Product description
Similar to the breville smart oven, but in a smaller, more compact design, this 1800-watt oven offers exceptional cooking convenience while taking up less space on the counter. The unit's 3/5-cubic-foot nonstick interior can accommodate a 12-inch pizza or four slices of bread at a time, while its push-button and turn-knob control panel makes it easy to program. Turn the control dial to select the function--options include toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, and reheat. The oven's element iq "smart" sensor technology puts the power where it's needed most to ensure energy-efficient operation. For each of the eight pre-set functions, element iq automatically adjusts the power and calculates the cooking time. The time and temperature for the pre-set programs can also be manually adjusted to accommodate individual preferences--the oven will even remember the new settings for next time. Use the second control dial for setting the time (from one minute up to two hours) and for adjusting the temperature (from 120 to 450 degrees f), as well as for selecting the number of slices and for setting the toast shade, from light to dark. The control panel also offers a large start/cancel button, a defrost button for frozen foods, and a temperature-conversion button for recipes with cooking temperatures in celsius. The oven's easy-to-read backlit lcd screen shows the current function, temperature, and adjustments made--plus it illuminates orange to indicate preheating and cooking, then blue to indicate the end of the cooking cycle. Other highlights include a tempered-glass door, three rack positions, and a front-access removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Accessories include a 10-by-10-inch enamel baking pan and a 10-by-10-inch enamel broil rack. Attractively housed in coated steel with a strikingly modern design, the countertop oven measures 16-1/2 by 14-1/4 by 10 inches.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2014Verified PurchaseI've been debating over which brand and model of Toaster Oven to purchase for quite some time and I settled on the Breville Compact which I am totally pleased with, for various reasons.
- I don't have a lot of counter space and I liked the idea of the cutting board which fits very nicely on the top.
- I liked the look and colour of it and it seems at home under the corner cabinet in my kitchen which enables me to pull it forward when in use.
- I wanted one that I can increase the cooking time for, if needed, without having to wait to the minutes to run out.
- The settings are simple to operate and the front pull-out crumb tray is convenient to empty.
- it makes great toast.
As far as the temperature, I've used it almost every day and have cooked several casseroles, impossible pies, fries and baked potatoes and made broiled sandwiches and so far, unlike others I notice absolutely nothing untoward....infact it roasts or bakes far quicker than my oven especially considering that it preheats in a matter of a couple minutes. If a recipe tells me to bake something for 25 minutes and my Breville does so in 25 minutes, then what the actual temp reading is for the entire period of that 25 minutes is not an issue to me.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 17, 2019Verified PurchaseGreat toaster oven. This is my third one. Gets a lot of use in my house. Features work well. ie: broiler and toast features.
It looks great, not too big, not to small. Does Pizza very well. Heats up to temp. fast.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 25, 2016Verified PurchasePurchased this toaster when I moved to my first place. Fits perfectly when counterpace is a concern - otherwise I would have purchased the bigger brother. Have used it primary to bake/toast things, and it does the job well. I know that some reviewers (on amazon.com, for example) have actually tested temperature on these units and had some issues with consistent performance. While this may be true, I haven't noticed much difference between results when cooking the same foods. It gets the job done, it looks pretty nice, but when you get cheese or something on the elements, it can be tough to clean. Because of oil stains from the stove, I have to use a stainless steel cleaner to give it a nice smooth finish. The tray which slides out for easy cleaning is convenient, but has sharp edges.
I haven't really experimented with every cooking setting, except for bake, broil and toast. I can say that those work well and if you've used breville in the past this is consistent with their other products. Overall, I'm happy. I just wish they'd sell their products for less in Canada!
- Reviewed in Canada on January 23, 2014Verified PurchaseThis has been a great investment. My wife and I have no children so I cook for two. I now use this oven to do most of the cooking in. It is simple to use, takes up little counter space and looks good on the counter. I bought the bamboo cutting board and the pizza tray. This oven bakes a great pizza, perfect size for two people. I like the cutting board to convert the top of the oven into a storage area. You don't need the cutting board but I do recommend the pizza tray. I like the oven so much I bought the same package for my Mom. She loves it.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 11, 2018Verified PurchaseThe best toaster oven I've ever had. It has a display that lights up with clear & concise big numbers. The knobs feel sturdy. It definitely is a smart oven, as I've been able to use it to toast, roast, broil, bake, reheat (esp pizzas)! Very uniform heating - my toasts are only one shade of brown throughout, which I've never had before. It's definitely worth the price, as I expect to use this oven for years and years to come.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 30, 2013Verified PurchaseWe had it for 2 weeks now. The toast comes out perfect, I cooked a casserole also. The 12" pizza was great - the crust was crispy and it was very easy to clean the oven since some of the cheese melted all over it. I had to slightly increase the baking time for apple pie but it came out the same as when baked in the big oven. It is quiet when in use, very simple to operate. So far it is doing very good job. Would highly recommend!
- Reviewed in Canada on June 24, 2019Verified PurchaseEasy to use and (generally) easy to clean. Three small quibbles: the spring on the door is very strong and can catch you unawares by closing as you are taking something out; a small light inside would be useful (I use a flashlight!); and the roasting / grilling pan cannot go in the dishwasher and its enamel seems to have an attraction for grease that resists repeated washings. But an excellent buy overall.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2025Verified PurchaseI've owned this toaster oven for 7 years and never had any issues with it. The heat isn't super even anymore but otherwise I love it. It's also easy to clean and still looks good.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this oven!
