- Reviewed in Canada on May 4, 2025Verified PurchaseI bought these reading comprehension activities to help my child get ready for **Grade 1**, and they exceeded my expectations! Over the summer, she worked through the exercises, which covered key reading skills like understanding stories, answering questions, and recognizing important details.
The activities were engaging and well-structured, with a good mix of fun exercises, short passages, and thoughtful questions** that helped build her confidence. By the time school started, she was ahead of her class, reading more fluently and understanding texts more deeply!
I especially loved how the book provided progressive challenges—starting with simple reading tasks and gradually increasing in difficulty. It encouraged critical thinking and helped her learn how to find answers within the text
If you’re looking for a great resource to support early reading skills and give your child a strong foundation before Grade 1, this is an excellent choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Our favorite
Verified PurchaseWe have a lot of workbooks and this one is our favorite non-math workbook. Our 5 year old was working on some of the Brainquest books (he loves the summer ones cause they have stickers and a map :). But the reading comprehension activities for 2nd to 3rd grade were over his head (not surprisingly), and he usually struggled through the comprehension activities even in books 1st-2nd grade, although he can read quite well.
This one is perfect. He can do the activities in a reasonable time, however what we like the most about these is that they build the skills and have great topics! They introduce kids to all sorts of awesome topics (history, science, health, arts, etc.) in a very age appropriate way, and they are not too long! It keeps his attention while he reads it out to us. He started working on these a year ago, and we have finished the 2nd grade book now. These books are great! We have the 3rd grade, and it looks good (but it's way too soon for him to do, although he wants it :0).
What I like a lot is that It gets your child to think in a different way. It really challenges them to think more critically. I like that it is not all multiple choice (a lot of comprehension books have the same type of questions - usually multiple choice - over and over). These are more creative. I feel she really put in the effort and really thought through what the goal is for the child. They get progressively harder, but not impossible.
My son enjoys these. The book is in color (which is not always the case!) and I think that helps to make it more engaging for children. It is also of high quality - nice paper quality and none of the pages fall out after every day use.
I think these are great to use along with other books and workbooks. It will set your child on a great path being able to read and comprehend what they read. They will be able to express the important ideas and what they think about those ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The result was visible
Verified PurchaseI bought it for my son after we moved to the UK when he was 6 yo so he could understand what he was learning at school. I found he hugely improved his reading skills where, for example, his teacher now says he will catch up with other students(of course this book is not the single factor but exert a big impact).
It covers vocabulary they learn not only in reading class but also in science class. It also covers the differences between fiction and nonfiction, and different types of paragraphs(cause/effect, comparison, sequence...etc). Note it's written in American English. Great book. huge thanks to the author
