wonderful resource - I'm a doula and this lives in my birth bag. Great for partners, doulas, or other family/friends who want to support their birthing people.

A most solid book. If you are a snowflake who can't handle terms like "birthing person" and "chest feeding", go find editions 1-3. But if you are looking for a gender neutral guide that is inclusive of all families and arrangements, this book is amazing. It has solid information and will help you, as a birth partner, be there for the birthing person more than any other guide I've read.

Doula student here, another great invaluable resource. It covers how the birthing mama feels, what the the birth partner can do, what a doctor or midwife will do and what a doula will offer. An incredible resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Supporting Birth...Disappointing Updates
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2025

This is the standard book of being a support person at a birth. Whether you are the husband, father, mother, sister, friend, or doula...read this book. However the updated version was disappointing in the removal of the words that define pregnancy. The book avoids saying women, mother, and breast. That is disappointing from a book claiming to understand the natural process of childbirth so well. It is also clunky to read honestly. It sounds so forced and strange. So definitely read this book, but fair warning about the language.

Great book. Read it in the weeks leading up to your first birth. Well written and extremely informative. Felt more ready for the big day because of this one. Suprising quick read. Many skimmable sections.
