Brilliant audio interface
This was very much a plug and play device. I was looking for something that would go from my cassette deck into my laptop so I could dub off my cassettes before they become completely unplayable. I have Windows 10. My laptop isn't that new so I needed to install Voicemeeter to help record into Protools. The Bebringer worked perfectly with those programs! The sound quality is amazing! Plus it's light, small size doesn't take up any room and is easy to pack up with my laptop.

This is a bare-bones, USB, audio interface with analogue inputs and outputs - and it works just fine as one. I appreciate that Behringer chose to use female RCA jacks rather than fiddly 1/8th-inch stereo ins and outs. The addition of an additional digital optical output is a nice feature, as is the dedicated headphone volume control knob (rather than needing to tweak phones volume in software). The option to monitor either input or output through the headphones is another useful feature sometimes lacking on low-cost audio interfaces. Setup is simple - this truly is USB plug and play. Audio quality is fine - maybe not what discerning ears would want for "pro" audio mixing, but professional audio producers wouldn't be using an interface at this price point. It's also super-small, super lightweight, and needs no external power beyond USB connection to a computer - so it's perfect for travel.

The only drawbacks are that it does not have any microphone pre-amps - you'd need to spend more on an interface for those, and that's not what this item is meant for - and the accompanying software bundle is outdated and severely lacking in documentation. However, you don't need any of it to use the unit straight out of the box - it's all add-ons for audio production. There's no digital audio input either, but again - that's not what this is for. Overall, this is a simple-to-use, effective, and cheap digital audio interface, from a well-known and trusted brand.

I needed a reliable audio connection from our sound board to a laptop for our live stream, running Streamlabs-OBS. This little guy did the trick; very easy to use and to set up, good quality audio for our purposes, no drop-outs, no latency, no hiss or noise, and with the all-important option to plug in head phones for direct monitoring. A basic and elegant solution.

This is the LONG story of an innocent consumer who dared to trust the word "Behringer" and who was searching for a low latency audio interface. As a retiree, I do a lot of online musical jamming with distant friends on Jamulus and Sonobus. The central limiting issue for online jamming is latency, the time delay between oneself and the friend one is making music with. This is not really a problem in (small) Europe, but is a huge issue in the massive North America. Much of the latency is unavoidable due to the distances and consequent large numbers of servers involved. HOWEVER, part of the latency is also induced by the digital devices one uses. Part of that is certainly any delay within the computer itself, but a key amount comes from whatever AUDIO INTERFACE one uses. That interface latency can be the equivalent of hundreds of miles of distance. One has to find an affordable low latency interface.

鶹 showed the Behringer U-Control UCA-222 as being a very affordable ULTRA low latency audio interface. Since I had been using an interface with at least 26 milliseconds (ms), I really needed an interface with "a name" and very low latency. Behringer's own website listed this as a very low latency device. It is a bare bones device with no fancy amplifiers or mixing functions. This was fine, because I have a great mixer to feed it with sound signals. I just needed the bare bones interface, but it HAD TO have low latency.

When the little red device arrived [my first mistake], I realised that there was no ASIO (audio stream input/output) driver for it. Not to worry, I'll just go to the Behringer website and download the dedicated ASIO driver which must surely be there. But wait! Behringer mystically does not have a driver for this and offers the well-known general stand-in, ASIO4All. Anyone doing online jamming knows that ASIO4all is a really poor option. So, I went looking for information on the subject. Lots of folks provided links to where one could get the driver, identified as Behringer 2902 x64 version 2.8.40, but those links just went back to Behringer, who had meanwhile stopped providing the driver. So, I studied the advice pages of Jamulus where they told me that a German company called Ploytec provided that driver. A quick visit to Ploytec revealed that they sell an updated version 2.8.45 driver for TWICE THE PRICE OF THE UCA222 itself. Not to worry, though, some folks had put the old driver up at several places where it could be downloaded.

So, I set up the UCA222 without installing a driver, and Windows 10 simply installed its own driver for it. That driver is NOT low latency, so I uninstalled that Windows driver and installed the Behringer 2902 x64 version 2.8.40 [my second mistake]. When one looked up the detailed information inside Windows 10 for this driver, it indeed showed that the source is Ploytec.

I tried the device and.... WOW!....the latency was seriously low. I was very impressed. I tried it on Jamulus and...WOW!... I could do lag-free close harmony with a friend around 1200 miles away!!! I'm in Vancouver, Canada and he is just outside Santa Barbara in California!

