Moving Check List

The best way to handle a complex task like moving is to break it down into smaller tasks. Use the check list below to track what you’ve accomplished and what still must be done.

1–2 Months Before Moving Day

Packing:
  • Room by room, sort through possessions and decide what to keep
  • Donate or discard any items you no longer need
  • Return borrowed items to neighbors and friends
  • Have your valuables appraised and insured
  • Start packing nonessential items
  • Organize packed items and sealed boxes in one corner of each room

Action Items:
  • Keep a file of your moving paperwork so everything you need is in one place
  • Get 2–3 estimates from moving companies or truck rental companies
  • Make your reservation with the moving company of your choice
  • Fill out a change of address form at your local post office
  • Inform your bank, creditors, and others of your change of address
  • Contact the utilities to cancel your old service/set-up new service
  • Transfer school, medical, and veterinary records
  • Book any travel arrangements you may need
1 Week Before Moving Day
  • Place items that you plan to move yourself in a separate area
  • Pack a suitcase with clothing, toiletries, and other necessities for the first few days in your new home
  • Pack a box for items you will need right away such as garbage bags, toilet paper, wet wipes, cleaning supplies, phone, etc.
  • Confirm your reservation with the moving company

Moving Day
  • Read the bill of lading prepared by your mover before signing it
  • Note any damage to possessions as they are brought into your new home

Moving Tips

To begin, you will need boxes, cushioning materials such as bubble wrap and packing tissue, scissors, box cutters, box labels, permanent markers--but no tape.
  • Start packing in a space that is not often used such as a basement or garage
  • Set up a folding table so you can pack boxes at a comfortable height
  • Pack heavier items at the bottom of a box and more delicate items near the top
  • Line the bottom of the box with cushioning materials such as bubble wrap, packing tissue, or even paper towels
  • Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or tissue paper before packing them up
  • Fill open spaces inside your box with towels or linens to minimize the risk of damage
  • Top off the box with more cushioning materials before you close it up
  • Write or place a “fragile” sticker on boxes with delicate items
  • Keep the weight of each box below 40 lbs., especially when packing books
  • Avoid placing items from different rooms in the same box
  • List the room and box contents on a label for each box
  • Mark both the top and side of the box for easy identification
  • Label the boxes that need to be unpacked first with a different color marker
  • Use a dolly to move stacked boxes

    SpecialNotes, I always pack electronic items wrapped in thick towels to cushion/absorb shock. And it's better for the environment than the little plastic and styrofoam-bits. Secure with Clear Scotch packing tape and you're good to go!

    Now, since you’re not getting a set of 10,* the prices could be lower, like wholesale, but for the size dimensions, they seemed to be the best as far as cost goes, out there so far… And/but the ease of shipping for those who don't drive or are older and don't have time to lug the large sets from the store made it a no brainer..

    It’s been a while since I’ve used these brands of boxes so I will update this review once I have been able to use the boxes during transport. But I just wanted to put it out there as an option to try out, for short-term in-town moving needs, in case other people had any problems finding specific computer moving boxes, it might be a viable option! Hope this helps!

    So overall, definitely worth looking into for busy electronic equipment short-term moving needs!

    I have moved internationally 6x in 5yrs so I have a lot of experience with box quality, and more importantly, how to pack things so they don't break (I likewise unfortunately have a lot of experience with items that HAVE broken).

    I got the semi-double-wall Bankers Box Medium Heavy-Duty boxes (with separate lids) which are very nice for moving your own office in your car or storing items, etc. but EVEN THESE are NOT suitable for moving companies or truck/pallet moving. I thought I would put these INSIDE the Prime Large moving boxes (this item) for box-in-box shipping.

    Seeing the great reviews, and thinking the "Prime" line would ALSO BE DOUBLE WALL construction, I was excited to get these 24x18x18 boxes.

    I was VERY disappointed in the quality and design. First of all, they are SINGLE WALL construction, and even then the cardboard quality is very low - these are similar cardboard to what 鶹 will send you socks or a single book in. On top of this, the no-tape assembly, which works well in their 'heavy-duty with lid' line of boxes is a disaster here - the larger size of the box and the thinner cardboard means the bottom sags with anything over maybe ~10-15lbs. Given that this is their LARGE box that's not acceptable - anything heavier than a blanket and some plush animals (i.e. what they show in their ad picture!) is going to be dangerously underprotected in this box. The stacking is also TERRIBLE. Just pushing on the top of of this box caves it in immediately. This was TOTALLY unacceptable as movers will absolutely stack the boxes in the truck, then on a pallet, then on another truck... the box is going to be crushed before it even leaves your house, never mind whatever its protecting inside!

    Finally, the lid-less design looks great... but in practice is a gimmick. I had always intended to tape everything anyway, but the way the lid handle bends inside is silly - it doesn't hold and the box top pops up. This construction, unlike common simple 4 leaf construction, also WEAKENS the top of the box even for this grade of cardboard. So this box is actually WEAKER than a standard tape-assembled box of equivalent cardboard grade.

    All-in-all this is basically a box for people who 1) have no idea how to pack anything or 2) are packing very low-value and/or very robust items - sure I'll throw boxes of pasta or maybe some blankets in this thing or 3) are just using them around the house.

    They are utterly unsuitable for any sort of 'moving' and are even worse for parcel shipping than the boxes 鶹 regularly uses, which are themselves very low grade.

    As a contrast, you can try the Bankers Box Medium Heavy Duty line - these are NOT suitable for moving/shipping either, but they're at least good quality semi-double wall boxes with a good lid and are easy to pick up with strong handles.

    For contrast, even some single-wall 18x18x18 boxes that a mail-order fresh 'meals' company sends me has a veritable armored box by comparison in terms of sidewall impact strength, stacking weight, and top crush resistance. So even though its single-walled, the cardboard grade makes a huge difference. I am happily shipping ceramic bowls in these strong single walled boxes with lots of bubble wrap and foam (box-in-box would be best though).

    There's zero chance I'm shipping anything in these boxes. Returned to 鶹.

    Don't Buy. Find double walled boxes or heavier grade cardboard. MANY better box options exist for actual moving.
