Product description

From the Manufacturer

This compact and lightweight EF 75-300mm telephoto zoom lens is ideal for shooting sports, portraits, and wildlife. The lens is distinguished by a newly developed micro ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that makes autofocusing quicker and quieter, along with an improved zoom mechanism that includes a silver ring on the front for a luxurious touch. The micro USM makes this version of the lens particularly suitable for applications that require a fast autofocus, such as sporting events or wildlife shoots. Best of all, the USM version shares many of the same features that makes the non-USM lens so popular, such as a compact size, a close focusing range, and accessory compatibility. As with all Canon lenses, this unit carries a one-year warranty.

  • Focal length: 75-300mm
  • Maximum aperture: 1:4.5-5.6
  • Lens construction: 13 elements in 9 groups
  • Diagonal angle of view: 32 degrees (at 11 feet) to 8 degrees (at 15 feet)
  • Focus adjustment: Front group rotating extension system with USM
  • Closest focusing distance: 4.9 feet
  • Zoom system: Rotating type
  • Filter size: 58mm
  • Dimensions: 2.8 inches in diameter, 4.8 inches long
  • Weight: 16.8 ounces Compact and lightweight 4x telephoto zoom lens ideal for shooting sports, portraits, and wildlife. The newly developed Micro USM makes autofocusing quicker and quieter. The improved zoom mechanism also makes zooming smoother. The front part of the zoom ring now sports a silver ring for a luxury touch.

With the addition of a Micro USM for faster and even quieter autofocus, this version of the EF 75-300mm is well-suited for sports and other applications requiring fast AF. The USM version shares the compact size, close focusing range, and accessory compatibility of the non-USM lens. For many advanced amateurs, the 75-300 range is ideal as a versatile entry into telephoto photography.

    Isolate the Interesting Part
The eye tends to see the whole rather than the individual parts. It also sees whatís near and not whatís far. By bringing attention to those things missed by the eye, you can create many interesting pictures. It could be the grimace of an athlete, the grill of a classic car, or a girl against a blurred background. Telephoto lenses can also compress images to give dramatic effects. You are limited only by your imagination.

Canon's worst and cheapest long telephoto zoom lens, find EF-S instead.

Canon's worst and cheapest long telephoto zoom lens, find EF-S instead.
This is not a good lens in any sense other than it's 300mm reach. It's long name is misleading, as this lens is both basic and missing any special features. It has no image stabilization (IS) which is EXTREMELY important for shooting with a long lens like this. On shorter lenses like the 18-55 range there are many good lenses without IS, but on long focal lengths like this it is completely standard. Without IS you will need to use a shutter speed of 1/300 just to get stable handheld shots when zoomed in, which will not be easy considering you'll already be at f/5.6. A zoom lens with IS can be handheld, this lens will almost always require a tripod for wildlife shooting. Aside from this huge problem there are many small failures. On my 450D this lens is terrible at focusing, the camera doesn't "see" what is under the focus point compared to the 18-55mm kit lens. This lens also has terrible chromatic aberrations, which are color distortions in the photos like magenta and green fringes on high contrast branches. You can see an example in my review of this lens on dpreview: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3627377 Overall this lens is too cheap to be a great value. If you have a crop sensor camera like a Rebel/700D/70D/7D then there are much better EF-S lenses with IS that are still affordable, like the "Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM", which has almost as much reach but much more modern internals most importantly image stabilization (IS). If you have a full-frame Canon camera like 6D/5D/1D (which can't use the cheaper EF-S lenses) then this lens is in fact a huge bargain compared to the next cheapest option is at least twice the price. That said, if you have a full frame camera then you've clearly invested a lot of money into it, and this lens will not make good use of the quality of your camera.

This is a great entry level telephoto lens. It's pretty reliable and I take it everywhere. Overall, it works very well. I have had some trouble with it not electronically connecting to my Rebel, but this is a rare occurrence and seems to only happen in the cold.

You get what you pay for. The main problem with this lenses, and it is something to be aware of, is that it doesn't have image stabilization. If you are zooming in a lot, you get a lot of shake. You need to have a tripod or something of the sort or else your picture will be blurry. If you have that, then this is a very good lens. But I haven't been using it as much as I wanted because it doesn't have image stabilization. I knew that before hand, and I bought it knowing that, but the stars are my opinion about what the product is, and the product is "just okay".

This lens has one strength and one only: it's cheap. If you want something inexpensive to get started, its a consideration. I'd recommend saving your money for something even a little better.

I bought one with my first DSLR (had been out of photography since the film days) and thought I was doing something wrong. It wasn't me. The image quality is pretty awful. Images are far from sharp, lens does not focus accurately, hunts for focus badly, and suffers from severe chromatic aberration.

I'd recommend saving up for a 70-300 IS (not expensive on the used market) or better yet pick up the v2 with the nano USM like I did. Its not L series, but far cheaper and does a good job unlike this piece of garbage.

If you are looking for an inexpensive beginners telephoto lens, this is your solution.
Do not have very high expectations though as being cheap, it has its weaknesses. Causes some chromatic aberrations at the top zoom range that can be fixed in post. At higher zoom levels, you will definitely miss the image stabilization but within this price point, it is an unreasonable expectation. Use a tri-pod and you'll be alright.
