This is the true story of Ephraim Mattos, a former US Navy SEAL, and what he witnessed while volunteering as a frontline combat medic during the historic battle to retake Mosul from ISIS - the deadliest urban combat the world has seen since WWII.

After leaving the US Navy SEAL teams in spring of 2017, Ephraim Mattos, age 24, flew to Iraq to join a small group of volunteer humanitarians known as the Free Burma Rangers, who were working on the front lines of the war on ISIS. Until being shot by ISIS on a suicidal rescue mission, Mattos witnessed unexplainable acts of courage and sacrifice by the Free Burma Rangers, who, while under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, assaulted across ISIS minefields, used themselves as human shields, and sprinted down ISIS-infested streets - all to retrieve wounded civilians.

In City of Death: Humanitarian Warriors in the Battle of Mosul, Mattos recounts in vivid detail what he saw and felt while he and the other Free Burma Rangers evacuated the wounded, conducted rescue missions, and at times fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the Iraqi Army against ISIS. Filled with raw and emotional descriptions of what it's like to come face-to-face with death, this is the harrowing and uplifting true story of a small group of men who risked everything to save the lives of the Iraqi people and who followed the credence, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".

As the coauthor of the number-one New York Times best-selling American Sniper, Scott McEwen has teamed up with Mattos to help share an unforgettable tale of an American warrior turned humanitarian forced to fight his way into and out of a hell on earth created by ISIS.

If you want to go back in time to Iraq in 2017 I recommend. Not only is this a historical book, illustrating essential detailed parts of the war with Isis, but it gives life advice too. Forgiveness is a major theme. As a ME junkie this really put in perspective what hero's go through.

Hands down the best memoir I've read in my life. Admittedly I'm not much of a reader but the book was extremely captivating and gave me a glimpse into the life of people affected by a devastating war.

I barely have words to describe how I feel and how much this book changed me.

We all need to let go of the hate. I’ve been filled with it for years. Listening to Ephraim explain his struggles with hate truly resonated with me

Thank you, Ephraim for your service to humanity! Thank you FBR and all Karen volunteers and to every one who selflessly helped victims of an unchosen war.

This is one horrific story of men's evil towards another but also men's kindness and bravery in the face of that evil. We have it so good in the West.

Ephraim Mattos is a Navy Seal gone rogue. Instead of continuing with a post in the military, he threw all that away & flew to Iraq to help the wounded. By doing this he left with no support, nobody from the military to come & get him out of there if he got into trouble. But he was on a mission & he was answering to his calling as that is was important to him. He is an extraordinary man, a humanitarian, a medic, maybe even an Warrior Angel. They do exist but people don't often hear about them because they do their work away from the public eye. If you look up videos of Ephraim being interviewed he has the softest brown eyes that radiate spirituality. I wonder if he even realises how spiritual he is himself. I read this book cover to cover too & I also couldn't put it down. I looked at all the photos over & over again. I think I read that he is writing another one, I do so hope this is true <3
