About the author

Ian Fleming was a British author and journalist. His first novel, Casino Royale (1953), introduced spy hero, James Bond, agent 007, to the world. It was the first of fourteen James Bond books which have gone on to sell over 60 million copies worldwide and be translated into 20 languages. Beginning with the movie adaptation of Dr No in 1961, the series also sparked the longest-running film franchise in history. Both Fleming and his fictional counterpart have become synonymous with style, glamour and thrilling adventures, as well as universally recognised phrases such as “My name’s Bond, James Bond” and “shaken and not stirred”.
Fleming was born in London in 1908. In the 1930s he worked at Reuters news agency before joining Naval Intelligence as an officer during the Second World War. His talent for writing fast and engaging prose, along with his knowledge of espionage and his fertile imagination led to the creation of James Bond, arguably one of the most-famous fictional characters of all time. He also wrote children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Fleming was married to Ann Rothermere with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 3, 2015Verified PurchaseGood book, would recommend it.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 20, 2021Verified PurchaseYou want to get a feel for the ‘real’ James Bond? - forget the movies, they are an assortment of semi accurate to downright inaccurate renderings of these books and of the man.
Efficiently written, Ian was clearly a professional who approached his writing as I expect would Mr. Bond himself. Perhaps not surprising.
These are stories of their era, the attitudes and comments reflect their time. Do not look for a story with todays style and treatment of politics, gender and machismo. Put yourself into the post-war era and you will be rewarded with a fine story that in many ways is better than I had expected in the portrayal of the people and their behaviours.
The books miss the dramatic visual effects of explosive action but more than compensate with the richness of character development.
I was particularly impressed with “Quantum of Solace, which is not a story about Bond or spies.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 30, 2004"Casino Royale" is Ian Fleming's first book featuring James Bond, unlike the movie series, where "Dr. No" is the first. I wanted to read Casino Royale because it is the only Bond book that was not made into a movie - if you don't consider the spoof movie with Peter Sellers, David Niven and Woody Allen.
To my surprise, in the books Bond is not the ultimate undestructible human being. He's a common enough person, who almost vomits when he sees the remains of a man who just exploded. Also, he is not that comfortable around women, he thinks about quitting his double-oh position, and he has a problem about being good or being evil. Surprising, huh? The biggest surprise is that he doesn't kill a single person in the entire book.
What I liked about "Casino Royale" was watching the developing of one of the greatest characters of the 20th century, as the author imagined him. The story is simple enough, about financialy breaking a communist agent in a french casino. Fleming writes simply, directly to the reader. There's a touch of the "noir" fashion - the sarcasm, the perfect women - and an unquestionable feeling of the fifties.
"Casino Royale" is a fast, simple read, and necessary to understand the Bond-universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mejor que la película
