- Reviewed in Canada on November 29, 2024I took this a few days ago after waking up with a slight sore throat, cough, running nose. I wasn't sure if this was the onset of a cold, but I took one dose.
There are no cold cures, so I am *** NOT ***claiming this prevented me from getting a cold or that it cured whatever I felt I was coming down with. I can say that my sore throat was quickly soothed but not completely relieved, and my cough was suppressed for a few hours. I did not need a second dose as my sore throat dissipated through the morning. I developed a persistent cough from exposure to mould in the 1990s, so it can be hard to tell the difference between a persistent cough and a cough due to illness.
I like that this product contains a spoon with a measurement line. When the spoon is overfilled beyond the line, it is shaped so that the excess can be returned to the bottle without spilling. The spoon has a flat bottom, so it is oddly shaped for taking the syrup.
While the medicinal ingredient is listed as South African Geranium (Pelargonium sidoides - root) extract, the taste reminded me of echinacea tinctures. I recognize that medical publications state that there is no good scientific evidence to support the various uses that native populations of South Africa use this for. However, the National Library of Medicine does acknowledge at least one positive review on the use of Pelargonium sidoides, and comments that it was a well conducted review, and the author's conclusion is likely to be reliable. I conclude there is at least anecdotal evidence that supports the claims made by Benylin.
The bottom line is that within 10 minutes or so after taking this Multi-Symptom Herbal syrup, I did start experiencing some relief in my symptoms that may have been related to environmental allergies. I am giving this a five-star review based on price and efficacy in the claim of symptom relief.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 13, 2025It's certainly not a cure, but sometimes just a little bit of relief can feel worth it. I suppose this is going to be subjective and vary from person to person. I never find the taste of any syrup to be pleasant, so that hasn't really changed in this case. Which I am OK with, as it's too be expected. It's probably best it doesn't taste amazing anyways, as it's not a soft drink. I'd say if your symptoms are mild but annoying, this may help you get comfortable. If you have significant symptoms, whether the improvement is worthwhile or not I think is subjective.
Likes:
- When you need it, it can offer a bit of temporary relief.
- Covers multiple symptoms.
- Convenient size, can pack it up if you need to be mobile.
Dislikes:
- Tastes about as satisfying as any other syrup.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2024I have not caught a cold or flu, so I cannot share my experience with this item, and I did not taste it either as this is a medicinal product, I don't want to use it when not needed, and I think taste is not the main thing you should be considering for such products.
What I would like to share, however, is that it has a different main ingredient from my regular Benylin Extra Strength. The extra strength version came in a very thick, almost glass-like, plastic bottle and had guaifenesin as cough suppressant and menthol as decongestant. This one has South African Geranium as the main ingredient. As other similar products, you should consider it for relieving your symptoms, but they also claim that it helps with the recovery time.
You can check the NPN (Natural Product Number) page to see that its license is rather new, started in January 2024 and revised in revised quite recently in October 2024.
Note that the risk information has some serious warnings for liver issues:

Reviewed in Canada on February 2, 2025Verified PurchaseQui plus est, je crois que le liquide tellement froid a sa livraison,
avait l'air d'avoir surgelé.
Fait bizare: c'est le seul produit de Benylin qui peut être livré a mon adresse.
Tous les autres syrops ne le peuvent...
- Reviewed in Canada on November 21, 2024The Benylin Multi-Symptom Herbal Syrup is quite liquid, not as thick as most cough syrups so it’s easy to spill. It also had an odd taste, but that’s okay, a drink of water takes care of that.
Benylin is a brand I trust and it was the first time I’ve seen an herbal product from them. It was a nice surprise.
DOSING SPOON FAILURE
It has a dosing spoon included in the package which is quite large but very shallow. There is a marking on the spoon, but I find the whole thing ridiculous with the spoon being so shallow – it makes difficult to be accurate. Also, it’s easy to spill it because it’s just about at the top of that shallow spoon. And finally, it is awkward to dose yourself: To hold the spoon, fill to that high line, then turn that shallow spoon toward you to put it in your mouth. What is wrong with one of those little cups we usually get? Or a smaller but deeper spoon? Would that be a problem for the box? Something better has to be figured out.
In spite of that spoon, I found it worked as expected and I can definitely recommend it.
