This is a very gritty story about a drug addicted police officer. Harvey Keitel's performance is amazing. My biggest problem with this film was that I kept asking myself "Where are his bosses?" I will warn you that some scenes are VERY graphic.

This version does not have the problematic music in the background at a couple of moments. This was a copyright issue, but most people won't know about it. There are a few copies floating around which apparently include this music. This doesn't.

This is the version with the full-frontal, male nudity in a scene which makes the film raw, and first made me appreciate Keitel's awesome ability as an actor.

Wow! I was quite glad to find this film on DVD relatively cheap. Well, this "un-cut" NC-17 version is even darker, eerier and more pathetic in mood than the last tape I rented of it. There are many additional scenes and the downward spiral of Keitel's character is finally set free from the censors, who must have had a field day on it in the past. This film is much deeper than just a gritty drug movie. If you just want to see Harvey Keitel smoking crack and masterbating than you are missing the power of this great film. I've always felt this movie captures true "desperation" in a beautifully black and empty way. Keitel's character is madly searching for ANYTHING to give him a crumb of pleasure in life. He is floundering about in this hazy narration of his final days on earth. The film is like a depressing abstract painting of Keitel's post mortem convulsions. I am not one for resiting the plot - you can read the back of this DVD. I'll just say it is surely my favorite Keitel film and an all around upsetter for the weak of heart! It will upset you, captivate you and maybe even make you think. Now go rent it and play it for your friends!

Although this is an older movie, I felt compelled to write a review after I recently saw it. Besides the fact that this movie has no redeeming moral values at all, it is also utterly depressing. After watching this I wondered what the actual point of this movie is. It seems like the director is trying to make some profound statement about the human condition, but I fail to fully understand his message. If you really want to see a classic movie dealing w/ corrupt cops then go rent Serpico. It made me sick to think that there probably are morally unjust cops like Harvey Keitel's character.
Do yourself a favor and dodge this absolutely stagnant garbage. I would easily watch Shaq-Fu continuously, than suffer through this film again. If you decide to disregard my words and rent this movie, then make sure you bathe yourself in holy water after it's over.

Harvey Keitel plays a jaded N.Y. detective, supporting his large catholic family and can't seem to go 5min without some kind of substance abuse. Among the crime scenes he investigates, he has a betting pool with his cronies in the world series finals of N.Y. Mets vs. L.A. Dodgers. He has secret rendezvous with drug dealers, users, and sexual relations, all while maintaining a gruff and professional demeanor. But when a nun gets raped in a church, and refuses to identify the perpetrators, the cop is conflicted with her and his own morals. A gritty, sleazy, and uncomfortable movie on all accounts. But Keitel's commitment to the character is astounding! Plus Abel Ferrera's filming style is almost documentary like, and gives the viewer a clear 'ride along' experience. Unapologetic, unnerving, and unforgettable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beeindruckende Charakterstudie!

In this film you get to follow a completely, without any redeeming features bent cop on his journey through booze & bribes, crack and heroin abuse and some kind of long term relationship with two prostitutes, while all the while having a family at home.

In the blurb on the back it suggests theirs redemption for him by following up the rape of a nun and chasing down the perpetrators of the crime, but in my opinion even this seems to be a double edged version of redemption (Is he doing it for the Nun on himself?)

It's a fantastic sleazy, bleak film ,which has the backdrop of a still un-gentrified, pre Starbuck New York , in all of it's filthy beauty.

I was surprised to find the film was made in the 90's it has a far older seventies feel to it.

It makes the remake seem plastic and cheesy, and you end up wondering why would you bother remaking something so brilliant.

    Fantastic.
