The #1 New York Times Bestseller!

This extraordinary true story, read by the author, is the basis for the Academy Award winning film
BlacKkKlansman, written and directed by Spike Lee, produced by Jordan Peele, and starring John David Washington and Adam Driver.

When detective Ron Stallworth, the first black detective in the history of the Colorado Springs Police Department, comes across a classified ad in the local paper asking for all those interested in joining the Ku Klux Klan to contact a P.O. box, Detective Stallworth does his job and responds with interest, using his real name while posing as a white man. He figures he’ll receive a few brochures in the mail, maybe even a magazine, and learn more about a growing terrorist threat in his community.

A few weeks later the office phone rings, and the caller asks Ron a question he thought he’d never have to answer, “Would you like to join our
cause?” This is 1978, and the KKK is on the rise in the United States. Its Grand Wizard, David Duke, has made a name for himself, appearing on talk shows, and major magazine interviews preaching a “kinder” Klan that wants nothing more than to preserve a heritage, and to restore a nation to its former glory.

Ron answers the caller’s question that night with a yes, launching what is surely one of the most audacious, and incredible undercover investigations in history. Ron recruits his partner Chuck to play the "white" Ron Stallworth, while Stallworth himself conducts all subsequent phone conversations. During the months-long investigation, Stallworth sabotages cross burnings, exposes white supremacists in the military, and even befriends David Duke himself.

Black Klansman is an amazing true story that unfolds like a crime thriller, and a searing portrait of a divided America and the extraordinary heroes who dare to fight back.

Sadly this book seems to be placed in history, during a different time period, but it actually feels just as easy to have been placed during our time period. Interesting story, sad that there is such hatred in the world. But a good reminder there are good people fighting for love and equality.

Having seen the Spike Lee movie version I wanted to read Ron Stallworth’s intriguing and ironic story. That he was capable of carrying out a sting on the KKK is an amazing tale. This occurred while he was quite new to the department and the first black officer on the Colorado Police Force in 1978. It is an extraordinary tale of deception and the infiltration of the local KKK who were attempting to recruit new members and to install fear by inept plans to burn crosses in the town.

This is told in a straightforward manner as Stallworth recalls the events that led to the exposure of white supremacists in the military and even as high up as in NORAD, sabotaging cross burnings and befriending the Grand Wizard himself, David Duke, by phone. Other cities were alerted to upcoming plans by the KKK in their vicinities. The local KKK encountered in Colorado Springs did not appear to be very bright and so anxious to receive new members that they were readily deceived.

When necessary to appear in person at the local KKK rallies, he recruits a white fellow detective, Chuck. So Detective Stallworth and partner Chuck work in unison, Stallworth on the phone and Chuck attending meetings when it was necessary to be seen in person. The partnership was so successful that Stallworth/Chuck were selected to become next head of the local organization. I found Stallworth’s phone conversations with Duke humorous. Duke accepted and respected Stallworth as a white bigot at the same time claiming he could always identify a black man’s speech patterns.

The movie version was more disturbing and powerful. Most of the events followed closely Ron Stallworth’s recollections, but added some documentary clips, photos and excerpts from movies at the beginning. Emphasized were past unflattering stereotypes of African Americans and depicting the KKK as heroic freedom riders in the 1915 movie Birth of a Nation.

Spike Lee’s film concluded by showing some recent TV clips from 2017 Charlottesville riots where a white supremacist rally turned violent. Stallworth mentions this in his book, but the film clips paint a more visceral picture about how racism still exists and rears its ugly head. The movie version also added some fictional events for dramatic effect. When the police department shut down its investigation of the KKK it shows a hilarious phone call by Stallworth to David Duke exposing how Duke was duped and humiliated by a Black officer. It also shows a police takedown of local KKK members which never happened. Both the book and movie compare the KKK’s wish to place armed members all along the Mexican border to keep out illegal immigrants to Trump’s promise of a wall.

I thought Black Klansman worked well as a memoir, and the movie also worked well in a different format.

It was as if I was beside Ron all the while. Seeing(hearing) what is still going on in the US even today makes me wonder do people learn. I doubt. That may be a very negative view to take. But, it is happening here in India as well in a different way. Why only India all over the world probably. Next stop is to rent the movie and watch it.

Blackkklansman was my favourite film of 2018 and I was determined to read the book on which it was based. Rarely is a film equal to the book on which it is based, as this was. Ron Stallworth's KKK adventures are a hilarious read but he never fails to acknowledge the disturbing ramifications of such an organization still present in today's America. Of most interest is the idea that the media would give them a platform thus elevating them to a higher standing than they would otherwise.
This book helps to shift this and reveal them to be the buffoons they really are

Had seen the film which seemed to treat the story in a light hearted way and I wanted to read the book to find out what the actual reality was. The book was easy to read and the film follows the majority of the book. There is also the feeling that those involved found it amusing that a black man was fooling the Klu Klux Klan. However, there are serious issued discussed and highlighted and the way that black people were treated and perhaps with some of the recent events leading to the 'Black People Matter' group things still need to change.
