Miike's best film for me, its got a wonderful slow burn to it, creepy atmosphere, perfect acting and wonderful directing.
I have been a huge horror fan for many years and this is my personal favorite, it just does so many things wonderfully.
If you want to get scared or you like Miikes other movies, check this out! Audition, Gozu and Rainy Dog are my person favorites of his.
This is a perfect example of how to do horror, you don't need tons of violence every second, Miike earns every second of the gory violence that happens late in this movie, as his pacing is just perfect throughout the whole movie, never jumping the gun.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 10, 2016Verified PurchaseA wonderful love story about how to let go of the past. But do not expect a gore fest here.
The violence is entirely justified and there is not much of it. What really convey this movie is it's acting.
One of the brilliant movie by Takashi Miike and probably one of his more accessible.

A real roller coaster ride that's for sure.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2004In the battle between men and women, who will triumph? Who knows, but Japanese director Takashi Miike's film "Audition" shines a particularly brutal light on this eternal conflict. Set in Japan, the film takes on additional significance considering what we know about the role of women in that society. I am far not expert on Japanese social roles or mores, but I imagine the stereotypical picture of a Japanese woman as a subservient figure to men is more or less an accurate one. Certainly, gender roles have changed somewhat over the last fifty plus years as Japan rapidly industrialized and assumed a western style political system. One hopes that some progress in this area has taken place there, but I am not so sure after watching this film. Apparently, the idea of a docile, ever ready to serve her partner woman still exerts a strong influence in that country. Otherwise, "Audition" would make little sense to its target audience. Completely independent of its effect on Japanese audiences, the movie will send shivers down the spine of every American male.
"Audition" starts like a Japanese adaptation of some saccharine American family television program. Aoyama, a man whose wife died some years before, desperately seeks female companionship. He works as a television producer, has done an excellent job raising his son, and enjoys bonding with this son on fishing trips. Aoyama, in other words, is a really nice guy. It's just that he is so lonely nowadays since his son is quickly growing up and has less and less time to spend with his father. Aoyama therefore soon faces the prospect of almost total solitude. Our hero opens his heart to his business partner one evening at the local bar, lamenting the changing face of Japanese society that has led to a decline of traditional women--meaning ladies who will stay home and serve their husbands--and a rise in the numbers of modern, cynical women. After commiserating with his buddy, the two come up with an excellent idea. Recognizing that they work in the film business, why not put out an ad for a female part in a new television program while secretly using the audition process as a means of securing the perfect mate for Aoyama? What a brilliant idea! A quick perusal of the resumes beforehand will help narrow down the final choices.
The plan goes off without a hitch, and Aoyama does indeed discover a young woman who he thinks will be his ideal match. Blessed with an ethereal visage and the pretty name of Asami, this young woman seems like a magnificent catch. Aoyama likes the fact that the young woman has undergone a few personal tragedies in her life but emerged stronger because of them. He even seems to like her perpetual shyness, perhaps because it indicates Asami is a traditional woman who will know her place in Aoyama's household. Even after deciding on Asami, our hero hesitates to pursue the relationship. Should he be so forward? Wouldn't it seem indecorous to make such blatant overtures? As Aoyama debates what action he should take a few problems emerge that cast a pall over his choice. His partner encourages him to choose someone else, saying that her "chemistry" isn't right and that he has a bad feeling about this young girl. Another possible problem emerges when Aoyama discovers that Asami has no permanent address. Only a phone number links the two potential lovers, but the lonely Aoyama throws all caution to the wind and calls anyway. On the other end of the line sits Asami, who spends a lot of time sitting around a bare room waiting by the telephone. When the phone finally rings, a smile full of sinister implications stretches itself across Asami's mug. She obviously knows her charms worked on the older Aoyama and now she plans on running a show full of painful activities.
No guy wants to think the sort of things that happen to Aoyama could really occur, but it can happen when you start treating people like objects instead of living, breathing beings. And Asami has been treated like an object by every male figure in her life. When it comes time to lash out at her oppressors, Aoyama is there to take the fall. The film becomes problematic when we learn that the main character is actually a nice guy. He loves his son, certainly wouldn't treat a woman badly, and is so lonely that it is tough to not empathize with the desperate measures he takes to find a woman. Miike lessens the likeability of Aoyama during the second half of the film, when we see he has some decidedly unsavory desires of his own, but I still couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy.
