- Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2020Verified PurchaseAfter years of using a combination of crow bars and/or chisels to force deck boards into position, I finally decided to spend the money and give this tool a try. No contest. It's faster, easier and less strenuous that any other method used in the past. Kicking myself for not buying this sooner.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2020Verified PurchaseBought this tool to aid in installing wonky pressure-treated deck boards... not the so-called 5/4" boards that are actually 1" thick but the similarly mis-labelled 2" boards that are only 1-1/2" thick. Tool broke at the adjustment bolt, which was supposed to allow using with single or double joist applications. Handle is offset but not enough to comfortably clear work boards that you're kneeling on when installing new deck boards. Also, offset creates twist which requires much more effort to use and adds more stress to the tool. Positioning of tool on joist is critical for precise adjustment of bowed boards and if you miscalculate slightly it becomes very difficult to reposition correctly because the tremendous leverage force applied leaves round dimples from the pins on the joist and the tool's pins wants to return there; it's like trying to install a screw into a new hole very close to the original hole... very touchy work. This tool is exclusively designed for 1" thick boards but advertising doesn't inform of this. I needed to repair this tool on jobsite to get work done, so had to break black plastic knob off bolt head to expose it for clamping in vise, then cut this bolt head off flush to extract the metric adjustment bolt M10 x 1.50 and it's captured lock nut from the assembly. Fortunately I had a spare M10 nut from my Kubota tractor spares to jam with original lock nut and was able to reassemble tool to work on single joists only with totally manual adjustment of width. About 3/4 finished deck job, so expect to get by with this tool but wish I had bought a real tool instead of this substitute. Perhaps the BW-1 Monster BoWrench is what I needed.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2020Verified PurchaseI'm not a carpenter or builder but my husband and I were laying deck boards. After some difficulty to place a number of curved/ warped boards he finally purchased this tool. I was able to lay the remainder of the deck boards without his help. Love this tool!
- Reviewed in Canada on August 3, 2022Verified PurchaseBox was not only open but broken in half and you can see where the parts were tried to be taped back in, at least they were all there and the broken box is only cosmetic. The two adjustable prongs allowing for use on a double joist, they had been backed in all the way so you could not see the damage caused by the previous owner, that’s cheesy. But I can understand why the damage was there after trying it. The whole thing is a good concept, but many downfalls. The black knob for
Tightening should be a ratchet handle, larger or a nut for applying a socket to tighten and loosen. If you don’t crank that nut 110% tight the unit tries to lift up and slide back on the joist therefore not allowing any pressure to persuade the board. The main issue is the little orange block I have the arrow pointing at. When you apply pressure on the lever to bring the board in, that little orange block tries to lift up and over the board because it’s made of a super slippery plastic. It also needs to be a couple inches longer to distribute the force and not leave press marks in your deck board, we used oak spacers to save the board edge. The only way to stop this is to tighten the life out of the black knob, but then it’s impossible to back off, so previous user was yanking on the handle backwards to try to re align the two posts which ends up damaging the black plastic sheath. So I totally understand why it was damaged, but with 鶹’s return policy they should have just said it did not work vs me receiving a damaged product. Not a good purchase in my opinion, but with a couple modifications it would be perfect.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2023Verified PurchaseI was using hardwood decking (IPE) on joists with joist tape. The Bowrench did not work for me in any way. The two pins that are supposed to lock onto the joists work not lock. They always slipped on the joist tape and they also completely mangled the tape. Because of this I could not get enough pressure on the IPE deck boards for the Bowrench to be of use. I gave up using it within 15 to 20 minutes. I would have given it 3 stars but within that limited use the weld on one of the pins failed and bent making it even harder to use. First picture show how the pins are not parallel. You can see the crack in the weld in the second picture. This dropped it to a 1 star.
As a side note: I got the adjustable Bowrench because I had single and double width joists. Adjusting the width takes significant time.
Ultimately I used adjustable bar clamps set up as spreaders and temporary blocks screwed into the joists.
