Better Apart: The Radically Positive Way to Separate
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
Marital strife and divorce can be your chance to profoundly transform yourself, your mindset, and your relationship with a more harmonious and steady vision.
While many of us may be better together, some of us can actually become better apart.
What if you emerged from your divorce stronger and more resilient than ever before? Better Apart is the first book to apply the life-changing, healing wisdom of meditation and yoga, combined with practical advice, to help anyone going through the painful and seemingly intractable realities of divorce.
Gabrielle Hartley and Elena Brower are warm and caring guides who can help you compassionately part from your partner. Whether your separation is amicable, or your ex is combative, Better Apart can help you find peace, calm, and hope. Blending practical advice from a legal perspective together with spiritual wisdom, Gabrielle and Elena are experts and realists who have created a simple five-step process that uses original meditations, perspective-shifting exercises, and fresh suggestions to help navigate the common legal and emotional pitfalls of divorce. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried yoga or mediation; Gabrielle’s insight buttressed by Elena’s practices and exercises are accessible for all. Together, they show you how to meaningfully shift your mindset and to move forward though any - or all - parts of this emotionally fraught process.
Better Apart radically reframes the way couples experience, execute, and recover from when “for better or worse” is no longer an option, and helps you find the road to a new mindset and better life.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2020I love love love this book so much. I met Gabrielle at the tail end of my divorce so I wasn't able to put her techniques in place at the beginning, which I would have loved. But I still put them in place and my divorce came through smoothly, we have learned to be in a better place together, as separate people and parents for our kids. I do believe that it all started with me and my mindset, and how I was setting myself up for failure or success. My divorce wasn't smooth because my marriage wasn't smooth. We were in a toxic relationship from the beginning, for 18 years. It was never easy, and my feelings of needing to be seen and heard and treated like I mattered (which aren't bad things to want at all), spiralled into my ego and things I could not "allow" to continue. Once I read this book and started to put my ego behind what was the highest good for everyone involved and not just myself, things started to come together. I was able to sleep, eat properly, and focus. Stay on my game. Not let the trips to the courthouse rule my world. My anxiety was in check. I could calm myself down and breathe. What I would have loved would have been to have found her book at the beginning because so much of what had happened was me shutting down out of pure frustration, which made things so much worse for myself. Please read this book, and be open, be coachable and remember to course correct when you need to: if your emotions are super charged or your feel defensive, you're putting your ego first and you don't want to do that. Meditate and ask for the answers to what is in the best interest of everyone - what is the greatest good? You'll come to the answers and I can promise you that you'll lean more toward love for having read this book, and it will make your divorce and your life (and your future) so much more freeing. Lastly, I have to say that even if you're dealing with someone who is toxic, has personality disorders or mental health issues, there is a way to learn how to deal with them. This book will get you there. So if you're reading this and you're thinking "this book just can't help me or my situation", give it a go and see if you feel the same way after you learn some new skills around mindset, how you can calm the situation down, and be in control of your life. Best of luck! xo

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Advice Applicable to Many of Life's Challenges-- Not Just Marriage
Verified PurchaseThis book was recommended to me by a friend and I flew through it finding it to be an absolute revelation. I'm happily married, and for the most part have healthy relationships with family and friends, but I found that the advice and approach discussed in this book can and should be applied to MANY of life's challenging situations and relationships. "Better Apart" is not just for people in unhappy marriages who might be considering divorce. The idea is to push re-set on your own life and your own journey, and to come out with a better mindset and a fresh set of expectations to deal with conflict peacefully and "elegantly." Elegance is in such short supply in our modern world, I love how the authors apply it to divorce and separation. The five key elements: 1. Patience, 2. Respect, 3. Clarity, 4. Peace and 5. Forgiveness are beautiful, positive and forward looking. I have not done much yoga or meditation, but I can see how both of these practices would be helpful. Its always useful to take a deep breath, look within and find calm within the storms of life. The book offers a new approach that can take away some of the inner struggle and stigma people may face when ending difficult relationships. At the end of the day, I believe we all truly want to find peacefulness, clarity and hope for a better future. I can't imagine a better message or one that is more applicable to modern relationships, not just marriage. Well written with a spectacular message. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Practical For Any Relationship
Verified PurchaseI found the authors' approach to handling divorce to be clear and logical, yet calming and uplifting. I believe that there are elements of this book that are helpful for navigating any relationship. While reading Better Apart, I spent a lot of time reflecting on how I have handled my current and previous relationships, and have gained key insights. I've never been married, but I expect my current long-term relationship will benefit greatly from this. Gabrielle Hartley demonstrates a keen mind, that is kind and insightful, yet confident and decisive. Elena Brower is a role model for people who want common sense and the "big picture" to win out over impulsive and emotional decision-making. Both of these women speak from great experience and devotion to their clients, and to the well-being of their own families and selves. Thank you to the authors for this excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vitally important information
Verified PurchaseBetter Apart is must-read if you are contemplating a divorce or separation, or if you are a divorce attorney like me. It should be a textbook in schools. That is how vitally important Attorney Hartley's concepts are to society at large. Her co-author, Elena Brower, is a world-renowned yoga instructor and spiritual guide. Her teachings, both on and off the mat, have inspired many to go on their own spiritual journey, including me. The collaboration between these two women, a very yin-yang partnership, bringing pragmatic legal concepts, processes and procedures together with physical and spiritual tactics on how to handle such an emotional journey is simply priceless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Apart is one of the BETTER divorce books
Verified PurchaseAs a divorce coach and author myself, I found Better Apart to be one of the better books on the subject. I could appreciate the author's mixing yoga in to use as a means of seeking clarity and calmness throughout this challenging process. What a unique idea! While I did not agree personally with many of the viewpoints, I understood the author's opinions and found her to be smart and the book to be extremely useful. I wish I had a book such as this when I was going through my divorce. Excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Relatable and helpful
Verified PurchaseEven though I am not a yogi and am happily married, I read this book to be able to support someone close to me in this situation. I found Better Apart totally relatable, helpful and even kind of "fun" to read. In addition to lots of thoughtful practical advice, Better Apart takes a deep look at how we can re-focus on situations so that how we see them serve us better. Definitely will share with anyone I know going through separation or divorce. Highly recommend.
