Follow me to keep up with my new releases! I love writing fiction inspired by true events and nonfiction based on my experience as a ballet teacher and former dancer with Houston Ballet.

As a proud New Orleans native, I’ve authored five fiction novels and several scripts. Two are optioned, and one finished in the top ten action/adventure category for the PAGE International Screenwriting Competition.

Garage Ballet® offers nonfiction instructional books with easy-to-understand explanations of ballet technique and training, as well as short novellas that combine ballet knowledge with a winning teenage character, a ballerina in need of encouragement, friends, and help coping with family.

While writing fiction and nonfiction, I discovered that reality often surpasses the bounds of imagination. Real-life locations stir my creativity and ignite a passion for weaving urban legends with historically accurate threads of region and time.

In my writing universe, unpredictable is the only predictable, and everything can change in an instant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, even if you're not into ballet, believe it or not.

I would recommend this book to anyone who practices ballet or has a child or, as in my case, grandchildren who are interested, or who might be.

I danced as a child. My parents were tap dancers, "hoofers", as were other family members, so I took tap lessons when I was little, followed by ballet. It resulted in some small productions (it was a small town) but culminated with a pretty ambitious production of The Nutcracker Suite, in which all of the dance students of all ages and levels were involved, and one of my sweetest and clearest memories is of the younger girls, me included, admiring the older girl who danced the lead. She was beautiful and resplendent in her costume and makeup, but very kind and generous and humble, too. I wanted nothing more than that, to be a dancer, but shortly thereafter my mother said no more ballet.

So now I have granddaughters, and they are of that age, and I want them to at least have a sampling of what I experienced, so I got this book, and lived those days again, but I'm also prepared to press my suit on behalf of my beloved girls.

If you dance, this book will re-inspire you, but if, like me, you missed the boat, it will make you aware not only of what you missed, it will help you to give the gift of dance to those you love most: your own children and grandchildren. Some of the greatest athletes in the world are ballet dancers, and even those who don't achieve fame are benefited by the discipline, mentally and physically, but also emotionally. In retrospect, it was ballet that gave me the tools to overcome a lot in the course of my life, for which I am very humbly grateful.

You won't go wrong reading this book. There's much to learn in these pages.

“Ballet Helps Everything!: Ten Reasons Why (Garage Ballet Book 1)” by Dawn C. Crouch is an interesting combination of her own history with the ballet, life lessons she learned from ballet, and a little about ballet on the side. Although I loved watching ballet, my own experience stopped after one lesson when my instructor broke her leg skiing. No problem. This book is enjoyable for the novice as well as the expert. I learned a lot about the history of ballet, such as this: “Before the Bolshoi was a famous ballet company, it was an orphanage. The dancers in that first Bolshoi company were random children with no family, no unique talents, and no known aptitude for physical prowess.”

She talks about Spatial Awareness, something I wish more people had learned. “Spatial Awareness means that you, as a person, know where your body begins and ends and also where your body stands in relation to everyone and everything around it.”

Crouch uses regular font and italicized font, but I can’t find anywhere why she did this. It could be to distinguish her own experience from the world of ballet, but this pattern didn’t hold out.

Besides sharing ballet knowledge, Crouch also gives other lessons along the way: “Please, I know and beg forgiveness from the Ballet gods for this terrible breach of etiquette… Wearing a costume in the audience is a huge faux pas for any student! Never do this!”

She spices up the book with quotes from celebrities, most of whom — but not all — are famous ballet artists:
    • “No dancer can watch Fred Astaire and not know that we all should have been in another business.” — Mikhail Baryshnikov
    • “The higher up you go, the more mistakes you are allowed. Right at the top, if you make enough of them, it’s considered to be your style.” — Fred Astaire

I can see how ballet might help someone beyond learning poise and staying in shape. “My words seemed to soothe her mixture of anger and panic, but her concern speaks to problems encountered by dancers who begin their study as adults, as well as younger students whose skills advance like broken gears in jumps and starts rather than a smooth progression.”

Crouch’s writing style is also uplifting. You will feel better for having read her book!
