Tales from the Loop
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
Now an 鶹 Prime Original Series!
Perfect for fans of E.T. and Stranger Things—the first narrative artbook from acclaimed author and artist Simon Stålenhag about a fictionalized suburban town in the 1980s inhabited by fantastic machines and strange, imaginative beasts.
In 1954, the Swedish government ordered the construction of the world’s largest particle accelerator. The facility was complete in 1969, located deep below the pastoral countryside of Mälaröarna. The local population called this marvel of technology The Loop. These are its strange tales.
From the same author who wrote the imaginative artbook The Electric State, this “haunting,” (The Verge) “sophisticated sci-fi” (The Nerdist) follows the bizarre stories from otherworldly creatures and is a captivating listen you won’t be able to put down.

- Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2016Verified PurchasePerhaps a contradiction to describe it thus, the phrase "science fiction realism/naturalism" best defines this incredible collection of Euro-suburbia through the filter of a science fiction-themed alternate 1980s Sweden. The book is an incredible collection of amazing artwork - all accompanided by cleverly written fiction from the artist himself - that has captured my imagination in a way few things do these days. The large landscape format of the book is well suited to the detailed paintings inside and the print quality is superb. Stalenhag's work combines elements of retro science fiction, with equal measures of modern and old school mechanical design, all set in the gorgeous landscapes of the Swedish cities and country side. I recommend this book to sci-fi fans, fans of art and fans that love robots.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 2, 2020Verified PurchaseI saw the show on 鶹 Prime and I absolutely loved it so bought the book and was not disappointed. Just as every shot in the show was frameable art, the book it is based on has sublime imagery and a real sense of awe. Reading some backstory to some of the equipment (missing from the show) was a great companion piece! If you like bold sci-fi art and unusual world-building, you will love this
- Reviewed in Canada on August 14, 2024Verified PurchaseI love this author’s work, I am reading this just after finishing “The Labyrinth”. I do find the series to lack some of the mysteries, making too much obvious.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2025Verified PurchaseAs advertised and on time.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 12, 2022Verified PurchaseThis is not only a book to read. It’s a book to collect, to put in your living room. To hold a centre location in your bookshelf. I’m very much disappointed with the state the book arrived and will ask for replacement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book. But the "sticker" is actually printed on
Verified PurchaseGreat book with amazing illustrations. Printing quality appears to be good.
But unfortunately the 鶹 ad on it is not a sticker, but is printed on it. Just a warning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating peek into a parallel universe
Verified PurchaseStumbled across this through a 'people who bought items in your cart also bought this' list - had never heard of the artist/author previously. So glad to have discovered it now, though.
Not knowing a great deal about Scandinavia, the story sounded plausible at the very beginning, until I realised that it was way too early for the kind of science that's being suggested. So this is a parallel universe, then, and a fascinating one. What kid doesn't love playing around hulks of dead machinery? (Well, they did in my day - I'm not sure they'd be allowed near them today.)
The artwork is fascinating, with sketches scattered here and there for an insight into the artist's process. Coupled with the fragments of story, it ends up being a comfortable mix of art book and illustrated story that just seems to work, even though it perhaps shouldn't.
Will definitely by more works by the same author. Great find and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book's great, the shipping could be better
Verified PurchaseWhen I was reading the book it was quite soon apparent to me why it inspired so many. It has a really strong aesthetic which goes much deeper than "robots and mystery in 80-s Sweden". The way the stories are told, the charm of childhood stories plays a big role here. The narratives and illustrations are "human", very easy to sympathize with. Even though there's little overarching plot, every story pulls you in the universe and you get to experience different aspects of people's lives in a short amount of time. Oh, and the book is quite short, which is a shame. Both the 鶹 series and Things from the Flood, at least for me, don't scratch the same itch as this book.