Verified PurchaseUpon learning the negative health effects of microwave ovens, we decided to get rid of ours and hoped that this Breville would take up all the functions of our microwave. We've been using it for a year now daily, and have been delighted with its quality and function! It seems these days that many small appliances are built to break down and need replacing, and that was true of our last counter top oven. But I researched deeply and am so glad I tried out this brand as it lives up to its claims to be a great small oven! We mostly use it to: toast bread daily, heat up leftovers, melt cheese, cook smaller meals (roasting and baking work great!). The oven itself is (refreshingly) high quality stainless steel, as is the pan and broiler pan that fit in the oven. I use the main pan every day, and it still cleans easily with mild soaking. I find the functions of the oven easy to navigate. My husband and I are of retirement age, this oven is the perfect size for our needs. I often will roast a large amount of vegetables and meats in the oven once a week, and/or stir fry or boil on the stove, then use this oven daily to reheat for each meal. When I want to cook for one or two meals, this oven is perfect to use instead of the big oven. The crumb tray is stainless, doesn't stain, and is easy to clean. This oven cost more than other ovens but is well worth the price. I hope the company keeps up the quality of this product for years to come. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars My wife really likes this Breville Compact Smart Oven.
Verified PurchaseUPDATE : Nearly two years old and used every single day and we are just as pleased as the day it first arrived. There are some reviews which claim it wouldn't last 6 months or a year, well the Breville unit we received is rapidly approaching its second birthday.
Actually, with this unit, we use our regular oven less and less. I like the way this unit cooks but I really like the way it reheats food. Where a Microwave will warm food much faster, it also tends to make some meats "rubbery". Not the Breville toaster oven, it warms the food through uniformly and doesn't "change it" the microwaves can. This oven is also very good for crisping things like french fries, breads, etc. Whether its as simple as heating up my wife's daily raspberry Pop tarts or baking cookies or making bread, this oven has done it all. Very good for pizza's as well........
We have cooked a wide range of items in this oven and it's used at least once everyday. Does my two years of use change my rating of this unit? No, I still rate it very highly and we are very happy with this toaster oven. We have even bought others this same toaster oven as a gift and they have indicated they are pleased with it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ordered this as a surprise for my wife. Her last toaster oven recently went to the appliance yard in the sky and she had mentioned that she wanted another toaster oven, but not a cheapie that are sold at the local stores.
After research, I found this Breville Compact Smart Oven and ordered it as a surprise for my wife. Imagine her surprise when it arrived, only to be immediately followed by disappointment that there was damage to the shipping box and it transferred to damage to the oven right in the center of the rear and top of the oven. I contacted 鶹 immediately and they shipped a replacement which we had in just a few days. I returned the damaged oven the same day i received it. The return process couldn't have been easier.
My wife is very pleased with this oven's consistency and it's ease of use. It's also a very good looking appliance. We were in Best Buy recently and they had the same oven at a price $90 higher than what I paid 鶹.
Check out the plug on the cord, another indication that Breville is paying attention to how their product is actually used. Impressive.
The oven is well made, is an attractive appliance and has the look, feel and function of a quality appliance. We have now used it for about a month and my wife uses it now instead of the big oven for many meals. This is one of those purchases which I looked forward to receiving and am now glad I spent the money. This is heads and shoulders above a Black and Decker or other similar low price point toaster oven. The size is also perfect to be left out on the counter in the corner where my wife wanted it kept.
If I could, I would give this 6 stars. Well, in a way, I guess I can *.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Toast
Verified PurchaseHave owned the 650XL for 9 months now and can recommend it highly -- high quality product and in my opinion well worth the high price. Everything is robustly built with one exception -- the two knobs on front panel are plastic and a bit flimsy compared to the solid overall construction -- not a problem per se, just inconsistent with the overall quality.
Does indeed do a great job on toast, bagels, muffins but it would be hard to justify the cost if that's all you use it for. We've found it to be an "80/20" substitute (and MUCH faster, presumably more energy efficient) vs. using the stove oven -- anything that physically fits we now do in the Breville -- the "smart" features, somewhat to my surprise, work extremely well -- I have rarely had to adjust the settings to compensate for the preprogramming.
A big part of what we use the Breville for is pizza -- it can handle all but the largest frozen pizzas (up to 12"). One tip I can offer is to start the pizza on the Breville non-stick pizza tray and let it bake for about 5 minutes until cheese melts. It is then easy to slip the pizza off the round tray onto the wire rack -- this ensures that you don't get shredded cheese pieces on the heating elements but also gives you a nice crisp crust.
It is true that the wire racks come all the way out without a stop or ridge to warn you, so we have learned to be careful about this -- on the other hand we've turned it to an advantage by slipping the wire rack with food all the way out and allowing, for example, pizza to cool off for a minute right on the wire rack, which we put on a heat-safe surface.
The unit overall does throw off a fair amount of heat, so leaving adequate space at sides and back is a consideration. One nice feature is that the handle has the effect of propping the door up level with the bottom of the oven opening when the door is open -- no reliance on hinges to support the open door and a good backup for those times when you unintentionally pull a wire rack all the way out.
Make sure you check electrical service for the circuit you'll be plugging into -- both Breville ovens are high wattage devices and you may have blown fuses if you run your oven, the coffee maker, and something else all at once off the same outlet.
We also had one amusing defect -- I thought the LCD display had a very slight flaw until I looked closely and found that it was actually a tiny gnat that apparently got trapped in one of the LCD display layers (a few thousand years from now, some archaeologist will probably value this perfectly preserved specimen from the 21st century).
Quick Update -- after 18 months with almost daily use -- this oven is still running in like-new fashion, no problems/no defects... we finally wore down the non-stick on the pizza tray accessory but that's about it (and new pizza trays were readily available on 鶹).
