MY FAVORITE EASY TO USE TEA KETTLE!!!
Top reviews from Canada

- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2016Verified PurchaseThis is a nice kettle! Of course! It's what you expect when you pay this much, right? You must really enjoy your hot water if you're really considering this product. Well, I'm with you, because I like Breville products and I have made use of this kettle's features. I think that's the main point I'd tell you if you're considering buying - make sure that the feature set makes sense for your application. I French press coffee on occasion, and my wife and I generally enjoy brewing various kinds of teas. Sometimes we also just like cooler hot water! So clicking a button and having it take care of it, is nice. This kettle is also one of the fastest I've used - must have a good motor.
The one problem I have is that the base is constantly warm when it's plugged in. Not sure if it's just my unit - but I usually unplug it when not in use. Otherwise, I have used it daily to heat up water for my oatmeal and it works great. Two years now, and no issues. I paid quite a deal less for this compared to its current price - and even then had trouble justifying the spend - but again, if you can make use of the variable settings, it's the kettle for you!
- Reviewed in Canada on May 28, 2025Verified PurchaseWe bought this to replace a Cuisinart kettle which lasted only a couple of years before the lid broke. Some pro’s right off the bat are — better opening/closing mechanism design, good quality materials, water level can be seen from 2 sides… This should last a long time under normal circumstances.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 3, 2023Verified PurchaseI am thoroughly impressed with the style and quality of the Breville 1.8L Variable Temperature Kettle BKE820XL in Silver. It exudes elegance with its sleek design, and the stainless steel construction ensures durability. The precise temperature control adds to its appeal, making it a top choice for tea enthusiasts. Overall, I highly recommend this kettle for its exceptional style and quality.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 9, 2016Verified PurchaseThis kettle is my prize now. Makes mornings so so easy, and the best part is the keep warm option. I'm that person that always forgets about the electric kettle after its done boiling and then forget to make myself some tea. Not with this guy. The beeping is not annoying, but very helpful for me. Beeps when its ready, keeps it hot if I forget or am busy, and then beeps again much later on to remind me. It's a tea-drinker dream. I really have nothing to criticize here. Except that I bought it refurbished on 鶹, came in and didnt work, and breville replaced it immediately. So again, even my one issue was resolved in a jiffy.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 17, 2016Verified PurchaseThis is by far the best kettle I've ever owned. I wanted to spend a bit more for a higher quality product and this was worth every penny. There are multiple heat settings for avid tea drinkers and even a French Press setting which is perfect for us as we only use a French Press for coffee! The buttons to select the temperature are on the base and the labels are not directly on the buttons which is great, as I'm not worried about them rubbing off. The kettle isn't too loud, I would say normal level. It boils water quickly and the 'keep warm' feature is very handy. The lid is very easy to use with a button to open it softly. At first the lid did not open very smoothly, but after using it a dozen times it worked perfectly. This is a fantastic product (as are all the Breville appliances I own) and I highly recommend it!
- Reviewed in Canada on November 22, 2015Verified PurchaseI like this kettle. It boils water quickly and turns itself off after one minute. My only disappointment is that I live in the country and need to thoroughly boil the water. My last Tfal gave me a temperature reading so I could simply wait for the required temperature (ie. green tea needs a much lower heat) With the Breville I basically have to guess. I think it would be excellent in an urban area, as you can simply touch the button for the perfect temperature for whatever kind of tea you are making. In the city, it would be a tea lovers dream.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 5, 2025Verified PurchaseDo not buy! Over 30 days in and plastic on the top of the lid starts cracking. Contacted Breville for warrenty and they sent me a replacement which doesnt work either- kettle shuts off by itself. Called them again, and the replacement kettle has a different problem where it works for a short time and shuts off before water is even boiled. Contacted Breville AGAIN, and was told no refund is available because its past the 30 days of original purchase and I didn’t purchase it from Breville directly. This entire experience is a nightmare, dont buy or else you’ll spend all your time trying to talk to them instead of going about your business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice looking and heats water perfectly!
Verified PurchaseThis unit is perfect for us as it is easy to handle, looks great and does its job as intended! We looked at other top rated units, but some had the control in the handle which made it larger to grasp. This unit has a manageable handle and is lighter as the controls are in the base. Quickly heats a full tank of water. Upright style takes less counter space than our old kettle type.
Hopefully it will continue to operate as well over the coming years?

5.0 out of 5 stars Tea made in heaven
Verified PurchaseFor tea aficionados, this is a must have. Has individual settings for different kinds of tea. Heats up very quickly, has an easy to view window to see how much water is inside, easy to clean, doesn't leak, and doesn't rust either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Perfect tea, fast boil, variant temps ! A quality product !
Verified PurchaseI did a lot of research and it appears that the Breville Electric Kettle, especially this model, for the cost, was the best on the market. Although some of the reviews here, are giving me pause....especially the one video review where the guy hit the buttons and there is a flicker and then nothing. As far as it lasting a year, I am fine with that...if you use something several times a week, and its a small electric appliance, this type of thing is not going to last forever, but I just want it to last a year and not go on the fritz. It appears to be well made and is solid, it feels heavy and well made, like, expensive. There is nothing ' tinny' about this thing.
I just had my first brew tonight and the water was perfect, the tea was perfect. All was excellent and I do believe that the water temp has a lot do to with making good tea. Although I am a coffee aficionado, I am a tea newbie...but I know what I like. I bought some Twinings Christmas Tea with a pinch of cinnamon, etc. and fired up my new Breville.....a little steeping, a little milk and sweetener...and voila! A perfect cup of delicious tea!
