There are so many ways to print images on the SELPHY CP1500, it’s easy to pick the one that works best for you, whether that is WiFi, AirPrint, USB (computer and USB flash drive), your camera memory card, or the SELPHY Photo Layout smartphone app.

Instantly dry and marker ready

Thanks to the dye-sublimation printing process, the prints exit the printer completely dry and ready to handle, and with the final overcoat layer, they are even water-resistant! That means they are also marker ready in case you want to write a personal message on your photo. Prints produced with this technology can last up to 100 years(4)!

Use the free app for even more options

SELPHY Layout is the free companion app for the SELPHY printers that let you print, edit, and add fun effects right from your Smartphone. Now updated to V3.0, the SELPHY Layout app lets you organize how you want to print your images. You can create collages, choose which images you want to use for mini-stickers, add pattern overcoat effects, and even add QR codes to your prints to direct someone to a specific webpage.

New finishing options

Most dye-sub printers can only produce glossy prints (because the final overcoat layer is glossy), but Canon has learned how to change the texture of the final print so that you can choose from glossy, semi-gloss and satin finishes. Additionally, you can print patterns into the overcoat layer to give your images a subtle pop of texture.

Disclaimers

(1) Wireless printing requires a working network with wireless 802.11b/g 2.4ghz compatibility. Wireless performance may vary based on terrain and distance between the printer and wireless network clients.

(2) AirPrint functionality requires an iPad, iPhone 3GS or later, or iPod touch 3rd generation or later device running iOS 4.2 or later, and an AirPrint-enabled printer connected to the same network as your iOS device. A printer connected to the USB port of your Mac, PC, AirPort Base station, or Time Capsule is not supported.

(3) Requires an Internet connection and the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app or SELPHY Layout app, available for free on the App Store and at Google Play. Your device must be connected to the same working network with wireless 802.11 b/g capability as your printer.

(4) Compatible memory cards include SD Card, SDHC Card. The following can be used with the addition of a special adapter sold separately: miniSD Card, miniSDHC Card, microSD Card, microSDHC Card, microSDXC Card.

(5) Based on accelerated testing by Canon in dark storage under controlled temperature, humidity and gas conditions, simulating storage in an album with plastic sleeves. Results may vary depending on printed image, display/storage conditions, and environmental factors.

I've been really happy with this compact photo printer. I was using an Instax printer for years prior but was wanting something that printed photos that were a bit bigger. I thought about getting the larger format instax printer but honestly the price of the instax prints and lack of updated ports (use of micro USB) made this very off putting for me. I ended up picking up the Canon Selphy and I'm so happy I did! While it's definitely not as compact as the instax set ups, it's still something you can pack away for a trip if you want it with you, particularly if you're going over seas and have a check in luggage. I used this to make prints for relatives while I was in Asia and it was a big hit. The photos out of this are quite excellent when you consider how quick the print. Within a 30 seconds or so you have a high quality 4x6 print in your hand.The price per print is not bad at all when you buy in bulk. It really makes a big difference taking your photos from a phone screen to printed on a physical medium. Honestly something every photographer should have. 100% would recommend!

I purchased the Cp 1500 to replace a 5-year old Selphy (Cp 1200) which is still working well despite over a thousand prints flowing through its rollers with only 1 failure. And that failure was the fault of a communication error between my phone and the printer and not the printer itself. I'll pass the old one on to a family member.

As a dye sublimation printer there's no messy ink, print susceptibility to smearing or fading. or waiting for a print to dry before handling. Longevity of the print is another plus. No ink, no fading. Relying on dye transfer, the printer passes a sheet of photo paper through the machine four times laying color during the first three passes with last pass adding a protective layer. It takes about 30 seconds per print.

Canon's continued support and standardization across the Selphy line deserves special mention. The cartridges used for my older Selphy are the same as that used in the CP 1500. And the price for those cartridges has remained reasonably stable even during these inflationary times. They remain ~32 cents per print which is comparable to local drug store or big box store costs per print.

Print quality is excellent. I've left it unused for months and subsequent print quality is the same as if it was under continuous use.

For print quality, convenience and price per print, the Selphy beats the hassle of inkjet printers, their expensive ink and susceptibility to clogging during long periods of misuse.

If there is a drawback to this photo printer, it's dedicated to the 4" x 6" print standard. That's not a bad thing since most consumers looking for a quick print would prefer the economy of that size print.

Wrapping it up: Convenience, cost, durability and print quality are this printer's strengths, and you would be hard pressed to find those four factors in another home printer at this price point.
