Product description

Bosch Hex Shank Hammer Drill Masonry Bits deliver 4X life vs. standard masonry bits, and have been redesigned with hex shanks for use in hammer drills and impact drivers. These bits feature asymmetric diamond-ground carbide tips, which deliver fast drilling and longer bit life in hammer drills and impact drivers. The tips are designed for precise starts and less bit walking. The bit heads are manufactured with exclusive Bosch-made carbide. They have milled U-flutes with deep-cut spirals for fast drilling in block, masonry and concrete. The hex shank provides aggressive gripping power.

    Bought to try drilling holes in concrete with my dewalt impact driver, I have a proper SDS but wanted to see how the impact would fare. When drilling cured concrete full of aggregate, it does work, just not all that fast. Going slow and using water helps a little, but has a hard time with rock. Would be much more suited to brick, tile, or other masonry. Limited by the 1/4" hex shank as anything with more torque would snap the shank, but a good option for softer materials or if you only need a couple holes in a tight space. A good backup option or something to keep in the toolbag.

    The whole bit measures 6 inches, not the usable part.. so if you need a 6 in deep hole, hope you have an extender for your drill. Other than that, works well, used it to drill 20 holes in my foundation to attach a ledger board for a deck.

You do have to be careful to not drill too fast so you don't create much heat, and also drill at an angle.

    I needed to drill a 1/2 in by 5 in hole in some concrete, for an anchor. I have a couple of regular drills, an impact driver, and a hammer drill. Because this has the 1/4 shank that looks like it fits an impact driver, I thought I'd give it a shot first.... It's not the fault of the drill bit that the impact driver didn't perform well, but the purpose of the 1/4 shank is lost if an impact driver isn't appropriate for the task. I knew that the "regular" drills would be a waste of time... which is why I bought the hammer drill.

    I was concerned about using the hammer drill with this bit. Other 1/2 bits that resemble this one, shred when they're put between the hammer drill and concrete. The other bits are only useable for a couple of inches before the stress causes them to fail. This bit performed very well.... and produced a very nice hole. Upon examination, it appears the "teeth" have suffered very little (if any) damage and will live in my tool box until the next time I need such a hole.
