From the manufacturer

Vert Engine

Repowering your equipment with Briggs & Stratton

Briggs & Stratton engines are the perfect small engines to power the equipment you use to maintain your home and yard, like a garden tiller, log splitter, pressure washer, water pump or portable generator. Count on our versatile and durable utility engines to perform consistently and start easily, no matter how tough the job.

Engine Selection

Engine Selection

Match the engine¡¯s performance and cost to your specific application to get the optimum performance. That means better value for you.

  • Vanguard OHV (overhead valve) engines are maximum performance, cast iron sleeved engines. Select for continuous heavy duty applications.
  • Professional Series, Commercial Series (Industrial/Commercial) engines are cast iron sleeved. Select for medium duty commercial, industrial and rental use.
  • Intek and Powerbuilt engines are aluminum cylinder bore OHV engines. Select for general consumer use.
  • Standard engines are aluminum cylinder bore, side valve engines. Select for general consumer use.

Installation

Engine Installation

It is important to maintain the original engine¡¯s size, starter type and position, fuel tank location, fuel line routing, muffler location, exhaust direction and muffler accessories (i.e., deflector, spark arrester, etc.). Reinstall all guards, shields and safety devices. Replace missing, worn or damaged parts.

Engine

Vertical Crankshaft Engines

Compare the overall engine size to avoid possible mounting interference.

  • Match the crankshaft

  1. A - Diameter
  2. B - Height (distance from base to crankshaft center line)
  3. C - Length (distance from oil seal/cover¡¯s mounting face to end of crankshaft)

  • Match the crankshaft type, i.e., keyway, tapered or threaded
  • Match the crankcase cover¡¯s tapped holes for mounting accessories (if applicable)
  • Match the base mounting dimensions and bolt hole spacing

Maintenance

Engine Maintenance

Regular lawn mower maintenance helps prevent problems, plus lengthens the life of your lawn equipment. But even with plenty of TLC, normal wear and tear from hours of mowing the lawn increases the chances of hitting a glitch from time to time. We recommend using our maintenance kits to ensure your engine is running smoothly all season long.

Received by delivery in good shape. Have not had a chance to run it yet, but expect no surprises. Only 3 wires to hook up and starter connection to a solenoid. No instructions with that but should not be too hard to figure out.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good

Ordered this engine as a replacement. I had a 15.5 Hp engine in my lawn mower before this one's a few more Hp. Install was pretty easy. Disconnect all the electrical.
Take out the center bolt on pulley after taking your belts off. Slide the pulley off.
There are four bolts holding the engine in place. These are self-tapping bolts. You do not need to tap the holes on the new engine.
Pull off old engine, put new engine in place. Line up holes.
Take manufacturer bolts. Put it into the hole with an impact gun and just have at it. The bolts are hardened steel & will cut into the soft metal. They do not need to be tapped beforehand.
Make sure the key is either on the new engine or in the pulley slide that onto the new engine put bolt in. (At this time you need to add oil add minimum 1 quart)
The connector or wires that went to your ignition solenoid from your old engine. Just hook up the wires from color. Mine were black and gray, I had to do some modification to the wires. Put waterproof crimps on the wires with heat shrink.
Took the end off the yellow wire connected the yellow wire off the rectifier to the red wire coming from my engine harness. That's what powered my battery.
Before installing the belts and hooking up the fuel, try just cranking the engine over a few times to get the oil splashing around through the engine. Then you can hook up the fuel and hook up your belts and start it up. (AT 5 HOURS OF RUN TIME NEED TO CHANGE OIL IN ENGINE SINCE IT DOES NOT HAVE A FILTER MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDS) After that you can change the oil once a year. Good mowing.

5.0 out of 5 stars REPLACE or REPAIR

I am a do-it yourselfer and have a 2017 Troy-Bilt Pony that originally had a Briggs & Stratton 17.5 Power Built Engine after 6+ years of use and just after replacing the 42" Deck completely, the compression relief valve decided to break preventing the engine to start. So, I was faced with attempting to make that engine repair, (internally) for a new compression relief valve part (priced at $200 for the kit only), plus my time and risk finding additional internal damage to other internal parts or replace the engine entirely. After looking at the cost at new riding lawn mowers, plus the fact I already replaced the deck I opted to replace the engine. This Briggs & Stratton 31R907-0007-G1 500cc 17.5 Gross HP Engine installation was easy, providing you take your time and review YouTube videos prior to starting the job. I suggest you pre-tap the mounting holes with a 3/8 x 16 tap in order to reuse the self-tapping mounting screws. I had to use a utility propane torch to break the hold loose on the crank. I removed / re-used my original exhaust. Engine removal was easy, take photos of fuel lines, linkage and wiring just in case. New engine lined up and bolted right up. Had to remove the new muffler (1/4" Allen). Wire harness took some study. In my case I swapped out the wire harness for the fuel solenoid with my old harness so that the gray and black wire from the fuel solenoid and the black wire from the ignition coil would easily connect to my original connector. I clipped and re-used the connector from the red and black wire from the stator alternator to connect to the voltage regulator, red wire to red wire from voltage regulator and attached the black wire to the black ground wire on the voltage regulator. Did not have to do anything with the yellow wire. Attached battery (hot - red) cable to starter. Added 44 oz. of Briggs & Stratton HD30 Oil to filler tube. I kept my old dip stick because I liked the yellow color cap. Turned the key and it fired right up. Hopped on any mulched the leaves. No adjustments to the carburetor or linkage were required. Took me overall 8 hours by myself, (cautiously). Glad I did it. If your mower is over 6+ years old and the deck and transmission are in good shape I recommend swapping the engine. I also recommend that you consider replacing the upper and lower transmission drive belts if needed. Also suggest you also take apart and clean the steering linkage / gears while the engine is off. Hope this review helps.
