- Reviewed in Canada on May 3, 2025Verified PurchaseGreat sci-fi series! The only issues with the set are the inconvenient packaging (hard to take out discs), lack of bonus features, and the fact that the included pilot film The Gathering is cropped for some reason.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 26, 2023Verified PurchaseI watched this when it was on TV when I was much younger. The special effects were top notch. Sadly, these days, the special effect kinda blow BUT, they are ok enough... the story and acting makes up for it anyways. There are so many wonderful characters in this show... but, if you're buying this, you probably already know that! So, how about the Bluray quality?
Well, I had already watched it through "other" <cough pirated> means in the past over a year ago... BUT, I BUY my stuff whenever possible when available. So, I preordered this as soon as I saw it was being released.
Well, it didn't take long to archive it into my own personal Plex server (I don't share it). The quality is what I remember watching a year earlier. The DVD is widescreen BUT that stretches the ancient SFX (special effects which were done in 4:3)... and makes them look worse. So, the bluray is only 4:3 BUT, it works. The SFX look a tad better than the DVD version because they are not stretched out anymore. A shame we can't remaster this show like they did Star Trek TNG... they went through every episode and redid it from scratch. I think the original masters are lost to Babylon 5 which is why they can't do that with this show. BUT, I am hopeful that in the future our technology will allow us to remaster ANY show even without the masters - because AI should be getting smart enough to do this in a few years hopefully! :)
Anyways, it's an upgrade from the DVD's. The picture quality is great. Sometimes it does feel a tad too bright... I turned my Samsung 4k TV down 1 notch in brightness to watch this and it seemed to look even better.
I'm happy with this purchase.
A shame this wonderful show was never allowed to continue in Crusader for more than a dozen of episodes... annoying executives trying to tell creators what to do... especially after creating something so wonderful as Babylon 5.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 12, 2023Verified PurchaseThese are the remastered Season 1-5 episodes that were streamed originally on HBO Max. As with those, these episodes are now back in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, which is actually a good thing.
There seem to be a lot of misconceptions here about the "widescreen" version of Babylon 5 that was released on DVD, and if that's all one has ever seen I can understand why the shift would be confusing. As was common in the 90s, the show was shot on film with the uncommon effort made back then to protect the filming for widescreen, however any shot with CGI or other compositing was only ever rendered in 4:3. This resulted in a DVD release that frequently flip-flopped between SD 16:9 non-effect shots and cropped and zoomed 4:3 effect shots that were of horrible quality and had vital details cropped out. For an effects-heavy show like Babylon 5 it truly was a horrible way to watch the series. The 16:9 version of B5 was never "HD".
The remaster now features those non-effect shots in full 1080p scanned from the original elements and the effects shots are upscaled from their SD counterparts but now no longer cropped and zoomed, both are a seamless 4:3 as originally aired. The result is a FAR less jarring transition from effect to non-effect scenes. It's not perfect, definitely no Star Trek TNG remaster where they redid everything, but it's the best WB is likely to ever invest in the property and totally worth the buy to get B5 as it was meant to look once again.
The packaging is terrible. If they stop making the cardboard slip covers for this thing to mildly protect it I imagine it'll arrive in a million pieces like all of these other large DVD stack cases do.
The lack of special features is a disappointment but aside from the commentaries I rarely watch them so it's not a huge loss for me. It's baffling though why they wouldn't at least have included the commentary tracks. The Gathering is also presented in the DVD's SD up-scale 16:9 format, it is not remastered and is the TNT Special Edition released in 1998.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2025Verified PurchaseWe've rewatched the DVD every few years. Finally decided to get the Blu Ray and am very surprised at the enhanced quality of the video. It's still from 30 years ago, so there is some grainyness in some scenes, but the improvement over the DVD definitely merits 5 stars for this product. If you love Babylon 5, you've got to watch it on Blu Ray!

- Reviewed in Canada on October 24, 2024Verified PurchaseI owned all of Babylon 5 on dvd, but when it was re-released on blu-ray, I had to get that as well. It takes a lot less space, and the video and audio quality are superb. There are so many great scenes and lines in the series, many of them said by Londo and Ivanova. "What's that animal, the one that goes 'quack.'?" "A cat." "It feels like I'm being nibbled to death by cats." "No boom?" "No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's ALWAYS a boom tomorrow." Then there's spoo. Every society in the galaxy has its own version of Swedish meatballs. AMAZING!

5.0 out of 5 stars Babylon5, finally in good quality.
Verified PurchaseIt is a bit tricky to get in in Japan, so I think the price is acceptable. The Blue Rays themselves are great, the format is 4:3 like the original but the picture quality is much better than I expected.
I immediately started rewatching the first season and I am blown away how good the writing already was in the beginning.
This series is basically the Game of Thrones of the 90s. Totally underappreciated considering how good it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly great, some not so great, some just plain bad
Verified PurchaseI struggled whether to give a 4- or 5-star review. I ended up going with 5 stars mostly for nostalgia's sake. This is the best version of Babylon 5 we'll ever see. It's not without flaws, but overall it's better than I'd been hoping and fearing it would be.
The Gathering: First, let me say I'm grateful they included the Special Edition version of The Gathering, not the original pilot that aired in '93. The original was...interesting, and we'll just leave it at that. The SE version is completely re-edited and re-scored, and it's a massive improvement over the original, across the board. No comparison between the 2 versions.
