A brand-new novel from the #1 bestselling author of VIRGIN RIVER
Four women come together at a tumultuous time in their lives, forging an unbreakable bond that will leave them all forever changed.
Celebrity cooking show host Marni McGuire has seen it all. She’s been married—twice—and widowed and divorced. Now in her mid-fifties, she’s single. Happily so. She just needs to convince her pregnant daughter, Bella, of this fact. And maybe convince herself, too. Especially after Marni’s efforts to humor her determined daughter result in a series of disastrous dates that somehow prompt Marni to wonder if maybe the right man for her is still out there after all.
Similarly single, Marni’s best friend and colleague is confident she’s content without a man, but both older women soon find themselves leading by example as the young intern on their show appears caught in a toxic relationship—and Bella reveals her own marriage maybe isn’t built to withstand the stresses of the baby on the way.
Suddenly, all four women find themselves at a crossroads, each navigating the challenges of dating, marriage, loneliness and love. Thankfully, they have each other to lean on. The realities of modern love are far from easy, but there’s no better group to have in your corner than friends who will lift you up, no matter what, and hold fast in the face of any storm.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 23, 2024“The Friendship Club” by Robyn Carr weaves a compelling narrative of four women navigating the complexities of life and love. The author masterfully brings together characters from different generations, each facing relatable challenges such as toxic relationships, failed marriages, loss of spouse and the trials of pregnancy.
Personally, I resonated with the engaging backstories of these women, finding their journeys relatable. Carr delicately handles sensitive topics with respect, addressing issues like loss, loneliness, and the realities of modern love. This being my first Robyn Carr book, I was captivated by the well-crafted characters and seamless flow of the narrative.
Marni’s character stood out, her independence and resilience drawing me in. As someone who understands the strength gained from overcoming challenges, I appreciated the depth of her development. The book’s underlying message of supporting women in need struck a chord, and I admired how each friend found their unique ways to contribute.
The mature romances, built on friendship, added a delightful layer to the story. Carr’s portrayal of relationships is both realistic and heartwarming. In essence, “The Friendship Club” is a captivating exploration of friendship, love, and the strength found in supporting one another. I’ll undoubtedly be recommending this book to fellow readers, and I look forward to exploring more of Robyn Carr’s work in the future.
Thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing for the DRC of this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 23, 2024I really love Robyn Carr's books, her series and her standalone novels. "The Friendship Club", as described in the listing, is about four co-workers each at a turning point in their lives. Ms Carr doesn't shy away from some of the darker issues in our lives, the stalkers, gaslighters and abusers. Some of the characters are mature and ready for a new challenge, should I even suggest love? Others are young and more vulnerable. Definitely a book to read beside a fire during the next blizzard or in a recliner by the beach or pool, anywhere you can just settle down and enjoy your reading.
Thank you to the publisher who lent me an e-arc via Netgalley. This review is optional and my own opinion.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 23, 2024The Friendship Club is a standalone book by author Robyn Carr (Best known for the Virgin River series). This is a women’s fiction with a touch of romance.
Marni McGuire is a celebrity chef, once widowed and once divorced living happily on her own with her circle of friends surrounding her. Marni’s circle consists of her sister Nettie, her friend Ellen (and producer of her show), her daughter Bella and Sophie her the young intern at her show.
Each of these women are at the peak of change in their lives and depend on each other for advice, guidance and friendship. When one of their own is caught up in an abusive relationship they come together to help guide and protect her.
While keeping busy filming her show and maintaining her friendships Marni is certain love and relationships aren’t in her future. A connection with an unexpected suitor makes her realize that maybe it’s not too late.
This is a good story with strong female characters and incredible friendships. There is a sprinkle of romance for a few of the characters as well. I did find some parts a bit repetitive, multiple explanations of the same past memories said different ways. This is a 3 star for me, decent but not a ton of character depth. This is a quick easy light read!

4.0 out of 5 stars A different type of book
Verified PurchaseI have read all of Robyn Carr’s books and have loved them all. This one is very different. She obviously wanted to give voice to abused women which she did very well. I loved the friendship of the women. Some of the book at the beginning moved very slowly, but overall I enjoyed the book. It just was not what I was expecting.
