I have never owned RC cars before (I'm an adult), but decided to get one for my daughter and partner last christmas. I did a fair amount of research into brands, types, costs, and decided to try the HBX offroad vehicle as it seemed pretty tough and still quite fast. I'm posting my review here for model 16889, but I also bought model 18859A and basically my feedback applies to both vehicles.
Out of the package, these things look great. They are quite fast, and can handle a lot of terrain. I was worried that my nine year old might not be able to control it, but she was a better driver than me after about two days.
We've got a lot of use out of them, but after a few months, one of the parts on the front axle of model 18859A broke. The car would still drive, but with less control. HBX has an online store where you can buy replacement parts, or you can order them through �鶹��. I ended up ordering the axle part along with more body clips from the HBX website. (Note: you will lose all the body clips quickly - they just fall out going over rough terrain and bumps, we ended up using paper clips when we ran out of replacements).
Anyway, my order from HBX arrived, and I discovered that somewhere in transit, the envelope had been cut clean open, and the replacement parts for the axle were missing, although the body clips did manage to stay in the envelope. Did this happen at customs? Who knows, but what I paid for never arrived. I sent HBX three messages through their website but never received a response.
In the meantime, one of the rear axles on the 16889 model broke. We were able to continue driving it, again with less control, but eventually the entire rear wheel broke off.
I went back to the HBX website and re-ordered the part that never arrived, as well as the parts I now needed to fix on the 16889 model.
Despite the fact that the car manual provides detailed views of the internal layout as well as a parts list, and the same itemized parts lists can be found on the website, the parts I ordered were not entirely what I needed. As well, I found that some of the parts that appear to be removable but connected to other parts, in fact are not, and you must buy replacements of these parts as well.
So anyway, I have had to re-order more parts again. And since these are coming direct from China, there is a long delay as they are processed in Canada. The delivery status will say it has arrived at the shipping terminal in Vancouver, and then nothing happens for a week or more. The delivery times are frustrating, and the fact that none of these parts can be purchased locally is frustrating because you really don't know if you've ordere the correct parts until they arrive.

All in all, we have enjoyed racing these vehicles, and the price is pretty good compared to other brands. The quality seems rather poor to me, but I can't compare to other brands, and I have to admit that we did drive them pretty hard. I just don't know if it's worth the effort to try to repair them once they start to break.

When it comes time to replace these, I will most likely try a different brand at a slightly higher price point.

Ordered this based on what I had read about it on reddit and seen on YouTube. It worked great out of the box. Plenty of pep and tracked well over grass without issue thanks to the 4wd. Unfortunately after I ran the second pack through it it started acting up. Either the remote or transmitter stopped working properly. The truck started moving on its own and the steering it's non functional. I checked and tested the servo and it appears to be fine but it's always trying to move one way or the other even if I'm not on the remote. If parts were easily available in my LHS I would likely keep it as it would be cheap and easy to fix/maintain. Parts are not available within a time frame that would satisfy my 5 year old so I'm going to spend a bit more and get something higher end that has parts available locally.
