- Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2024Verified PurchaseI meant for this as a backup only, and sure enough, forgot my matches and it became my primary way to start a camp fire. I had a fire starter, so I dug into the Firestarter block to loosen it up and nestled the stick into that, then used the metal piece and it worked well! Tip - untie the metal piece, and use fast, hard strokes that go all the way down the stick part. I was impressed how easy it went when I got the technique right.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 19, 2025Verified PurchaseThey work. I used them to start fires camping using thin birch bark. It took a few practise runs pulling across the rod to get maximum spark intensity, but it worked good.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 4, 2025Verified PurchaseThey work but are on the small size. The kids love practicing starting fires with them.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 13, 2024Verified PurchaseThe ferro rod keeps coming out of the holder. Wish it was bigger but price was good
- Reviewed in Canada on July 16, 2023Verified PurchaseIt's a good little device. Works well. I wouldn't want anything smaller as I have large hands. I believe the only criticism I have is when you first get it, it has a coating of something on the outside of the rod, maybe paint? Anyways, I tried to use it and the steel would just skip off the rod without spark. Once I removed that light layer of black coating exposing the shiny rod underneath, I could from that point create plenty of sparks and I could feel the steel grab the rod instead of skipping over it like before. So, yeah, beyond that little hiccup, it is a nice little survival tool for a good price and I would buy it again if need be.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 13, 2024Verified PurchaseVery hard to use. Even when you get a spark it's not as hot and does not burn as long as my old ferro rod. I couldn't imagine using this during an emergency in poor conditions. Spend a few extra dollars and get a better quality one. I don't recommend this one.
