. Overall, I had a great time, but it was not as interesting as the cartel, where I actually learned many things. This trilogy is more like The Sopranos meet Goodfellas. It's still worth reading. Basically, this trilogy is a rewriting of The Illiad, The Odyssey and The Aeneid, set in the 80's and 90's. The books are overflowing with references to these mythological tales. Sometimes, they are pretty obvious (such as the characters of Pam who is Helen and Cassie who is Cassandra), other times, they are a bit more subtle but eventually, I was able to see them and it changed my whole understanding of the plot. Don Winslow wanted to show that all tales pretty much come from Homer and Virgil and maybe he's right.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2024Verified PurchaseThis is probably the 6th Winslow book I’ve read. He never disappoints. Sad to hear he’s no longer writing so I’ll have to read some of his earlier works.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 1, 2024Verified PurchaseMy husband loved City in Ruins. He's a huge fan of Don Winslow novels.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2024Verified PurchaseThe end of Dan Ryan’s story. He makes a good start at an existence outside the Irish mafia, but, if you know the author, you know it’s going to be a rocky road and not one that’s necessarily going to be a happily ever after. Very entertaining.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 4, 2024Verified PurchaseWhile it was a good fun read, and had a fitting end, I was pleasantly surprised by how different the ending was than how I had imagined it going.

3.0 out of 5 stars La chiusura della saga
Verified PurchaseL’ultima saga della trilogia. Più debole delle altre e per certi versi un po’ scontata. Ma va letto se vi sono piaciuti gli altri libri.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Writer at the Top of his Game
Verified Purchase“City in Ruins” will be Don Winslow’s final novel. This is a great shame. Having said that, the man is certainly going out on top and on his own terms. This book is an absolute tour de force.
“City in Ruins” is the third instalment of the Danny Ryan trilogy. The overall story begins in Providence, Rhode Island where Danny is a small time gangster. He is ultimately forced to flee the state and ends up in Las Vegas where he re-invents himself as an increasingly successful casino operator. But he can never really escape his past. It’s in “City in Ruins” where everything comes to a head.
Don Winslow is one of the great modern American crime writers. “City in Ruins” makes this so evident. I read the book in a handful of sittings. I was totally entranced. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It’s a modern masterpiece.
Do yourself a favour. Buy this book. Do yourself and even bigger favour and buy the three books of the trilogy and read them in order. You can thank me later.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting finale
Verified PurchaseI've read every DW book I could get hold of and every one was worth the effort. This was no exception. A great end to the Danny Ryan trilogy. Anyone new to the books should start with the first one and read all three. Ryan is likeable rogue, a great character, the main man in the war between the Irish and the Italian mafia, starting in New England and in this book finishing up in Vegas. This is Winslow's last book and one of the best. I couldn't put it down.
Have a great retirement Don. You deserve it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don Winslow's final book is a terrific thriller
Verified PurchaseGiven that "City in Ruins" marks both the final book in Don Winslow's Danny Ryan trilogy and also serves as Winslow's announced last book ever, it's fair to assume that nostalgia is tinging this review more than a bit.
If Winslow has to stop writing - and he's more than earned the right to put his pen down - "City in Ruins" marks a fine work to end on.
Danny Ryan, former Rhode Island fisherman and minor muscle man for the local Irish mob, is now a Las Vegas mogul. "City in Ruins" reads like a rocket, with the action, schemes, and plots flying by at a rapid but never out-of-control pace. This is a terrific page-turner, particularly with a few of the action scenes that will stay with the reader long after you've put the book down.
My only criticism of the book is that Danny Ryan is a bit of a Mary Sue, too good across the board. How does this guy with an education from the school of hard knocks manage to grok Las Vegas better than anyone in addition to winning the hearts of no less than three angelic beauties? Winslow attempts to show this by having Danny focus on the essentials - truth, respect, and unalloyed love on the personal side, while on the professional side Ryan is committed to the bottom line as well as providing the ultimate in customer service. But Danny often seems a little too good to be true, even as he suffers more than his fair share of setbacks.
That is a minor quibble and it is enough to keep "City in Ruins" from toppling "Power of the Dog" off the #1 spot of my favorite Winslow books. But Winslow is an amazing writer and "City in Ruins" is an amazing book. Highly recommended, and a must-read for all Winslow fans.
