    As an orchestral player (violinist, violist) and student conductor who is currently in a performance cycle of Symphony No. 3 "Organ", I think that this is one of the best recordings I have heard of the symphony. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for great balances and a full sound of an orchestra!

    This was my first Saint-Saëns CD, and I did not quite know what to expect. It was love at first hear(?!). An excellent collection, ranging from the humorous "Carnival of the Animals" to the serious Organ Symphony. If you are not familiar with Saint-Saëns, I would strongly recommend this collection as a great introduction.

    I had heard the Carnival of Animals and wanted a copy, so I ordered this. Unfortunately, it has split it up randomly on both CDs, so it doesn't flow. It also lacks the poetry thatshould precerd each piece, so not quite what I'd expected. The sound quality is fine, but i feel somewhat shortchanged.....

    The 3rd Symphony by Edo De Waart / Daniel Chorzempa (organ) /Rotterdam PO alone is enough to justify the purchase. The performance, recorded in 1972, is rich, deep, touching, convincing and can be rated, with full rights, among the best recorded interpretations.

    In the Violin Concerto No. 3 and in the Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso (both recorded in 1969), Henryk Szeryng (accompanied by an inspired Van Remoortel conducting the Orchestre National de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo) draws out two very fine and elegant, well balanced, but warm, interpretations.

    Bella Davidovich (with Neeme Järvi conducting the wonderful Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1981) comes out with a clear, sharp and fully mastered Piano Concerto No. 2; maybe here we do not get the same richness of colours of the Gilels / Cluytens EMI edition (Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No 3 / Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto No 2 (Great Recordings of the Century)), but the sound of this edition is brighter and better recorded.

    Michele Campanella and Aldo Ceccato, conducting the Orchestre National de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo in 1970, propose a well played, attentively reasoned and interesting Piano Concerto No. 4.

    Herman Krebbers, Bernard Haitink and RCO perform an intriguing Danse Macabre (1962).

    Le Carnaval des Animaux is assigned to André Previn and to his Pittsburgh SO (with Anne Martindale Williams at the cello in Le Cygne and Joseph Villa & Patricia Prattis Jennings at the piano, 1980): the interpretation is excellent, maybe not legendary.
    Le Cygne (only) is repeated in the 1960 Gendron / Gallion's, this time legendary, interpretation.

    On the whole, the variety of the (all top level) performers and the range (1960-1981) of the recording dates are well suited for an anthological project and add colours and thickness to this compilation.
    The quality of the sound is generally very good, but obviously can not be homogeneous.

    In conclusion, here you will find stuff enough for two very nice sessions of a Saint-Saens' full immersion!