Whether the extreme torture session between Aoyama and Asami actually takes place or is a dream really isn't all that crucial to the story line although it certainly achieves a fingernails on the blackboard effect for any male watching it. I think "Audition" is a film about how men and women constantly and consistently fail to connect on a personal level. When Aoyama authorizes the audition and reads through the resumes looking for the perfect woman, he assigns a host of assumptions to Asami based on what HE wants in a woman. Whether she will fulfill these expectations in person is secondary to what the man wants. Watch the movie, not just for the gore scenes, but also to view a social critique about gender roles and miscommunication.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 29, 2003Everyone wants to feel wanted and everyone wants to have that special someone around to watch the world grow tiresome with. And how can they not, really? It is a social imperative, the need to feel and to have, and it is passed on by practically every society. So, conditioned within them, this need for people, for something they think they long for, it is something that all people, even those who have had and have lost, still seek.
Still, how does one go about kindling the fires of passion and finding something like this in the twilight of their lives?
How do you look but not waste time, find without truly having to seek, getting what you really want?
Well, one could go about it with the normal methodology, trying and trying again until they get dating right, hoping beyond hope that they find what they want. This takes time, mind you, and it is a method riddled with holes. Another method is taking a friend's suggestions on someone that they think fits you like a glove, trying their ideas out on how to meet and who to seek while seeing if they can play matchmaker better than the seeking can. This sometimes works well because the people around you see more of you than you oftentimes do, but this sometimes fails as well. Or, if one has the means and the will, they can combine these suggestions, taking the advice of a friend, the method of dating, and the construction of a little lie - that of an audition - to launch a probe into backgrounds of interest.
So, what can be said about a movie that manages to worm its way into the psyche, making you question the motives of the people around you? Well, in The Audition's case, many things. The way the walls of this construct were built, with the characters introduced and their motives fashioned, were done with merit. First there is almost a mundaneness that most people seem to birth, that of the longing that comes from a world running in low gear and that of families and friends sharing opinions. This slowly drifts into else, taking on happiness and then, through the wiggling of a severed tongue and the creative use of piano wire, drowning in darkness. Within this is housed a few interesting lives and angles by which those worlds are seen, and there is a longing that portrayed here, making a person see more of the carnality of the tragedy being portrayed.
Although undeniably horrific, it is enticing and addictive and, in many a right, it is a bizarre ride as well.
Within this movie, there are many elements that had their desired effect, honestly make me feel uncomfortable with the process of dating and with interaction on the whole. This is because the elements of the film all revolve around learning about people; believing in the image perpetuated in the hopes that something could become tangible and that happiness will manifest, and the fact that you can be with someone and not truly know them. Although you lie in the same bed and you hear the words that they say over a meal, you oftentimes find little voids, ugly little limitations, in those dealings. But the limitations, the snapshots that we overlook and hope doesn't exist within our beauty, that of the evolution of the social monster, they are never dwelt on when we are off chasing dreams.
But what if they should be dwelt on, if they really have weight in the mind that we are dealing with, and what if that person is an addiction that we cannot support because, in a sense, they are a vice sporting teeth?
Could the person you love possibly be some grotesquery inside?
For those that have just found their true love and don't mind some bone-rending depictions of what pain is, this is a movie I would definitely recommend. I say this because it is a gray cloud in a blue sky, one that would deflate any balloon thinking about flying friendly skies, and that might possibly help nightmares coat those smiling shades. Through what amounts to a little seed of doubt, this display of entrancing angles and foreign seaming (and subtitles) make you wonder if the words you are hearing, the ones that make you think all things are possible, are actually truths being birthed.
It is this ability to impact, this precision seeding valleys of doubt, that make it delectable.

1.0 out of 5 stars A hugely overrated film.
Verified PurchaseDont have much positive to say about this film
and you can also clearly see they killed a dog just to film a scene(towards the end) making this.
I bought it but felt I did not want such garbage in my filmcollection so I got rid of it again.
Not gonna watch any more movies by Miike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Film, der es wert ist...
Verified Purchase...analysiert zu werden. VORSICHT SPOILER!

FONCEZ. Mais attention ?mes sensibles. Vraiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must watch as a horror fan
Verified PurchaseThe movie may be a bit slow but be patient it builds up a very good story then for a lot of people it will become disturbing and hard to watch. If you handle watching someone get badly tortured then you're good. It's a very good movie and I definitely recommend it to all you horror fans. It's a foreign film so you'll have to be patient reading subtitles. Don't ever watch a foreign film dubbed imo it ruins a good foreign film. But this movie is a must see
