Received my Sony BDP-S1700 (Region Free) BluRay/DVD player the other day and got it up and running quickly and without any problems - I was replacing a defective player so I simply popped the HDMI that was already in place into the rear of the new unit - plugged it in - and fired up few discs to see how it worked: Happy to report that it was generally fine!
A couple of things to note:
1) The specs for the player (on 鶹) seemed to indicate that the player did NOT have a remote control included: This is incorrect! - the player DOES have a remote control (and batteries!) included in the package! 2) I would reiterate the comments from another reviewer that you must read the extra page of instructions that relate specifically to playing BluRay discs from foreign REGIONS! All regular DVD format discs, from ANY region, will play automatically - but - BluRay discs from other than Zone A regions must be set to play manually via a few simple moves on the remote keypad! There are colour coded keys that represent the 3 basic regions (A,B,&C) and the proper one for the disc to be viewed must be selected before inserting/playing!
I give credit to Sony for providing an actual printed instruction manual with its player. The info for the region free BluRay play is, however, on a separate sheet of paper and might be missed! Perhaps the reason that some reviewers were unhappy with the region free aspects was because they didnt see this important information?! Regardless - I was able to play regular DVDs and Region A and B BluRay discs successfully within 15 minutes of setting the unit up. This is a pretty bare-bones unit but it does the job and Im happy with it.
