- Reviewed in Canada on December 11, 2014Verified PurchasePretty good movie. Lots of action and a good amount of comedy. Chow Yun Fat was good as always. My only major problem with this dvd was that it was only dubbed. No option for original language or subtitles. This was not specified in the details. Otherwise I would have given it another star.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 24, 2021Verified PurchaseNo original voice track, just a godawful English dub. Do not buy.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 2, 2001"City on Fire" far and away is much better than Tarantino's movie "Reservoir Dogs". City on Fire is not like any of Chow Yun-Fat's other movies in that it contains less gun play and less violence. But one thing that is intact is the great story. This is one of the best undercover cop stories there are and no American film company could do it better, they could only copy it like Tarantino. As said before, Yun-Fat is an undercover cop who must bust thieves who are going to pull a big job. One of the thieves is Danny Lee from the Chow Yun-Fat movie "The Killer." If you want to see a smart action film then you must get this one because it actually makes sense.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 4, 2003While this movie may not be in the same league as some of the classic Chow Yun Fat thrillers (The Killer, Hard-Boiled, Full Contact, for example), this is still a decent action film. The interplay between the characters is, unfortunately, cliched and sometimes ludicrous (the scene in the cemetery, for example), but the assured direction, complex storyline, and gritty realism more than make up for it; the jewelry heist and the nihilistic, bullet-riddled ending are particularly well-staged. The DVD I have is the (badly) dubbed version, which sounds like it was done by a third-rate comedian locked in a closet. The print of the film, however, is clear and sharp (I had seen this on videotape several years ago, and remember it as being somewhat grainy), though it did seem sometimes as if there was a little jumpiness from shot to shot in some scenes.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2002If you order the Dimension/Disney version (which has a big blue Chow Yun-Fat face on the cover and a picture of a city on fire. Get it? city - on - fire. Yes, Disney does think you are that simpleminded) you get the version with English dubbing only. If you get the Tai Seng version (with the faces of three actors and Chinese writing on the cover) you get the vastly superior original version with subtitles. They cost the same but the Tai Seng version is so much better. Do yourself a favor and get that one.
I give the Disney/Dimension version 1 star and the Tai Seng version 5 stars.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 1, 2001city on fire........this movie inspired Tarantino's Resvoir Dogs...but honestly i don't see how that happened. this movie was not as good as the killer or hard-boiled.
Movie starts at a stree market of Honh Kong, an undercover cop is killed by some Triad when they discovred that he's a cop.
Inspector Lau,(plays Chow YunFat's Uncle) wants Ko Chow(Chow Yun Fat) to finish the job.
Chow Yun Fat was not as slick or genius in this movie copare to his other movies. there a scene where he;s buck naked.
Action was horrible, there are only 2 actual shoot outs,
one scene i say is genius is the scene where gangs point guns at each other not knowin who to trust....that scene was awesome....but the movie...ehhh... not so great.
i recommend watchin better tomorrow, god of gamblers, the killer.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 26, 2001Technically, great. I love this film. But, I HATE the English dubbing. I still find myself watching the VHS version. No one has so far managed to translate the inflections, and emotions, of a language, once they dub it...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent and by far the best version you will ever ...
Verified PurchaseBlu-Ray Review: Kam And Ronson version. This is an excellent and by far the best version you will ever find with this movie. The picture quality is great. Some may say it isn't and unless they have like 80/20 vision, they are stupid as hell. The audio is okay but still need improvement. Also this Blu-Ray comes with an interview that is not subtitled and trailers. The subs are coherent with very little grammar errors if not at all.
Movie Review: City On Fire is an excellent cops and robbers movie filled with bloody violence with a really well told story of friendship and betrayal. Gee! Where have I heard that before? SHEEESH! Though this kind of storytelling is very common in China (if not the world), this one executes very well with complexity, dramatization, great direction from Ringo Starr.... uh I mean LAM, and the bloody action was happy fun. It has it's moments of comedy but it's not irritating like most Chinese movies. Uh, stop it. You fs are not funny.
Conclusion: 4 1/2 stars for the Blu Ray and 5 stars for City On Fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Blu-ray release of this Classic film
Verified Purchase**Warning Plot Spoilers** This fully uncut Blu-ray release of "City on Fire" 1987 released by Kam & Ronson region A , features a high level correct aspect ratio and High Definition picture transfer & perfect audio presented in Cantonese True HD Dolby & Mandarin Dolby digital , though purists will want the option of a original Mono track, the audio on offer is IMHO far superior, plus correcly translated English subtitles for the main film only. for the m. There are only 2 extra/bonus features which are quite limited.1) Trailer for the film , Cantonese no English subtitles. 2) Interview, No English subtitles, with Cantonese Audio of a man talking played over visual clips from the film & the main theme song sang in Cantonese in the background. I assume this man talking is Ringo Lam the director, as a black & white photograph of a man behind a camera is shown at the start , I Goggled Ringo Lam to match the face up & the first set of Chinese Characters that appear on the right hand side of the photograph. This must rank as one of Chow Yun Fat & Danny Lee's best performances on the silver screen. I have seen reviews that say this is a rushed, rough and tumble early effort of director Ringo Lam , compared to his more sophisticated later work. But I feel that statement is unfair, as this is a in your face thrill ride from start to finish. Very influential film for Quentin Tarantino when he made "Reservoir Dogs" 1992.
Chow Yun Fat established as a star in John Woo's ultimate classic film "A Better Tomorrow" 1986. In this film made in 1987 Chow Yun Fat plays a undercover cop , who wants out of undercover duties, is given one last assignment before he can leave undercover. Another undercover cop is shown being stabbed to death on the streets of Hong Kong by a Triad Society when his cover has been blown away. He was about to phone Chow Yun Fat's uncle who is a high up police man Inspector Lau played by Sun Yeuh a veteran character actor. Inspector Lau's son was a police officer and died young , he puts Chow on the case as a underground gun supplier to infiltrate Danny Lee's jewellery store robbers. Watch the fantastic scene of Chow being introduced to the gang in the grave yard , very intense. After supplying the guns Danny Lee's Triad Society boss wants to recruit Chow and put him in on one of the Jewellery store robberies. Then he is physically beaten up by a police officer who is above inspector Lau , who Lau gets revenge on him in the final, exposing his underhanded techniques. You will have to watch the film to see Chow Yun Fat firing a gun to keep his undercover status when lines between being a police man and gangster get seriously blurred, and then literally puts his life on the line ( I will leave that cliff hanger) and the super bullet flying, blood soaked heroic blood shed final. I have left out quite a lot of the plot, but on the other hand have given you more than enough detail ( maybe a little bit too much) Highly recommend purchase , my other recommendations for Ringo Lam films would be: "Touch and Go" with Sammo Hung , his adventure in to the Martial Arts epic genre with "Burning Paradise" and another absolutely high level classic "Full Contact" again with the fantastic Chow Yun Fat , Thank you.
