With the adapter valve off, It will tell you the residual pressure in the 1lb bottle. When you turn the supply cylinder on, and open the adapter valve, it will show the increasing pressure in the 1lb bottle. To get a good fill, you HAVE to put the empty 1lb bottles in the freezer overnight. Once you freeze the refill bottle, you can definitely hear the propane flowing into the small bottle as you open the adapter valve s.l.o.w.l.y. until the flow stops or the gauge reads green.
For those that can't hear the gas flowing and nothing happens when to open the adapter valve, you probably forgot to open the supply bottle valve first. Attaching the adapter does not automatically open the main supply valve and cause the gas to flow from the large supply bottle through the adapter. Once full, shut off the adapter valve and unscrew the 1lb bottle.
HINT: You may have better luck screwing on the small bottle by turning the adapter sideways and screwing on the bottle horizontally.