    And then the hell started:

    # I tried to use Sonobus and no one could hear me, but I heard them perfectly. When I tried to adjust the Behringer driver settings inside Sonobus, it would hang and I had to kill it with Task Manager.

    # Then I noticed that any sound recording I made had an irritating and invasive “tic-tic-a-tic” sound imposed over any music. That “tic-tic-a-tic” would be absent when there was no music sound. Then I noticed that the “tic-tic-a-tic” was also created over Windows system sounds(!!!).

    # I uninstalled the UCA222 and its drivers, and the “tic-tic-a-tic” disappeared. So, it was clearly caused by the UCA222. But that “tic-tic-a-tic” WAS ABSENT when I used Jamulus with the UCA222, and there was still the wonderful low latency to consider. So, I decided to try hard to save the low latency UCA222 by any means I could. I could get around the “tic-tic-a-tic” by using another audio interface for recording work.

    # So, I went back to trying to get Sonobus to work. Sonobus indicated that my upload time was incredibly bad, but my download time was just fine. Then I found that Sonobus behaved exactly the same way when I used another interface. No amount of re-installing fixed the situation.

    # So, I looked at my actual upload times and download times provided by my internet service provider (isp). The download speed was 85 Mbps, which is better than specification. The upload time was anything from 0.5- about 6Mbps, which is certainly below spec. So, I contacted the isp [my third mistake] I entered a support death spiral with the isp, which ended with them stringing a better cable for me, swopping out the modem-router for a new one, installing a new line amplifier and a new cable switch outside the house.

    # The result of all this was, ... wait for it....still no Sonobus, still a lousy upload data rate, and still "tic-tic-tic", but I now had a new additional problem. The new modem-router messed up my home network and the isp refused to return the old modem-router. Clearly, I was in some insane sort of technological death-spiral here.

FINALLY, yesterday, I completely uninstalled the UCA222, uninstalled all the sound drivers, uninstalled Sonobus, and reinstalled everything except the UCA222 and its driver. Suddenly everything but Sonobus worked. I still had the issue with the modem-router, but for that I figured out a rather weird and tedious work-around, despite all the wrong advice from my ISP.

While removing the UCA222, an M-Audio M-track Duo arrived to replace it. It cost nearly three times as much as the UCA222. It does NOT have as low a latency despite what people say, but it does have a downloadable dedicated driver on the M-Audio website. It is installed and the “tic-tic-a-tic” is gone. I still have a Sonobus problem and lousy upload data-rate, but that was clearly not due to the UCA222. In fact, the ISP has finally admitted that they have had trouble with our neighborhood cable node for two weeks now, and offered me financial compensation for my trouble.

    IN CONCLUSION:

Yes, I made clear mistakes along the way here and I have indicated them for you, but fundamentally all of this was precipitated by buying this affordable "ULTRA low latency" UCA222 device from a name that WAS trusted: Behringer. Take this as a cautionary tale, before you get driven frantic, like I was for more than a week.

And, yes, the Sonobus problem and the modem-router problem were the fault of the ISP, NOT of the UCA222, but the UCA222 brought them to the fore and LED TO the new irritating modem-router.

If all you want is some little red box that might let you record something, then get the UCA222 by all means and use it with the default Windows drivers, but do not touch any driver marked "2.8.40", even if it says "Ploytec" in its details. Then live with the result.

Lastly, I notice that the UCA222 reads “UCA222” on the front, and “UCA202” on the back. The latter is a real existing product from Behringer, a name that used to be just fine. It also reads "Made in China", but so is almost every consumer item today.

