I remember enjoying this series so much and I am enjoying it all again.
There is much that I forgot or maybe missed when it aired. The acting is great, the writing is great, and the sets are great.
It's really great!
- Reviewed in Canada on December 7, 2013Verified PurchaseThere seems to be questions about the contents...Here is what I can tell you.
Each season is packaged as a slipcase, and all four are housed in a sturdy box. There is no additional paper notes, other than what is printed on the disc sleeves. Each and every disk is packaged in it's own translucent white slim "keeper case" (except "The Plan" which is double packed with a season 4 disc). "Razor" is included in season 4 (4 and 4.5 are packed as one set)
For a complete BSG reimagined set, "Blood & Chrome", and Caprica season 1 & 2 (both predate BSG in the timeline) are all that is missing.
As for content, there are many additional bonus features, all of which appear on any of the individual season releases I have seen, and even "The Plan" and "Razor" discs are the same as those I already own (with the slim case on "Razor", and no separate "The Plan" case, I will keep my existing copies simply to have them hold a visible spot on the shelf).
As for rating the shows...well, they're BSG...what else needs to be said? If you like BSG, you'll like this. I was a bit skeptical of the reimagined series, as I am a big fan of BSG 1978 (and hated BSG 1980) but this is a very well made series with some excellent actors and top-notch special effects. While it is sci-fi, it is done in a manner which makes it believable, and the storylines are enough to hold a viewer's attention even if they are not sci-fi fans. I particularly like the space scenes, which are much more believable than most of what we have seen on the screen.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 25, 2024Verified PurchaseTHis is the very best space opera. Good writing, innovative casting and complex multifaceted characters, real issues dealt with realistically. Interesting spiritual issues dealt with and the supernatural component alongside a very hard science base.
- Reviewed in Canada on June 20, 2024Verified PurchaseIn retrospect, it¡¯s amazing to think how controversial the Ron Moore Battlestar Galactica reimagining was at the turn of the century. Venerable Boomer and Gen X nerds railed at the idea of their 70s, Disco-Inspired space fantasy being given a grim, gritty, post-9/11 treatment with moral outrages like making Starbuck and Boomer women or allowing Cylons to appear human. Flash forward to today, and the series is now considered a classic not just of science fiction TV but prestige television in general, and for fans of the show, this is probably the best way to own the series.
Of course, this comes with a certain caveat. Yes, the show was shot in high definition, but it was done with a deliberately grim, gritty, often handheld, almost war correspondent aesthetic that tried to make the situations feel live and unfiltered rather than carefully staged. The result is a grainy, sometimes even blown-out image, and, as the discs say at the start of each season, this does not mean your TV settings are wrong; this is the way it¡¯s supposed to look. However, the show quickly finds its footing as the series goes on and manages to strike a nice balance between this ¡°you-are-there¡± cinematography and sharper, more composed photography. Just keep in mind it doesn¡¯t look as polished as Bladerunner because it was never supposed to.
Audio, however, is a pure delight. You get a terrific 5.1 lossless audio track for every episode, and they didn¡¯t skimp the sound effects or music. Bear McCreary¡¯s percussive soundtrack gets a lot of impact, and even the muted space battles have a lot of punch. It¡¯s a TV series, so not every episode is perfectly mixed with dialog, but for the most part, it does it right, and the surround sound provides some occasional immersive atmosphere in settings like the C&C or the fighter hangars or during combat sequences. Primarily, however, it¡¯s pretty front-heavy.
This set is also chock full of extras. There are commentaries for specific episodes, documentary features, and, of course, some fantastic, big extra content, like the ¡°interstitial¡± movies Razor and The Plan and even the short "webisodes," "The Resistance." The only thing that stops this collection¡¯s extras from being totally complete is the addition of the webisodes for Face of the Enemy, which took place during the season 4 mid-season break, and Blood & Chrome, a Galactica prequel series covering Adama¡¯s last days during the previous Cylon/Colonial war.
