It has to be in real sunlight, towards south east or south, and at least 3.3 feet from the ground but not more than 6.5 feet. No trees or plants should be in the front of the openings. Don't hang it from a tree branch since it has to be firmly anchored so it doesn't move in the wind. It's made to give the ideal bee habitat. These are a variation on paper drinking straws. These straws are sized specifically as a nesting home for Mason Bee cocoons. They are sold as being a recycled paper product and are brown coloured. I have mixed them in the wooden house that contains about 100 straws with a white paper drinking straw and the bees are inhabiting both types of straws seemingly happily. I crimped the end of the straws opposite the entrance end to simulate a burrow -like environment on the suggestion of another bee keeper. Mason Bees are a pollinator only, no honey. They do need moisture and mud to seal off the tubes to protect the cocoons but otherwise are not aggressive , or even very noticeable.
I really love these straws for the mason bees. While I was able to make many inserts with parchment paper, I'd love to see this company make some & sell them as well! Also this is the perfect length for female mason bees to get some good viable female eggs layed in the back. I will be buying again!
If your the distributor I would recommend a combo pack with insert straws. I’d rather separate the insert straws to harvest the mason bee cocoons. Other then that take some printer paper cut in 2.5 “ strips and roll them for inserts.
These tubes are open at both ends. Mason bees need to have one end closed or they are much less likely to accept the tubes. So I'm stuck taping them up on one end one by one. Also, these tubes hardly soften or unravel when soaked in water. To get the cocoons out at the end of the year is difficult compared to other tubes I have had. Would not buy again.
