BARBIE
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on
existential crisis. Or you're a Ken.
BARBIE
BARBIE
“Making a Barbie movie was an amazing opportunity, one we thought we could do something really
special with if we could approach it in an unexpected, surprising and clever way. We knew it was a lot to
take on, as audiences probably have a preconceived notion of how they think and feel about Barbie,
whether good or bad. So, that presented a big challenge, but we were up for the challenge.”
– Margot Robbie
KEN
“My Ken was created to just observe the awesomeness that is Barbie, and there’s even a line in the film
when he says he only exists within the warmth of Barbie’s gaze. He has no identity of his own, so he’s in
a kind of existential hell. But he’s given a job, which is ‘beach.’ And he’s not sure what that job is
specifically, but he really wants to be good at it.”– Ryan Gosling
GLORIA
“Gloria is the ‘every woman.’ At work she’s low on the totem pole. She has longtime dreams of climbing
up the ladder and influencing the brand she works on. I didn’t grow up playing with Barbies or think that
I had any relationship to Barbie, but we all do, because she’s such a part of our culture.”
– America Ferrara
WEIRD BARBIE
“If you asked me to pick a role for myself, it would be this Barbie. My sister had a bunch of Barbies
whose hair she brushed and whose clothes she cared for, but there was one receptacle of her ire that
got its head shaved. You keep a Barbie with her legs splayed as far as they will go – it’s just a Barbie that
every little girl grew up with.”– Kate McKinnon
KEN
Kens are just Kens. They just hang around and a lot of their identity is derived from being able to win the
gaze of the Barbies, and so they are really just kind of hypercompetitive about really dumb things. It’s
revealed that my Ken is a skilled dancer, and he can do backflips and Ryan’s Ken really resents that.”
– Simu Liu
PRESIDENT BARBIE
“The most flattering thing in the world is when Greta said, ‘You know, when I was thinking about who I
wanted to be President in this world, I thought wouldn‘t it be cool if Issa were President?’ And I was like,
‘What, me?’ To have the opportunity to play President of all the Barbies, even though all Barbies can do
anything and are capable of everything, is such a treat.”
– Issa Rae
ALLAN
“The way that Greta and Noah handle my character in the movie is that Allan’s sort of this marginalized
person in this world of Kens; he’s basically not a success or popular. He’s just a loner, always on the
periphery, desperate to fit in but really just not on the same wavelength as the Ken fraternity around
him.”– Michael Cera
MATTEL CEO
“Greta encouraged us to improvise, and that encouraged more ideas between myself, Jamie Demetriou
and Connor Swindells. It gave us the chance to really feel like we were a team and know each other and
play off of each other, to bicker amongst each other and give this silly framework to this big, important
CEO and his lackeys. It was fun to create this dynamic between us that we're all fumbling and
bumbling.”– Will Ferrell

- Reviewed in Canada on February 27, 2024Verified PurchaseIts called Barbie and is so very Barbie, but Ken stole the show. Many of us harshly judged Ryan Gosling being cast for the role before seeing the movie, but he was perfect.
The set design was incredible. Everything in Barbie Land looks like someone took the toys and made them life-size. I was lowkey jealous of the actors because they got to interact with all of that; I wanted the opportunity to walk around the sets of Barbie Land and touch everything, see if it felt like the toys.
Some parts of the movie went on a little too long and at points the movie itself felt too long, but overall it had good messaging. The people who call it anti-male clearly missed the point (if it's anti-male, why is everyone quoting Ken, talking about Ken, singing his song and wanting the I Am Kenough hoodie?) Also [SPOILER ALERT] Barbie owns up to her share of ish, too. We need Barbie's (women) but we also need Ken's...and Alan's and pregnant Midge's. And it's okay to be weird; the weirdos are sometimes the only ones who are able to help fix problems because they have a unique perspective, but also the ones who appear to be ordinary or stereotypical have their own strengths, too. We were all made different and that's okay. But nobody wants a TV in their back.
I don't know how this movie became so controversial, but I do know I'm not alone in hoping there will be a Ken movie starring Ryan and co-starring Margot. Ken stans want to know how he's coming along on his journey without his Barbie and we also want to know how Barbie's integration is going and if she's going to meet Blaine. (You don't remember Blaine? For a time, Barbie and Ken were donezo and she rebounded with a Bratz Boy looking Aussie named Blaine. Can't really blame her; he was cute, had awesome hair, a cool accent many could listen to all day and night and HE thinks SHE has the accent. A fling was bound to happen lol)
- Reviewed in Canada on March 19, 2025Verified PurchaseIt wasn't nearly as funny as it was advertised to be. And unfortunately for me, the impact didn't hit either.
My main problem with this movie is that it was a message first and a movie second. That makes it feel cheap and propaganda-ish. If they had found a way to make the message and story a little more seamless and less of 'man on a soapbox' kind of vibe I think I'd be more into it.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 7, 2023Verified PurchaseThe visuals and cast were great. The rest was "meah". Overly simplistic story line with feminist arguments that have been made over and over for the past 30+ years. No renessaiance or age of enlightenment minds at play here. I'm a female, and fully support women's equal rights, but the movie just kept hammering home what everyone already knows (We have a patriarchy) and the ending was boring, I actually fell asleep. I only watched it for the hype. Wouldn't bother watching it again. I also grew up never owning a barbie. My parents raised me in the country with walkie talkies, sleds, go-carts and lots of outdoor activities. We had tree houses, boats and animals. I think the stereotype that little girls just play inside with Barbie dolls is sexist in itself. The idea that they got barbies that were career dolls also kinda limiting, especially when beauty, pink bows and ultra-girlie is still so heavily emphasized. I think we've been sold enough pink handled tools (which is derogatory in itself). If you really want your little girls to grow up and be amazing, take them outside, teach them skills, and encourage them into hands on trades & skills. Oh, and stop with the pink. If you really want the wold to change, please stop telling us that all we need is a make over and/or a diet plan to boost our self esteem. Please stop selling us sexy-halloween costumes, and stop printing the words "princess" over everything with sparkles. Looks doesn't make the person. Skills & accomplishments do. When you stop marketing us as objects or commodities, the world will actually start seeing us a human beings.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2025Verified PurchaseLoved how this was a girl's film. I believe younger girls should watch this movie because we all have that moment in our lives when we feel we can no longer like the things that are deemed "girly" because it isn't cool or makes us weak as women. Then, we start to dislike anything that is considered "girly," which includes Barbies. I believe this will be a healing movie for younger girls and even us millennials who are now starting to take back our feminity and openly enjoying "girly" things. I know I've been sporting pink more than I have in my entire life since watching Barbie.