Unfortunately, I don't believe they remastered The Gathering. It looks like a poor upscale from SD. I've watched the DVD and now the BluRay versions, and the DVD (480i, 30 fps, 5226 kb/s) offers far superior picture quality on a 4k monitor than this upscaled version (1080p, 24 fps, 23.9 Mb/s). Frankly, I'm dismayed by the picture quality given the massive bitrate, it's a real shame. If you have it, don't throw away your DVD. Plus, the DVD has a commentary track by JMS & John Iacovelli that's missing from the BluRay.
Seasons 1-5: This is why we purchased this set. Awesome! Still watching, but so far all episodes are in glorious HD in their original 4:3 aspect ratio. Never thought I'd ever see these episodes look so good. I'm really impressed with how these episodes have turned out. Keep in mind, this a 30-year old show, so there are limits to how crisp and clean the video can look. Compared to recent shows such as The Expanse, B5 retains a lot of original grain and has a softer overall picture quality, so adjust expectations accordingly. The audio is DTS-HD MA 5.1, and a DTS track is also included. This is overkill, but I'll take it, and it sounds excellent to my untrained ears.
Unfortunately, and I can't believe I have to report this. But leading into the first chapter break after the title sequence for each episode, there's a ~15 second break with the Babylon 5 logo and music like the show is heading into a commercial break. Very annoying. I've watched a huge number of DVDs and BluRays over the years, and I've never seen anything like this. I'm hoping I'll be able to edit those breaks out using various software processing tools. But this is bad, and I shouldn't have to go to such lengths.
And as others have said, there are no extras. (No, The Gathering doesn't count as an extra, no matter what the packaging might indicate.) No special features (not even those on the old DVDs), no commentary tracks, no JMS intro, etc. So again, keep your DVDs. But the actual episodes (so far) have looked absolutely amazing! This was a labor of love to rehabilitate a classic, and the results show. Thank you to everyone for their efforts!
So even with the above flaws and omissions, in my opinion this is the new reference for B5, at least for seasons 1-5. But keep your DVDs, they haven't been made obsolete. Can't say that enough! :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 (Minus DVD Extras!!!)
Verified Purchase((FULL DISCLOSURE: As of this review I haven only viewed the pilot feature The Gathering and the first half of season 1.))
I'm a huge B5 fan and I have, right or wrong, purchased practically every format the series has come out on (DVD, Streaming, Book) and now Blu-ray. I was thrilled to hear the series was getting a remastered Blu-ray release as I am in fact a pixel peeper and can notice the difference between high-resolution streaming and high-resolution disc playback.
The first thing you might notice when viewing this latest update is that the titles really pop out and look very sharp. They look so good that when watching the pilot feature The Gathering the context really makes the transfer of the show itself look pretty weak. The video borders on giving one the impression it was transferred from someone's VHS copy and only the titles were redone. Granted it still probably looks the best it ever has, it's still not saying much. From a packaging standpoint it feels odd they chose to put The Gathering on the very last disc of the set instead of it being the opening disc. This is certainly something you could change on your own by reshuffling all of the discs, but it was the first RED FLAG that made me concerned not as much TLC was given to this new set.
Once you get past the underwhelming opening feature and dig into the first official episodes of season one things turn around quite quickly. Image quality is MUCH better on the series episodes compared to The Gathering with moments where detail (skin, costume fabrics, etc.) almost leap off the screen. Don't get me wrong there are still the occasional moments where things look like a VHS dupe but those aren't the norm with the majority of things looking fairly good. Sadly every CGI shot is very rough around the edges, so keep that in mind. I've seen other shows like The Six Million Dollar Man, The A-Team, McGyver and other series brought to Blu-ray that predate Babylon 5's original production that look WAY better than these episodes look, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Dr. Who Blu-rays from the early (video/film, 70's-80's) days look comparable at times to this B5 scan. Much like the stories that have circulated about shows like Star Trek DS9 (very similar to B5's plot and characters) or Voyager where the "original prints" have somehow vanished this might be the best we ever get of B5.
The last and really BIGGEST criticism I have about this new Blu-ray release, and one that I wished I'd fully comprehended before purchasing this set, is the lack of the original commentaries and supplementary materials that were contained in the first DVD sets. I swear at some point I saw a release notice that included information about what would be contained on these discs and the audio commentaries were part of that listing. Now I can't find that posting anywhere. Had I known those wouldn't be carried over I wouldn't have sold my entire B5 DVD collection so that I could put that money towards the new Blu-ray set. I was eager to clear off the shelf space for this lean and mean Blu-ray and now truly regret that choice. The original DVD's weren't exactly brimming with supplementaries but what was there were truly wonderful, especially with the number of cast that have since passed away. The witty banter and fun that came across on those commentaries really added to the value of the discs. The fact they weren't carried over onto this new Blu-ray is a crime against all that's right and just.
From what I've watched so far I can say, The Gathering aside, things look really good and I'm glad to have this Blu-ray in my collection. My heart is broken about selling off my old DVD's and losing all those great commentaries. My bad. Maybe later if I really feel like it I'll slowly buy back those DVD's so I can access those commentaries again, but for now I can find some of them on YouTube and relive them there. If you have the DVD's hold onto them but do consider upgrading to the new Blu-ray. If you're a pixel peeper like me you'll enjoy the difference, but if that's not the level of scrutiny you're used to watching with then maybe streaming is good enough for you. Just remember that anything they give you on streaming can be taken away so owning a hardcopy gives you some security you'll never be denied B5.
