Product description
It was one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history. On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union suffered a massive explosion that released radioactive material across Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, and as far as Scandinavia and western Europe. This gripping and powerful five-part miniseries follows the tragedy from the moment of the early-morning explosion through the chaos and loss of life in the ensuing days, weeks and months. The cast includes Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard and Emily Watson.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 7, 2021Verified PurchaseThere are so many excellent and accurate reviews of this mini-series already, that it does not really need another. But I have just finished watching it again, and am struck once more by how mesmerising and riveting it is, particularly as it is so painfully and horrifylngly true. The script, direction, and truly realistic performances by the whole cast, and especially the three principals, Jared Harris, Emily Watson, and Stellan Skarsgard, are so enthralling that you forget its a film and almost feel you are actually there, amongst these people, watching it unfold in all its horrendous reality.
It is also a clear indictment of the Soviet system, where truth is a lie, and a lie is truth - if the State says it is. And that is what was the downfall of Valery Legasov, the Jared Harris character: he publicly spoke out the truth of how this ghastly disaster occurred, and laid it at the feet of The State, for which truth he lost his career, his reputation, and in the end, his life. He was never allowed to work as a Scientist again.
It cannot help but evoke some aspects of what our society is experiencing these days - what feels like censorship of free speech and the press; a lack of lively and healthy civilized discussion of disparate opinions; and being Politically Correct at all times. But what is "Political Correctness" but being bullied into being a liar? When you look clearly at what it requires, then that is what it boils down to - if people are really truthful with themselves.
Don't miss this one. Its memorable.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 13, 2021Verified PurchaseDownright amazing show, honest to the true story, not really dramatized other than editing multiple characters into one, on at least one case. Characters are all believable and very well acted for, they’re stories are all individually very engaging and enjoyable to watch. The effects and sets are beautiful, making for every scene to look as good as it can get, and the music is perfect and haunting. The whole show is not for the faint of hearted, it’s dark, depressing and often hard to watch, it’s obviously a sad topic that was a major disaster, and this show does not make it into a hero’s story. It’s all about how terribly it was often handled, and the lies that tried to cover up its scale. Very well done, the definitive watch on the subject
- Reviewed in Canada on June 12, 2025Verified PurchaseVery accurate portrayal of the events of 1986. Disappointed with the excessive profanity throughout. It seems that chernobyl blew up because of excessive swearing in the control room.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 10, 2020Verified PurchaseThis mini-series racked up lots of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. You will want to binge-watch all the episodes.
My only quibble was the fictional scientist Ulana Khomyuk, a "composite character" who is supposed to represent many scientists. Better if unknown actresses and actors had played individual, real life scientists, and portrayed their hassles with government.
The other main characters were real life, and the way they were portrayed by Jared Harris (Valery Legosov, who had to fight the system) and Stellan Skarsgard (Boris Shcherbina, who made the system work) was outstanding. Dialog between them showed them as sometime antagonists who needed each other. The supporting actors, and their roles, were excellent. Particularly Paul Ritter, who played the bully Anatol Dyatlov, the man most responsible for the disaster.
The producers made full use of a shutdown nuclear plant in Lithuania that was a clone of Chernobyl, and a nearby city that resembled the doomed city of Pripyat.