So I spent quite a bit of time looking at different Barringer products I’ve seen some people say the 202 is superior because of X reason. Or the 222 is superior because of another X reason. So I think this is really the more appropriate answer to what everybody’s looking for when they research this item it’s got to be the same thing there’s no other explanation why this company would write one model number on one side of it a different model number on the other side of it (the black tape is covering the serial number because I didn’t want someone going on the website and getting software by registering the product using my serial number because I haven’t done that yet)( and I’m wearing a glove so you don’t have to look at my ugly hands because I can’t stand it when people put ugly hands in pictures LOL) and I totally do not believe it this is a bootleg item or a copy or something because it’s the same color all the way around we’re typically the 202 model is the silver model & also a lot more money on 鶹 at least. So it would make no sense to reproduce the much more inexpensive model using the much more expensive model to reproduce with so we can throw that idea out the window this is definitely not fake or anything like that it’s legitimate I just don’t understand how people doing all this heavy research can say one item is different than the other or how one in superior because of a certain thing it’s obviously the same item and I left a video of it so you could see that there isn’t any kind of trick photography at play or something like that, so you know that this is a 100% the same item made by Behringer and I definitely believe that you can take all those other peoples opinions on why something is different and throw it out the window because it really seems like they don’t know what they’re talking about I bet that the silver model the 202 is probably a much older model and that’s probably why it’s more money because it’s probably not available anymore and so you can probably only get it in limited numbers and it’s not a fact that’s just my opinion I don’t know why it’s almost 3 times the value I mean that would make sense to me why it cost more I don’t have that model and I’m not comparing it to that model. Ring to my own model it’s the same thing as both of them it’s just red instead of silver. The model I just purchased clearly states that it’s a ACU202 and a ACU222 I don’t know if somebody else has already said this but I can’t believe that I am the first person to figure this out maybe I’m not maybe this is already a review that’s already been given I didn’t really look at all the reviews I did do a lot of research into this item though before purchasing it because I wanted to know if I was purchasing the right one and I’ve seen so many different things on why again one or the other was superior in someway. I think bottom line get the cheaper one it’s going to be the exact same thing and until I see an actual comparison of the two different models in a review head to head against each other that clearly shows a difference they obviously are not different in anyway except for that one was probably not made recently where the other one was made recently.

Hope that helps somone do you wanna research into the two different model numbers like I did

How does operation how it sounds like kind of thing it’s fine it’s it’s does exactly what you probably expected to do and I haven’t found anything but it won’t do that it claims it can and it’s probably a lot more things you can do with it that I haven’t even figured out yet you can however use it to listen to a device that doesn’t have a headphone jack if it has a USB jack that I did figure out on my own so it’s good for the new iPads which only have a USB-C jack I put one of those mobile phone adapters the USB a to USB see adapter thing on the end plug in my iPad plugged in so the headphones into it and honestly it’s the cheapest way I’ve been able to figure out how to use the old you know headphone jacks with the what is that called LLRS I think connectors so I occasionally use it to listen to my older sets of headphones that I have that are really nice headphones but they’re just those older models they don’t have a USB-C connector and I just recently purchased a mini hub for IPad for Cheap on 鶹 and I didn’t work at all not even on any device I tried it on the more expensive hubs is probably what you would need and this UCA222 here is like half the price of the seconds cheapest iPad hub you can get so I mean that’s a plus right there which they don’t advertise this device as being able to do that however I figured out you could so that was a a nice little bonus I think all in all of this is U-Control UCA222 more than worth it’s value for what they charge ( it’s practically free) for it and again I hope this review helps also I sure know that I wish I could’ve read this review when I was looking into buying this. It would have saved me a lot of time even though it’s a very long review and mostly nonsense

    OK thank you very much!!!!

And Especially thank you seller I gave you five stars in everything I feel you more than deserve it

    1. This has RCA input - go for this if you want to RECORD audio from a mixer, amplifier or any other AV device that has AV output. This can work to record cassette / cd player audio to your computer. Cheapest option with reasonable quality.
    2. Few audio interfaces have both mic and line inputs. These are good for recording from AV source and mic input particularly for recording live music performance with instruments. Costlier than 1 above and the cost increases as you look for more inputs sources.
    3. You need a mixer, if you've multiple input sources. Do not go for audio interface with many inputs - you'll not get results with desired flexibility. Go for a mixer with as many inputs as you need and add an audio interface. You're good to go for both live performance, recording to PC.
There are analog audio mixers with usb interface, but the results of USB output to PC are not as expected unless you go for costly digital mixers. I went for this UCA222 with Yamaha MG10XU that gives best of all possible combinations for a professional quality amateur home studio.
The software mentioned in the specs need to be downloaded from their site. The download is trouble-free, but most of the software at their site are old releases of open source software. Get the latest versions directly from the sites. WaveForm 8 available from their site with this is a nice provision for beginners.

Purchased the UCA222 as i need audio optical S/PDIF output from my HTPC built with NUC12.
Connected with optical cable to my audio system.
Windows 11 recognized immediately after connection, just need to select audio output device.
No more problem with noise, ground loop, etc.
Output was selected as PCM 16bit/48kHz.
    Perfect.
Not tried as audio recording device or headphone amplifier.
Needed just as USB to Toslink converter.