For fans of the show, this is an easy and essential buy. Even if you don¡¯t have a 4K TV and a Dolby Atmos home theater, the HD image and the 5.1 audio are still miles ahead of what you¡¯d see and hear when streaming the show, which is how most people these days would watch it. Streaming is, due to the needs of bandwidth, a compressed, lossy format, so watching these on HD streams is often not much better than watching on DVD. Fans who want to see this show at its absolute gritty best should invest in the Blu-ray collection, and if you¡¯ve got a 5.1 or better home theater system, this is likely the best the series will ever look and sound to you. Best of all, unlike streaming platforms with their constantly shifting licensing rights, once you own these discs, you own the show forever; there¡¯s no watchlist a company can arbitrarily remove it from. It also helps a lot that the pricing is now well below a hundred dollars, which gives this a lot of value compared to the over CAD$200 asking price it commanded when it first hit the market.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2023Verified PurchaseAs the seasons progress the writing in this show goes from good to very good to excellent to jaw dropping. You can also see the actors really get better at their roles as the shows roll on by. By the end of the series you get gut punched and surprised a few times each episode. As well, the special effects and CGI got better and better from season to season, so that was a bonus.
I literally just finished the last episode a few hours ago and I still have goose bumps. It literally brought a lump to my throat. Cannot recommend this series highly enough. H'wood does not produce shows like this anymore.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 6, 2014Verified PurchaseI treated myself to the gift of the blu-ray box set. It's a great experience. If you're a fan, this is a must for your collection.
The only issue I have is that the last disc of the last season has some sort of flaw. I can't recall the episode, but it starts to bug out about half way through the episode. Actually, now that I recall, it happened another time on one of the 2nd season discs. Now, perhaps this is an issue with my ps3. I've stated to watch the series again on a straight up blu-ray player, I'll update once I finish the season to see if the problem persists.
Ok, my favourite episode... when the the BSG jumps into the upper atmosphere of planet and is barrelling down... the BOOM, jumps out of the way at the last second before impact. The sound track to this series is also amazing. All along the watchtower... sweet jebuz!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Time Always Feels Like the First Time
Verified PurchaseFor all of the controversy surrounding this series when it first premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel on December 8 - 9, 2003, I immediately got onboard and took the journey with this story. The actors, the visual effects, and the musical score by the awesomely talented Bear McCreary all work perfectly together. Everything you want in an apocalyptic science fiction story is here.
Every character is deeply flawed. Every subject covered from suicide bombings to political maneuvering, black markets, religious beliefs, man-made technology, etc., mirrors our own society of overabundance of everything. This shows us how we as people may respond when our world falls apart and we must work with each other instead of against each other, to survive nuclear annihilation.
Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell lead an incredible cast of human and Cylon characters, that play off of each other flawlessly. The writing is the best that a science fiction series has ever had. Ron Moore intentionally changed a few things ¨C particularly the character of Starbuck becoming a female ¨C so that fans of the original would not be able to compare the performances of the two actors. It was a brilliant move, and I must say, it was the right choice. Katee Sackhoff is incredible in the role.
Also along for the search for Earth is Jamie Bamber, Grace Park, Michael Hogan, Michael Trucco, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Dean Stockwell, Aaron Douglas, Lucy Lawless, Tahmoh Pennikett, Kandyse McClure, Bodie Olmos, Donnelly Rhodes, Nicki Clyne, Callum Keith Rennie, Mark Sheppard, Kate Vernon, Allesandro Juliani, Rekha Sharma, Richard Hatch (from the original 1978 ¨C 1979 series), and enough amazing guests to make this water cooler TV. Two feature length movies are included, RAZOR and THE PLAN.
For science fiction thrills, dramatic cliffhangers, shockingly surprising ¡°nobody is safe¡± character exits, and brain-bending suspense, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA cannot be stopped or topped. It continues to remain relevant twenty-two years after its premiere. Pick it up and join the masses of die-hard fans who have embraced and enjoyed this story in all its fantastic glory. You¡¯ll become a fan faster than it takes the Galactica to make an FTL jump.
Stick around after the credits have ended for hilarious little cartoons of Ron Moore and David Eick killing each other after every episode.
So say we all!
Box Set Running Time: 69 hours, 31 minutes. and hours of bonus features.
