So much Fun.
Well, this was my first day with this lens and I absolutely loved it! If you have never (I had not either) shot wide angle, it is so much fun. Like taking pictures with only primes, you look at everything differently. I will not review the lens itself, there are so many better qualified to do so than me....and this gets really good reviews at this sorta money, better than the 10-22mm at twice the price. Did I say it was light, carry all day lens? Perfect for me on the move. I will say, if you are still worried (at this price) about corner to corner sharpness, vignetting & barrel distortion you are spending way too much time reading and not enough time taking pictures. If you are taking pictures dead on perfectly straight brick walls to see barrel distortion, not only do your pictures suck, you have way too much time on your hands. Equipment nowadays is way better than most non-professional pictures takers anyways. If you cannot take good pictures with this lens, you are doing something wrong! The hardest thing is keeping your horizons straight. My only suggestion, this lens is slow at max F4.5. If you are shooting indoors such as Real Estate or Churches you need a tripod. This is not a lens for stopping action indoors. Get a 24mm F2.8 (or something) for taking pictures of your kids. When shooting landscape, you are shooting ~F8.0 or higher anyway for depth of field, this lens is perfect for that. The Image Stabilization on this 'slow' lens is a really great inclusion as it is useful and needed handheld. My first day out, 15km group hike, weather sucked (no sun), running from picture to picture with no time to think, came away with some fun, interesting pictures that are totally shareable. As time goes on, good weather, have more time to compose shots and 'understand' wide angle, it can only get better from here. Some might say my photo's are mediocre and they would be 100% correct but I am doing it, and sharing it nonetheless. It would not be fun otherwise (T1i camera, first day 10-18mm IS STM). [Update] - added some more picture (sunset/buildings) once weather was good. The top of the sunset sky almost right above me (wide angle at work). Note the lens flare, this lens is not immune.

Nothing to dislike about it for the price compared to Canon's more expensive L lenses. This lens is sharp, light and compact. Photo quality at various focal lengths nearly equals a Canon L lens in a similar focal range. I bought it from 鶹.ca and it arrived within days. There is no Canon USA and Canada warranty card in the box. This is a grey market lens providing roughly a $50 savings. The lens was purchased for a 25 day Scandinavian vacation (Denmark, Sweden and Norway). I added a scalloped shaped plastic lens hood and a clear filter. The hood saved the lens from a bump against a wall of a moving sightseeing bus. The filter protected the front element from light rain whenever the camera was brought from under my jacket to grab a shot. A microfibre cloth was used to wipe the rain droplets from the filter. The autofocus is silent and doesn't draw attention inside a church. The zoom ring has no play and is solid like an L quality lens. The Image Stabilization increased the number of keepers allowing me to shoot as low as 1/20 second hand held at any focal length without the use of a tripod or monopod. I am keeping this lens as my only travel lens. Strongly recommended for street and interior photography.

After having my T4i with the standard package lens, I had decided to expand my lens collection. Of course the choices are many and as a amateur, I wanted the best value for dollars spent and this does not disappoint! Canon lenses are known for quality and durability. Although this is not the best wide angle lens available, after using it for several weeks, I am convinced it was the best for me as it balances my needs for quality on a budget!
The view itself is a balance too. While the image is slightly distorted around the perimeter, as wide angle lenses will do, it is not pronounced and for me, not usually noticeable until I pan across my subject area viewing through the viewfinder.
If you're looking for a great wide angle lens but don't want (or need) professional quality, have no fear about this choosing this one!

Works well. No issues I can see, especially for the price vs. performance. You can actually get fairly close to objects as well. Aperture is slow f4.5 on the wide end, but depending on what you do with it may not affect you much. Worst thing about it is the plastic mount, but photo quality is excellent in my opinion. Look up Ken Rockwell for a review of this lens. Actually bought it to use on my Fujifilm XH2 with a Fringer adapter. I can’t see myself using it too much but rounds out my lens selection for a cheap price. Might actually work as well as Fuji’s own wide lenses that cost infinitely more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great optics - good price - small and lightweight - what's not to like?
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2016

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM (used with T2i body)

I had long wished to purchase the Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens, but had hesitated due to its price. When the 10-18mm was introduced at less than half the price, I was curious and when lens tests showed it to be of comparable image quality, my interest was piqued. Yes, the 10-18mm has a smaller aperture, but the addition of image stabilization, which the 10-22 does not have, should be more than enough compensation. The reduced zoom range may result in somewhat more frequent lens changes, but for $350 savings, I can live with that. The metal lens mount of the 10-22 is surely stronger and more rugged, but the 10-18 is so lightweight and compact that I suspect the plastic mount is more than adequate, particularly for amateur use. The one area of optical performance where tests show the 10-18 to be at a disadvantage is light falloff (vignetting) at corners and edges at large apertures. I reasoned that in practice, I will use the lens mostly outdoors at an aperture of f8 or more where the performance of the two lenses is reported as similar.

On initial examination, the lens feels of higher quality than Canon's "kit" lenses, as befits its higher price. Specifically, the zoom and focus adjustments are much smoother and there is no looseness in the front element, as there is in the EF-S 18-55, for example. The lens is considerably smaller and lighter weight than the 10-22 and is close in size and weight to the 18-55, albeit with a larger diameter front element. I find that my small sling bag (Case Logic SLRC-205) easily accommodates the addition of the EF-S 10-18 with the hoods mounted on all three lenses (reversed on the EF-S 55-250). The EF-S 10-18 ships with a nice center pinch lens cap which affords easy removal and replacement with the hood in place.

My first opportunity to use the lens was probably a worst case scenario: indoors without flash and wide open at ISO 1600. The results were predictable from the optical tests: strong vigneting at shorter focal lengths and when the "peripheral illumination correction" is applied in DPP, detail at corners and edges is marred by noise. This is not too severe a problem if your exposures are spot on, but it leaves little room for correction. There is modest barrel distortion at the wide end that is easily corrected in DPP. Speaking of DPP, I was pleased to find that lens data for the 10-18mm is now available on the Canon site, since it was not before I ordered the lens, so be sure to update DPP to the current version and then update the lens data in the DLO module. DPP's DLO does an admirable job of correcting CA and sharpness issues and, along with DPP's other lens tools, virtually banishes all lens shortcomings. For me, DPP's lens corrections are reason enough to buy Canon lenses.

Now, having used the lens for about 16 months, I've found that it easily meets my original expectations. The vignetting is its only real shortcoming but is quite manageable and correctable in most situations. Maximum aperture is not an issue since I am usually shooting at f8-f11 to maximize depth of field while avoiding diffraction softness (a function of the APS format, not the lens.) "Focus by wire" is somewhat less easy to use than a mechanical link, but its more of a change in paradigm than a handicap. The lack of zoom range overlap with my "kit" lens is occasionally inconvenient, but not $350 worth. When using a polarizer (Hoya HRT), the corners of the image will be clipped at focal lengths less than about 12mm, but this is eliminated when distortion correction is applied in DPP, even at 10mm. A polarizer is of limited value at short focal lengths anyway due to the wide variation in sky luminance. As noted above, it is quite sharp when DPP's DLO corrections are applied. Its small size and light weight assure that I have it with me, in fact, I probably carry it mounted more than any other lens. In summary, I'm pleased with the EFS-10-18mm lens and thrilled with the savings in cost and bulk as compared to the 10-22mm, not to mention the benefit of IS. I highly recommend this lens!