I will be back to update, if I have any of the issues like I am seeing in the video and written reviews...but so far, I am thoroughly enjoying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I use this heavily for many tasks, bought a 2nd one after 1st one failed because I liked it that much
Verified PurchaseI purchased this kettle in December 2009 from 鶹 after owning several other kettles. The other kettles did the job of boiling water but I was tired of using a thermometer for making green tea. I got the Breville Lift And Look toaster as a gift and was impressed with the thoughtfulness of the design, so I included Breville in my search for a new kettle, even though it was pricey (at least three times what I was looking to spend). I wanted something for green tea, coffee (love the keep-warm feature), and for various jobs like making jello, hummingbird food, getting a jump on boiling a pot of pasta water, and filling the dishpan with hot water rather than letting the faucet run and waste water. Even though I initially questioned myself for spending this much, the investment paid off because we utilize all the features and put it to heavy use morning and night. We also like the lighted buttons that are easy for large man-fingers, hideaway cord feature, the fact that the base does not skid on the counter, and the plug with the big hole to easily unplug it with no strain on the power cord. We have no problems with build-up, even after 2-1/2 years, because we use nothing but filtered water in it. (We keep several tap water filtering pitchers on the counter at all times.)
In 2011, I started having intermittent problems with the kettle leaking. Also, the kettle would occasionally keep boiling and not shut off, but this may have been due to water leaking into the electronic base. Upon careful examination, it seemed that the water was coming out from the handle somewhere. I worked around the problem by taking the kettle off the base and setting it on a folded kitchen towel immediately after each use, and unplugging the kettle for safety reasons. The plug's design (big hole for finger in the center) ensures that constant plugging and unplugging doesn't put wear on the power cord, helping to avoid further problems or safety issues. After removing the leaky kettle from the base daily, the electronic problems stopped.
A few days ago, I had a pretty big flood from the kettle and heard a rattle. When I looked inside, I saw that one of the screws holding the handle on had fallen off completely. Time for a new kettle. The less-expensive variable-temp Cuisin*rt PerfecT*mp looks like a nice alternative, but I was concerned about the electronics being up in the handle where I could easily ruin them with water, instead of on a base away from the sink. Since I love this kettle and it does everything I want (and the price has gone down), I decided to re-purchase it. When I looked inside the new kettle, they had redesigned the way the handle is attached... no screws to fail (probably the source of the leak). I am packing the old kettle and base away for a spare in an emergency.
There are less expensive variable-temp kettles out there of good quality and design. However, this one has become my favorite, I have the matching toaster, and I have a spare base now.
UPDATE as of 10-02-2012: So far I've had no problems with my second kettle. I still unplug it daily just in case, and I'm still hanging on to the previous base. I'm a fan, but a cautious fan who puts safety first.
UPDATE as of 01-15-2013: Still no problems.
UPDATE as of 09-04-2013: Still no problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars also good for coffee drinkers
Verified PurchaseMany reviewers have commented on this kettle for tea. I hardly drink tea, but still find it very useful.
I am a fanatical coffee drinker. I prefer to buy freshly roasted coffee from small roasters, store the beans at room temperature in an airtight container, measure the beans with a digital scale, grind the beans before brewing with a conical burr grinder, boil my water to precisely 192 degrees, and brew the coffee in an insulated french press. Well, except when I was making a small amount of coffee with the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker. Then I wanted the water to be 185 degrees. (At this point in the review, I feel it is necessary to remind the reader that I am a FANATICAL coffee drinker.)
Water temperature makes a huge difference in the taste of your coffee. Higher brewing temperatures extract more acidic and astringent compounds. Brewing coffee with boiling water makes it taste more harsh and bitter, brewing with cooler water makes it more mild. Through trial and error, I've found that I prefer my coffee to brew for a long time with moderately hot water. With the coffees I prefer (usually Indonesian and African, roughly full city roast), 192 degrees works best.
I bought this kettle because brewing the water to the right temperature was very frustrating with my old kettle. It would take a great degree of diligence and multiple temperature checks with a digital thermometer to get the water to the right temperature. As promised, this kettle will brew your water to a specific temperature. It has saved me a small amount of time and aggravation every morning.
I have only a few things to criticize about this product:
- There is a button labeled "French Press Coffee" that brews water to 200 degrees. Do not use this setting for french press coffee. Brew the water to 195 degrees instead.
- The kettle resets to 212 degrees (a full boil) if you unplug it. This can be a minor annoyance; more than once, I have accidentally forgotten to reset the temperature and boiled the water.
- I'd really like a 190 degree setting. 195 degrees is a little too hot for some coffees, and 185 is too cold.
- It's tough to get all the water out. A little water tends to get stuck in the lid and filter. If you measure water before boiling (I do, in order to expedite boiling), you may find this annoying.
- The "hold" mode is confusing if you don't read the manual. Once, my wife misread the kettle, and accidentally added lukewarm water to a coffee pot. The kettle indicates that it is done by beeping and changing the color of an LED. I think it would have been better to add an LED light explicitly labeled "at brewing temperature" rather than assigning two purposes to the light around the hold button.
These may be minor quibbles, but this is a very pricey kettle. If you're looking for a well made kettle that brews water to different temperatures, this is probably your best bet. If you don't care about the multiple temperatures, you can find much more economical options that are just as functional.
