Purchase options and add-ons

  • This DW735 OEM cutterhead is machined slightly larger to give you a cutterhead that is the same size as the one you are removing. You will need to remove the inserts from the cutterhead prior to install, and then replace them after the cutterhead is in place.
  • Staggered, spiral carbide insert configuration provides a shear, rather than straight cut for a smoother finish and quieter operation.
  • Helical insert knife configuration breaks up chips, making dust collection easier.
  • Replace individual inserts when dull or damaged, rather than having to replace an entire expensive knife blade; comes with 5 replacement inserts.
  • Made in the USA!

Product description

The ORIGINAL SHEar & heLIX spiral cutter non grind design! Made in the USA by Byrd Tool Corp., these indexable carbide insert cutterheads provide a shear, staggered cut instead of a single, straight knife cut. Not only does this provide a superior finish on your work piece, it is a lot easier on your dust collection system because the configuration of the inserts breaks up the chips. Another benefit to the indexed insert design is ease of maintenance. Dull or damaged insert knives are individually replaced, a much more cost effective option than having to replace expensive knives the full length of your planer head. Each cutterhead comes with 5 extra inserts and a torque driver to aid insert replacement. The Dewalt DW735 replacement cutterhead now comes in two sizes. The original was sized slightly smaller (.0078 inches) than the OEM cutterhead in order to fit through the hole in the chassis with the inserts still mounted on the cutterhead. This OEM cutter is machined slightly larger to give you a cutterhead that is the same size as the one you are removing. You will need to remove the inserts prior to install, and then replace them once the cutterhead is in place.

hard to install, there are cheaper options, and not accurate at all

hard to install, there are cheaper options, and not accurate at all
1 and 2 are from shelix, and the 3rd is from stock straight blade. I use my not-so-powerful CXS installed all my cutters after I put everything in. The result was not great, some lines, which is super normal for 1st time user. Then I removed all cutters with my CXS from the spindle, cleaned all of them again, and reinstalled all the cutters with my hand( which wasn't fun). it's better but still not good enough. I remove all cutters from the spindle again with my hand and cleaned them again and reinstalled with my hand again, it's much better with only two lines. And I removed cleaned and reinstalled the 8 cutters around the line areas, finally there is no lines. But I noticed the board still not flat. as you can see from the video, not sure if this is normal or I just got a defective unit. when I hand tighten the cutters, I made sure all clean and against the edge, if I miss aligned some cutters I do admit it's possible, but from what I see, it's like at least half of the cutters misaligned. again, I spent so much time on this, as a formal cellphone repair technician, computer hardware technician, geek squad agent, serious weekend woodworker for 5 years, I don't feel like I wanna spend more time on this, any more work to install a cutter head should not be sold as a finished product.

As most reviewers have indicated, the installation of the cutterhead is not a simple task particularly if you’re not the most mechanical like me. I watched the Chris Wong video and found that he and I had far different issues with the removal and installation. He took 15 minutes to remove the snap ring. I had never done one before and it took me 15 seconds! What is important is to be very, very careful when unscrewing anything on the planer. Mine is over 10 years old and many bolts and screws have been fused on. I stripped a Phillips screw just trying to remove one of the plastic covers.

If you buy the full size cutterhead and remove all the inserts, watch a video on reinserting them. If they are out even a fraction, you will get marks on your work like I did initially. Since you can’t really see which ones are out, I wound up removing and inserting all of them. Once I did, everything was fine.

I haven’t used the planer a lot since installing the new cutterhead, but so far, it cuts much better than the original. I used to get a lot of cut out when planing anything below 1/4”. Now, it cuts smoothly right down to 1/8”. It is quieter but not substantially since the fan is noisy.

So far, I’m happy with the investment.

This is a true helical, shearing action cutterhead that performs very well, even with highly figured wood. Be careful with installation and take your time.

Sur planeur DW735 fait parfaitement. Beaucoup moins bruyant. Plus belle finition, arrache pas le bois. Moins sensible sur les noeuds. Dispendieux à l’achat mais pas à long terme. Très bon upgrade!
