About the Author
In the late 1990’s Swain, along with most people reading this book, had his dot-com boom-to-bust experience with a company called. . .well, that’s not really important now is it. (Anyone interested in buying some slightly underwater stock options should contact the publisher immediately.) After that there were consulting stints at Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Best Crossmark developing sales support applications and reporting tools. As of this writing, Swain basks under the fluorescent lights of Brierley, a technology company whose specialty is building customer relationship and loyalty management systems for retailers. The author has had the opportunity to learn from the very best as Brierley also provides unparalleled business intelligence and analytics services for its clients.
Swain lives in Dallas, Texas with wife Nancy and a mere four dogs. He writes about more than just technology; his work has appeared in Fodor’s travel guide books, military history magazines, and even another For Dummies book.

About the author

I'm a full-time technology professional in Oregon and I've written on a broad range of topics, including technology (shocker!), gambling, history, travel, and more. My obvious book writing influences are J.D. Salinger. and Harper Lee..not for style, and certainly no for quality, but strictly in terms of output. So far I'm averaging 11 years per book. Hoping to break the mythical decade barrier with my next one.
Contact me directly, or follow me on Twitter: @swainscheps - I'd like to hear from you and what you think of my book(s) - for better or worse. I appreciate all feedback - and I'll put it to use in the next edition, or in future writing.
Also - visit my website. www.swainscheps.com
If you're a sports bettor and/or if you bought or are thinking of buying Sports Betting for Dummies, I'll publish some additional trends, notes, and links to content on topics that I couldn't squeeze into the book. With 400 pages of writing and diagrams, mistakes are inevitable. I'll make sure to highlight the most important corrections and clarifications that readers need to know about.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 1, 2020Verified PurchaseEasy to read and the table of content is really well structured. Very useful when you need a specific piece of information.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2010This book is an excellent introduction to anyone who wants to know more about business intelligence. The book is written in plain English, it's really easy to understand even if your first language isn't English. The other good thing with this book is that you don't need to read the entire book to understand, you can just read the parts where you need more information about it. In addition inside the book you will find how to start your BI project.

2.0 out of 5 stars Viel Text, wenig Inhalt
Verified PurchaseIch habe diesem Buch lange eine Chance gegeben. Immer dachte ich-ok, jetzt kommt etwas konkretes, etwas dass nicht jeder weiß. Naja, es kam nicht.
Viel Text, wenig Inhalt. Ich weiss nicht, ob es an das Thema lag. Schade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Juuuuuust Right!
Verified PurchaseAfter receiving this book I began to read it immediately. If the has a terrible writing style I tend to lose interest very quickly. I have read the first four chapters and have yet to lose interest in this book. The first three chapters, as usual, are the foundation (basics) for the remainder of the book. These chapters might seem stale and one might be tempted to skip over them. I have found that, unlike other books, the first three chapters are filled with conceptual and practical information and situations that I have personally encountered. This is significant to me in that it shows the author has practical application experience or has really done their research. The author shows that they know what one goes through when trying to implement a BI solution.
Although I have only read four chapters, I can assure you that I am a picky reader. If this author spent excessive time using large words in hopes of impressing the reader, I would be the first to scream for you not to buy this book. The author writes in a very relaxed and reader friendly tone. If you are looking to gain a good understanding of BI and the concepts of how to go about implementing your own solution, this is a great book (in my humble opinion).
This is the first "dummies" series book I have ever bought and it is quite possible I will explore others due to this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book
Verified PurchaseI was disappointed by the lengthy start but later on everything comes to place. The book is a good overview of the main BI issues you can encounter and is a pleasant reading even for more experienced readers.
