THE BLOCKBUSTER HIT - A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly best seller
Look for Lisa Wingate’s powerful new historical novel, The Book of Lost Friends, available now!
“Poignant, engrossing.” (People) “Lisa Wingate takes an almost unthinkable chapter in our nation’s history and weaves a tale of enduring power.” (Paula McLain)
Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge - until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents - but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.
Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.
Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals - in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country - Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 30, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is a fabulous book! Dark in some ways but such is the story line. I was even unable to read a page or two as it was just too difficult. You are engrossed with the characters tho & hope for the "happy" ending.o
- Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2019Verified PurchaseIn Memphis during the Depression, Rill Foss and her four younger siblings are kidnapped from their loving, but poor, Riverboat parents and are sent to the Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage. Told their parents will soon be coming to get them, Rill soon suspects the truth and fights, unsuccessfully, to keep her family together. In present day South Carolina, Avery Stafford, the privileged daughter of high society parents, stumbles across a long-held family secret and is compelled to uncover the truth.
Going in, I had no idea this book was inspired by actual events. Partway through, I was struck by the intricate detail and decided to check it out. I was horrified. Georgia Tann, who ran the Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole 5,000 children between 1924 and 1950, mostly from poor parents. About 500 children - 10%! - died in her care. Those who survived were adopted out at exorbitant fees, and at times she blackmailed the adoptive parents into paying even more and threatening to take back the children if they didn't. She had judges, police and various political officials in her pocket - at times, she accomplished this by giving them children! Happily, she did get caught and all of her crimes exposed. Sadly, she died before she could face justice. The case did prompt a whole raft of legislation designed to eliminate corruption in adoption, it's just too bad it took such horror for legislators to clue in that a free-for-all market in children was a bad idea.
Anyhow, regardless of the truth in the writing, the book itself is outstanding. The parallel, time-jumping storylines is becoming standard for a reason - because it's effective and Wingate nails it. The characters are so nuanced and complex I felt like they were real people. The suspense had me hanging on every word. I actually read most of it in an entire day spent curled up in a chair because I couldn't put it down.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 2, 2021Verified PurchaseI read this for a book club meeting. The author did a great job of knitting together two female heroines in two different time periods. The settings she used, the Mississippi River shantyboat near Memphis 1939 and the present day low country of South Carolina were excellent. The description of the real life Tennessee Children’s Home Society Orphanage and Georgia Tann were horrifying. The theme of man against man when it’s children for profit is bone chilling. I wish she hadn’t spent so much time setting up the story. I was anxious to get on with it. I wish she had written about where the other children had gone and how they reconnected with each other. She could have elaborated more on the love story. . It was a good ending though and she tied up loose ends well. I enjoyed it and learned something I didn’t know. Nowadays we have DNA to help people reconnect and surrogacy so these problems are a thing of the past hopefully.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 27, 2023Verified PurchaseThis book would not allow me to put it down on several occasions. The fact that it's loosely based on a very real and problematic time in history makes it all the more interesting. The author did an excellent job of allowing us to "see and hear" all the characters very clearly. Many times I found myself holding my breath at what I was afraid might happen next. So well written. Such an awful history.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 19, 2025Verified PurchaseA nice easy read ideal for lazy days at the beach. The character development is shallow and the plot not very deep.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 29, 2023Verified PurchaseWow, what a book! I really enjoyed this one and it kept me enthralled with it the entire time. There were no parts that seemed to drag on. The book exposed a horrific part of history that I was unaware of, The Tennessee Children's Home Society Orphanage. What a terrible life many of the orphans experienced! It is a fictitious novel with some truth to it. I would highly recommend this novel. I rate it as 5+++ stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love & Family
Verified Purchase"Before We Were Yours" by Lisa Wingate is a captivating novel that intertwines past and present, delivering a powerful story brimming with emotion, mystery, and resilience. This book delves deep into the intricacies of family bonds and the dark corners of history that many would prefer remain hidden.
The narrative toggles between two timelines: one centered around Rill Foss, a young girl living in 1939 Memphis, and the other following Avery Stafford, a modern-day lawyer exploring her family’s mysterious past. The story opens up with young Rill and her siblings, who live a carefree life aboard their family's shantyboat on the Mississippi River until they are abruptly taken away from their parents and thrust into the corrupt Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage. Here, they encounter unimaginable hardships while clinging to the hope of reuniting with their loved ones.
Wingate weaves Avery's journey gracefully alongside Rill's heart-wrenching past. Avery stumbles upon an old photograph that ignites her curiosity, prompting a quest for truth that uncovers long-buried secrets impacting her own identity. Her search serves as a conduit, bringing the harrowing experiences of Rill and her siblings to light, revealing how these past injustices have rippled through generations.
Wingate’s writing is vivid and evocative, painting each scene with rich detail, which makes it easy to become immersed in the world she has created. The characters are well-developed and relatable, drawing readers into their struggles and triumphs. The emotional depth of the story pulls you in, evoking a range of feelings from anger and frustration over the historical injustices depicted, to hope and admiration for the characters' resilience.
What sets "Before We Were Yours" apart is its ability to shed light on real historical events—the scandal involving Georgia Tann and the Tennessee Children’s Home Society—while crafting a fictional narrative that is both poignant and inspiring. It’s a testament to the power of familial love and the human spirit’s capacity to endure against all It invites reflection on the importance of understanding our past to better appreciate and shape our present and future.
