NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A “visionary” (The Guardian) exploration of freedom—what it is, how it’s been misunderstood, and why it’s our only chance for survival—by the acclaimed Yale historian and author of On Tyranny
“[Snyder’s] deep political and philosophical examination of how to . . . create and sustain freedom provides a hopeful view for the future.”—Los Angeles Times
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.
Freedom is the great American commitment, but as Snyder argues, we have lost sight of what it means—and this is leading us into crisis. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power: We think we're free if we can do and say as we please, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible.
On Freedom takes us on a thrilling intellectual journey. Drawing on the work of philosophers and political dissidents, conversations with contemporary thinkers, and his own experiences coming of age in a time of American exceptionalism, Snyder identifies the practices and attitudes—the habits of mind—that will allow us to design a government in which we and future generations can flourish. We come to appreciate the importance of traditions (championed by the right) but also the role of institutions (the purview of the left). Intimate yet ambitious, this book helps forge a new consensus rooted in a politics of abundance, generosity, and grace.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 7, 2025Verified PurchaseAt times Snyder waxes philosophical in a manner that causes me to reread a passage several times and reflect. Freedom has meaning dependent on a person's context, and also on a person's aspiration. It is not a guide on how to be free, but it guides me on thinking of of what do I wish to be free without the negative freedom of running away.
On Tyranny warns of the things to be on guard watch. On Freedom is not a warning; it considers the spirit that glows fed on the sense of being and sharing in freedom.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 21, 2025Verified PurchaseWhile "On Freedom" focuses more on America's relationship with freedom and what freedom actually is, it is still a very interesting read for Canadians. Snyder contrasts the two countries numerous times in a very relevant way with today's current events.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 15, 2024Timothy Snyder’s On Freedom is a compelling read that presents enlightening arguments exploring freedom from multiple angles, including political, historical, and moral perspectives. Snyder challenges traditional views and offers deep insights, making this a valuable read for anyone interested in the complexities of freedom.
However, one aspect that didn’t resonate with me was the frequent use of biblical references to support his philosophical moral concepts. My own negative experiences with religious fallacies have made it difficult for me to engage with such arguments. Unfortunately, these references appeared often enough that I found myself skipping sections. If you appreciate religious connections in philosophical discussions, this may enhance your experience; for me, however, it detracted from an otherwise thought-provoking book.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 13, 2024I was looking forward to this book, expecting a philosopher's/historian's perspective on the title topic but I found a book of perhaps 5% of interesting insights and 95% of lengthy personal stories distantly related to the supposed subject, slogans, fluff, repetitionm, and artificial supporting conceptual structure. I must admit that I stopped reading in the middle of the last chapter because I lost hope that anything substantial was coming so perhaps something more worth reading arrives in the last few pages. In summary, I must have read a different edition than the other reviewers. :-(

5.0 out of 5 stars The book for the moment
Verified PurchaseMuch as his earlier book on tyranny, this new one appears at a critical moment for America and the rest of the world. Timothy Snyder undertakes an in-depth research into what it means to be free and what it takes to remain free by defending this freedom..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Alpha and Omega of Positive Freedom
Verified PurchaseI must say that I savored every thought and word of this book. But, for me, the most revealing standout sections were the preface and the acknowledgments at the beginning and end. The preface jumps right into the deep end with an analysis of the five aspects of positive freedom: sovereignty, unpredictability, mobility, facticity, and solidarity. These core values inform the primacy of freedom as the value of values, which also mirror the stages of human individual growth. The body of the work is then organized along these principles, contrasting these positive attributes with negative freedom, the absence of restrains. Human nature, like nature, in general, abhors a vacuum. Getting rid of restraint does not “automatically” render a good life. Tyranny, banality, and cyber algorithms rush into the vacuum to confuse people’s thinking. The goal of a good society is to promote values that foster positive freedom, a sense of purpose in living, that comes from within. The acknowledgements at the end, fill in the details of how a philosophical treatise was transformed into a powerful tale of moral vignettes that illustrate these principles in unforgettable ways. These stories vividly portray heroic lives of people who find the courage to shrug off tyranny and thought control (even in prisons in America). So many great and caring minds lent their time and effort into polishing this work into its final form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tim Snyder's Most Personal Book Yet
Verified PurchaseI have come to know Timothy Snyder through his work as a historian - a role in which he has learnt other languages to access history from other perspectives in order to seek a deeper understanding of the forces that shape our world today.
He is an unassailable historian in my view and a public asset.
This book is different. He uses a bit of history and some philosophy to reflect on Freedom quite deeply and builds his reflection around a word that I think is one of the most important new words we must get used to using.
And that key word is 'Unfreedom'.
Because that is essentially where we are and that is what we are experiencing.
Stylistically, the book reads as a stream of consciousness punctuated by facts, that is reduced down to some critical conclusions. Ours is a world dominated by what is actually a vision of freedom that is an exclusively reserved for the rich and powerful but is sold to the masses as populist project.
Snyder challenges everything, including the Left who supposedly some of us look to for a remedy. His unpicking of the Left's weaknesses are deft and laser-like and need to be heeded - especially how the Left has allowed the Right to monopolize the concept of freedom. But Snyder also sets out how conservative and progressive outlooks can work together that is so obvious you wonder why it has not been picked up before?
But what prevents any epiphany? Well, political funding for a start and Snyder expertly unpicks and debunks the latest faulty (but deliberate) thinking that leads to unfreedom - not freedom.
'Unfreedom' - get used to that word, because it exists in word and in reality. And it must be opposed. We must do better to recognise it.
One day you know, in the future, people or beings seeking to understand what happened to us in these times whilst trying to understand the wreckage could do a lot worse than read any of Tim Snyder's writings. What happened is all there in painstaking detail, put together by one of the most capable witnesses to our age.
Highly recommended.
